Claims
- 1. A lock for preventing theft or unauthorized use of a tool comprising:
a lock housing; a lock cylinder assembly disposed within said lock housing; two or more locking balls disposed within the lock housing; and an opening in said lock housing, wherein a portion of a tool can be inserted; wherein said locking balls are retained with respect to the portion of the tool inserted within said opening in said lock housing when the lock cylinder is in a locked position.
- 2. The lock of claim 1 further comprising an inner housing with cutaway portions for positioning said locking balls.
- 3. The lock of claim 1 further comprising ball springs that engage the locking balls and bias the locking balls towards the center of the lock housing.
- 4. The lock of claim 3, wherein said ball springs further comprise centering clips that engage the pneumatic fitting.
- 5. The lock of claim 1, wherein said lock cylinder assembly is a wafer tumbler cylinder assembly incorporating pick-resistance features.
- 6. The lock of claim 1, wherein the lock housing further comprises locking ball retention projections, wherein said projections engage the locking balls when in a locked position.
- 7. The lock of claim 2, wherein the inner housing is rotated by the lock cylinder assembly to move the lock to and from a locked position.
- 8. The lock of claim 1, further comprising a cylinder extension that rotates the lock to and from a locked position.
- 9. The lock of claim 1, wherein the lock housing further comprises a shackle for securing the lock to another object.
- 10. The lock of claim 9, wherein said shackle is integral with said lock housing.
- 11. The lock of claim 9 further comprising an integral cable for securing the lock to another object.
- 12. The lock of claim 1 further comprising a shield that is affixes to the pneumatic tool fitting receiving end of the lock, wherein said shield abuts the tool and prevents access to the portion of the tool secured by said lock.
- 13. The lock of claim 1, wherein the cylinder assembly is interchangeable.
- 14. The lock of claim 13, wherein the cylinder assembly includes a trap door mechanism for removing said lock cylinder from the lock housing.
- 15. A lock comprising:
a lock housing including a locking cavity therein; a rotatable lock cylinder disposed within said lock housing; two or more locking balls disposed within the locking cavity of said lock housing; and a means for selectively retaining said locking balls in interlocking engagement with a tool.
- 16. The lock of claim 15, wherein said means for selectively retaining said locking balls includes:
a inner surface that houses said locking balls within a set of openings; ball springs that engage said locking balls and bias the locking balls toward the center of the locking cavity; and locking ball retention surfaces that engage said locking balls when said lock is in the locked position and prevent said locking balls from withdrawing from engagement with said tool and into said openings in said inner surface.
- 17. The lock of claim 15, wherein said lock cylinder is interchangeable.
- 18. The lock of claim 15, wherein said lock housing includes a shackle for securing the lock to another object.
- 19. The lock of claim 18, wherein the shackle further includes a cable secured at one end within said lock housing and having a second end for securing the lock to another object.
- 20. The lock of claim 17, wherein said lock cylinder includes a trap door mechanism for removing said lock cylinder from the lock housing.
- 21. A method of securing a pneumatic tool having a pneumatic fitting comprising the steps of:
inserting the pneumatic fitting of said pneumatic tool into a cavity within a lock body; retaining the fitting within the lock body cavity by a set of spring-loaded locking balls that engage a retaining groove on said pneumatic fitting; and locking said locking balls into engagement with said pneumatic fitting.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the step of locking said locking balls into engagement with said pneumatic fitting further comprises the steps of:
rotating a lock cylinder which thereby rotates a surface which retain said locking balls; aligning said locking balls with a set of raised surfaces, wherein said surfaces engage said locking balls and prevent movement from the retaining groove within said pneumatic fitting.
- 23. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of securing the lock housing to another object by fastening a cable or padlock through a shackle integral with said lock housing and through the other object.
- 24. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of aligning said pneumatic fitting within said lock body cavity with a set of alignment clips.
