Claims
- 1. In a pneumatic power tool including a tool body having a pneumatic motor mounted therein, said motor having at least one air inlet and one air outlet port therein, drive means in the body driven by the motor, the improvement of a sound attenuating exhaust air flow arrangement for said motor comprising at least one exhaust air discharge port in said body, said body including a single annular wall, and means defining a tortuous path totally within the single annular wall through said tool body between said air outlet port of said motor and said exhaust air discharge port, said tortuous path being defined only by the tool body and the drive means, said tortuous path being effective to reduce the sound level of the exhaust air flowing therethrough to a level such that no supplemental muffling is required.
- 2. In a pneumatic power tool including a tool body having a pneumatic motor mounted therein, said motor having at least one air inlet and one air outlet port therein, the improvement of a sound attenuating exhaust air flow arrangement for said motor comprising at least one exhaust air discharge port in said body, and means defining a tortuous path through said tool body between said air outlet port of said motor and said exhaust air discharge port, said tortuous path being effective to reduce the sound level of the exhaust air flowing therethrough to a level such that no supplemental muffling is required, said tool body being elongated, said motor being mounted at one end of said body, said exhaust air discharge port being located at the opposite end of said body, said exhaust air path extending generally longitudinally through said tool body.
- 3. The exhaust air flow arrangement of claim 2, further characterized in that a gear case member is provided at said opposite end of said body, and said exhaust air discharge port comprises a plurality of bores in said gear case member.
- 4. The exhaust air flow arrangement of claim 3, further characterized in that said bores are arranged in a ring and extend angularly outwardly through said member.
- 5. In a pneumatic power tool including a tool body having a pneumatic motor mounted therein, said motor having at least one air inlet and one air outlet port therein, the improvement of a sound attenuating exhaust air flow arrangement for said motor comprising at least one exhaust air discharge port in said body, means defining a tortuous path through said tool body between said air outlet port of said motor and said exahust air discharge port, said tortuous path being effective to reduce the sound level of the exhaust air flowing therethrough to a level such that no supplemental muffling is required, said tool body having a torque output spindle, said motor having an output shaft, reduction gearing being provided between said torque output spindle and said motor shaft, and said exhaust air path extending through said reduction gearing.
- 6. The exhaust air flow arrangement of claim 5, further characterized in that said reduction gearing comprises at least one planetary gear train, and said exhaust air path includes clearances between the gears of said train.
- 7. The exhaust air flow arrangement of claim 5, further characterized in that said tool body includes a housing surrounding said motor, an annular bearing support member mounted in said housing for supporting a bearing assembly for said motor shaft, and said exhaust air flow path includes an annular clearance space between said bearing support member and said housing.
- 8. The exhaust air flow arrangement of claim 7, further characterized in that an annular reduction gear case member is mounted in said housing for supporting said reduction gearing, the outer periphery of said reduction gear case member engages the inner surface of said housing, and said exhaust air flow path includes at least one axially extending groove in said outer periphery of said reduction gear case member.
- 9. The exhaust air flow arrangement of claim 8, further characterized in that a plurality of said axially extending grooves are provided in the outer periphery of said reduction gear case member, said grooves comprising a portion of said exhaust air flow path.
- 10. A pneumatic rotary power tool, comprising; an elongated tool housing having a rotary air driven motor mounted in one end thereof, planetary reduction gearing mounted in the housing including a planetary gear carrier having a plurality of planet pinions, an output shaft rotatably mounted in the other end of the housing and connected to be driven in rotation by the reduction gearing, and means for attenuating the noise level of exhaust air from the air motor including exhaust port means in the housing at the output shaft end thereof, and a tortuous exhaust flow path between the air motor and the exhaust port means completely within the housing defined at least in part by the planetary reduction gearing.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This application is a division of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 359,640, filed May 14, 1973, now Pat. No. 3,920,082, and relates to power tools, and more particularly relates to a power tool having a torque sensing control system for precisely controlling the torque output of the tool.
