Claims
- 1. A polarizing device comprising:
an optically transparent isotropic waveguiding layer having a refractive index ni; an optically transparent separating layer comprising an anisotropic region having principal refractive indices nx and ny; wherein nx is greater than ny; and wherein said refractive index ni is substantially smaller than nx and substantially larger than ny.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein said anisotropic region is a form birefringent region.
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein said separating layer consists of said anisotropic region.
- 4. The device of claim 1, wherein said separating layer has an out-coupling means.
- 5. The device of claim 1, wherein said separating layer has an out-coupling means comprising a relief structure.
- 6. The device of claim 5, wherein said relief structure collimates light.
- 7. An illumination system comprising the device of claim 1.
- 8. A flat panel picture display comprising the illumination system of claim 7.
- 9. The polarization device of claim 1, wherein nx is the extraordinary index of the anisotropic region, and wherein ny is the ordinary refractive index of the anisotropic region.
- 10. A polarization device comprising:
an optically transparent waveguiding layer; and an optically transparent separating layer; wherein said separating layer comprises a form birefringent region having principal refractive indices nx and ny.
- 11. The device of claim 10, wherein said waveguiding layer is an isotropic layer having a refractive index ni.
- 12. The device of claim 10, wherein said separating layer further comprises an isotropic region having a refractive index ns.
- 13. The device of claim 12, wherein ns>nx≧ni>ny.
- 14. The device of claim 10, wherein said form birefringent region is a layer with a sub-micron grating.
- 15. The device of claim 14, wherein said grating is rectangularly shaped.
- 16. The device of claim 10, wherein said separating layer comprises an out-coupling means.
- 17. The device of claim 16, wherein said separating layer comprises an out-coupling means comprising a relief structure.
- 18. The device of claim 17, wherein said relief structure collimates light.
- 19. The device of claim 10, wherein said waveguiding layer comprises poly(methyl methacrylate).
- 20. The device of claim 10, wherein said exit layer comprises polystyrene.
- 21. An illumination system comprising the device of claim 10.
- 22. A flat panel picture display comprising the illumination system of claim 21.
- 23. A method for making the device according to any one of claims 10-20, comprising:
forming said birefringent region by injection molding.
- 24. A polarizing device comprising an optical waveguide comprising:
a separating layer comprising a first optically transparent anisotropic region having principal refractive indices nx and ny, wherein nx is greater than ny; a waveguiding layer comprising a second optically transparent anisotropic region having principal refractive indices na and nb, wherein na is greater than nb; and wherein at least one of na and nb is substantially different from nx and from ny.
- 25. The device of claim 24, wherein said principal refractive indices nx and ny are refractive indices in a plane parallel to the interface between said separating layer and waveguiding layer.
- 26. The device of claim 25, wherein said principal refractive indices na and nb are refractive indices in a plane parallel to the interface between said separating layer and waveguiding layer.
- 27. The device of claim 26, wherein na is larger than nx and larger than ny, and wherein nb is smaller than nx and smaller than ny.
- 28. The device of claim 26, wherein said refractive index na has the same direction as said principal refractive index nx.
- 29. The device of claim 28, wherein na is greater than nx and wherein nb is smaller than ny.
- 30. The device of claim 28, wherein na is smaller than nx and nb is greater than ny.
- 31. The device of claim 26, wherein said principal refractive index na has the same direction as said principal refractive index ny.
- 32. The device of claim 31, wherein said refractive index na is greater than said refractive index ny, and wherein said refractive index nb is smaller than said refractive index nx.
- 33. The device of claim 31, wherein said refractive index na is smaller than said refractive index ny, and wherein said refractive index nb is greater than said refractive index nx.
- 34. The device of claim 24, wherein said waveguiding layer consists of said second anisotropic region.
- 35. The device of claim 24, wherein said separating layer comprises a form birefringent region.
- 36. An illumination system comprising the device of claim 24.
- 37. A flat panel picture display comprising the illumination system of claim 36.
- 38. A polarizing device comprising:
an optically transparent isotropic waveguiding first layer having a refractive index ni; an optically transparent anisotropic separating layer having principal refractive indices nx and ny, wherein nx is greater than ny; an optically transparent third layer having a refractive index nt; wherein said separating layer comprise an light out-coupling means; and wherein said third layer is provided on top of said light out-coupling means.
- 39. The device of claim 38, wherein said refractive index nt is substantially equal to said refractive index ny.
- 40. The device of claim 38, wherein the surface of said third layer that is facing away from said light out-coupling means is a flat surface.
- 41. The device of claim 38, wherein said third layer is an acrylic layer.
- 42. An illumination system comprising the device of claim 38.
- 43. A flat panel picture display comprising the illumination system of claim 42.
