Claims
- 1. A polishing system, for polishing dental composite material comprising:
- a finishing element,
- a polishing element and
- an elastomeric body,
- said finishing element being connected to said elastomeric body,
- said polishing element being connected to said finishing element,
- said polishing element comprising fibers having abrasive powder impregnated therein,
- said elastomeric body comprising an elastomer, said elastomeric body having a central axis and a central bore proximal to said central axis, said central bore being adapted to receive a mandrel,
- said fibers having a nap adapted to support a paste for polishing said dental composite material.
- 2. A polishing system of claim 1 in which said abrasive powder has a hardness of between about 5.5 and 10 on the Moh's scale of hardness.
- 3. The system of claim 1 wherein said finishing element is formed from an elastomer composition comprising an alkyl urethane prepolymer having a molecular weight of between about 1500 and 2500 and having a viscosity of between about 10,000-35,000 cps at 25.degree. C. and an abrasive powder having a hardness of between from about 5.5 to about 10 on the Moh's scale of hardness, and said polishing element having 1 micron abrasive powder impregnated in interstices of said fibers.
- 4. The system of claim 1 further comprising an abrasive implement for gross reduction or shaping of composites which simultaneously reduces filler and resin in the composite, said abrasive implement is connected to said polishing element, said abrasive implement comprising an elastomer composition having an abrasive powder having a hardness greater than said filler, and wherein said polishing element is formed from a natural or synthetic fiber material having a nap capable of holding and carrying a one-micron abrasive lapping paste while in rotation and polishing a composite.
- 5. The system of claim 3 wherein said abrasive powder comprises from about 40% to about 90% by weight of said elastomer composition.
- 6. The system of claim 3 wherein said prepolymer comprises the reaction product of polyalkylene glycol, alkylene diisocyanate and hydroxyalkyl substituted ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid.
- 7. The system of claim 3 wherein said elastomer composition comprises from about 19 to about 35% by weight of said prepolymer, from about 1 to about 5% by weight pyrogenic silica and from about 60% to about 80% by weight abrasive powder.
- 8. The system of claim 3 wherein said polishing element is cylindrical, and said finishing implement is disk shaped and attached to one end of said polishing element.
- 9. A polishing system for polishing dental composite material, comprising:
- a polishing element and
- an elastomeric body,
- said polishing element being connected to said elastomeric body,
- said polishing element comprising foam plastic having abrasive powder and desensitizing agent impregnated therein, said abrasive powder being adapted for polishing said dental composite material,
- said elastomeric body comprising an elastomer, said elastomeric body having a central axis,
- said foam being adapted to support a paste for polishing said dental composite material.
