Claims
- 1. A compound of the general formula (A): ##STR8## wherein: Q is a hydrogen atom or a group --CH.sub.2 Z;
- Z is a 2-hydroxyphenyl group R.sub.1 is a hydrocarbyl group R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.7 to R.sub.11 are each, independently, a hydrogen atom;
- Y.sub.1 is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl group containing up to 20 carbon atoms, or a phenyl group;
- Y.sub.2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing up to 20 carbon atoms, or Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2, together with the group ##STR9## form a saturated or unsaturated ring system; and R.sub.1, Y .sub.1 and Y.sub.2 are the same or different and together contain in total from 10 to 60 saturated carbon atoms.
- 2. A compound of the general formula (A): ##STR10## wherein: Q is a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbyl group or a group --CH.sub.2 Z;
- Z is a --COOH group or a 2-hydroxyphenyl group which may optionally be substituted by the groups R.sub.12, R.sub.13 and R.sub.14 ;
- R.sub.1 to R.sub.9, and R.sub.12 to R.sub.14, which may be the same or different, are substituent groups selected from hydrogen, hydrocarbyl, alkoxy, halogen, hydrocarbyl sulphonyl, acyl, amino, nitro and cyano or, when R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 and/or R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are adjacent substituents they may complete a benzo ring and R.sub.1 to R.sub.9 and R.sub.12 to R.sub.14 are such that the substituents on at least one of the rings are different form the substitutents on at least one other of the rings;
- R.sub.10 and R.sub.11 are each, independently, a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing up to 20 carbon atoms;
- Y.sub.1 is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl group containing up to 20 carbon atoms, or a phenyl group;
- Y.sub.2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing up to 20 carbon atoms, or Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2, together with the group ##STR11## form a saturated or unsaturated ring system; and R.sub.1 to R.sub.14, Y.sub.1 to Y.sub.2 are the same or different and together contain in total from 10 to 60 saturated carbon atoms.
- 3. The compound of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein R.sub.1 is selected from methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, t-butyl, isopentyl, hexyl, heptyl octyl, nonyl, dodecyl, 2-hexyldecyl, isooctadecyl and 2-octyldodecyl groups.
- 4. The compound of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein R.sub.1 selected from methyl and the highly branched higher tertiary alkyl groups which are obtained from propylene trimer and/or propylene tetramer.
- 5. The compound of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein Y.sub.1 is hydrogen, a methyl group or a phenyl group and Y.sub.2 is hydrogen.
- 6. The compound of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbyl group present in R.sub.1 contains 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 7. The compound of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein Y.sub.1 is a methyl or a phenyl group.
- 8. The compound of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein R.sub.1 is an alkyl group and Q is CH.sub.2 Z.
- 9. The compound of claim 1 which is N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-5-tertiarynonylbenzyl)-1,2-diaminoethane or N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'bis(2-hydroxy-5-tertiarynonylbenzyl)-1,2-diaminopropane.
