Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a polyarylimidazolidine oligomer with about one to about twenty arylimidazolidine repeat units and having phenolic hydroxyl end groups, said process comprising:
- a. mixing an excess of hydrogen cyanide with an aryl diisocyanate and a catalyst in an anhydrous solvent to afford an exothermic reaction;
- b. adding a stoichiometric amount of said aryl diisocyanate to react with said excess hydrogen cyanide and one hydroxyl of a phenolic dihydroxyl end capping group after the exothermic reaction has cooled slightly; and
- c. adding immediately thereafter said dihydroxyl end capping group.
- 2. The process for preparing the polyarylimidazolidine oligomer of claim 1 further comprising the step of treating the product from step c with a mineral acid to convert an imino group to a carbonyl group.
- 3. A polyarylimidazolidine oligomer consisting of of about one to about twenty arylimidazolidine repeat units and phenolic hydroxyl end groups.
- 4. The polyarylimidazolidine oligomer of claim 3 having a degree of polymerization of about three to about ten.
- 5. The polyarylimidazolidine oligomer of claim 4 having a degree of polymerization of about four.
