Claims
- 1. A fiber comprising a biodegradable block copolymer consisting essentially of at least one crystalline or semi-crystalline rigid "A" block, and at least one flexible, amorphous "B" block,
- said "A" block formed from at least one type of recurring monomeric unit of the following General Structure I or II: ##STR15## wherein Z is ##STR16## or a combination thereof where Z is selected such that there are no adjacent heteroatoms;
- n and m are the same or different at each occurrence and are integers from 1 to 8;
- R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are the same or different at each occurrence and are hydrogen, alkoxyaryl, aryloxyaryl, arylalkyl, alkylarylalkyl, arylalkylaryl, alkylaryl, arylcarbonylalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, alkyl, aryl, alkylcarbonylalkyl, cycloalkyl, arylcarbonylaryl, alkylcarbonylaryl, alkoxyalkyl, or aryl or alkyl substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, dialkylamino, diarylamino or alkylarylamino;
- R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are the same or different and are R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, dialkylamino, diarylamino, alkylarylamino, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkanoyl, or arylcarbonyl; or any two of R.sub.1 to R.sub.8 substituents together may form an alkylene chain completing a 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 membered alicyclic, fused, spiro, bicyclic and/or tricyclic ring system, which system may optionally include one or more non-adjacent carbonyl, oxa, alkylaza or arylaza groups; and
- said "B" block is different from said A-block and consists of at least one type of recurring unit derived from monomers selected from the group consisting of lactones, hydroxycarboxylic acids, lactides, epoxides, cyclic ethers, dioxanones other than carbonates, polyols, orthoesters, carbonates, and epoxides/CO.sub.2.
- 2. An implantable medical device fabricated totally or in part from the fiber of claim 1.
- 3. An implantable medical device which is tubularly woven totally or in part from the fiber of claim 1.
- 4. A medical device according to claim 3 wherein said device is selected from the group consisting of nerve channels and vascular grafts.
- 5. The fiber of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, aryloxyaryl, arylalkyl, and aryl and arylalkyl groups substituted with one or more alkyl, alkoxy and alkoxyalkyl groups.
- 6. The fiber of claim 5 wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of phenyl, hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, phenylalkyl, and phenyl and phenyl-alkyl substituted with one or more alkyl or alkoxy groups.
- 7. The fiber of claim 6 wherein said a block is a recurring unit wherein Z is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR17## wherein n is 1, 2 or 3.
- 8. The fiber of claim 7 wherein n the a block is of the Structural Formula I, n is 1 and z is: ##STR18##
- 9. The fiber of claim 6 wherein said A block comprises recurring moieties selected from the group consisting of: ##STR19## wherein: R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are hydrogen; and
- R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are the same or different and are hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl, phenylalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, phenyl substituted with one or more alkyl or alkoxy groups; alkoxy, alkanoyl, or dialkylamino.
- 10. The fiber of claim 9 wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are the same or different and are phenyl, phenylalkyl, alkylphenyl or alkyl.
- 11. The fiber of claim 10 wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are the same or different and are alkyl or phenyl.
- 12. The fiber of claim 11 wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are the same.
- 13. The fiber of claim 12 wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are alkyl.
- 14. The fiber or claim 13 wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are lower alkyl of from about 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 15. The fiber of claim 14 wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 methyl.
- 16. The fiber of claim 13 wherein said B-block comprises recurring monomeric units derived from delta lactones, lactides, or trimethylene carbonate.
- 17. The copolymer of claim 16 wherein said B-block contains only one type of recurring monomeric unit.
- 18. The fiber of claim 16 wherein said B-block contains more than one type of recurring monomeric unit which are randomly distributed throughout said B-block, or distributed said B-block or in blocks.
- 19. The fiber of claim 17 wherein said B-block is derived from caprolactone or trimethylene carbonate and said "A" block is derived from 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-2-one.
- 20. The fiber of claim 18 wherein said A block is derived from 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one and said B-block is derived from a copolymer derived from trimethylene carbonate and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxan-2-one.
- 21. An implantable medical device which is a fabric woven totally or in part from fibers of claim 1.
- 22. An implantable medical device comprising a body, said body comprising at least one portion formed from a biodegradable block copolymer consisting essentially at least one crystalline or semi-crystalline rigid "A" block, and at least one flexible, amorphous "B" block,
- said "A" block formed from at least one type of recurring monomeric unit of the following General Structure I or II: ##STR20## wherein: Z is ##STR21## or a combination thereof where Z is selected from such that there are no adjacent heteroatoms;
- n and m are the same or different at each occurrence and are integers from 1 to 8;
- R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are the same or different at each occurrence and are hydrogen, alkoxyaryl, aryloxyaryl, arylalkyl, alkylarylalkyl, arylalkylaryl, alkylaryl, arylcarbonylalkyl, aryloxyalkyl, alkyl, aryl, alkylcarbonylalkyl, cycloalkyl, arylcarbonylaryl, alkylcarbonylaryl, alkoxyalkyl, or aryl or alkyl substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, dialkylamino, diarylamino or alkylarylamino;
- R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are the same or different and are R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, dialkylamino, diarylamino, alkylarylamino, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkanoyl, or arylcarbonyl; or any two of R.sub.1 to R.sub.6 substituents together may form an alkylene chain completing a 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 membered alicyclic, fused, spiro, bicyclic and/or tricyclic ring system, which system may optionally include one or more non-adjacent carbonyl, oxa, alkylaza or arylaza groups; and
- said "B" block is different from said A-block and consists of at least one type of recurring unit derived from monomers selected from the group consisting of lactones, hydroxycarboxylic acids, lactides, epoxides, cyclic ethers, dioxanones other than carbonates, polyols, orthoesters, carbonates, and epoxides/CO.sub.2.
- 23. A medical device according to claim 22 which further comprises a biodurable portion.
