Claims
- 1. A composition useful as a dispersant additive in lubricating oil compositions comprising reaction product of:
- (i) at least one intermediate adduct consisting essentially of reaction product of
- (a) at least one polyepoxide wherein the polyepoxide contains at least two oxirane rings joined by a divalent organic moiety selected from hydrocarbon moieties and substituted hydrocarbon moieties, and
- (b) at least one polyamine wherein the polyamine contains at least two reactive amino groups selected from primary amino groups and secondary amino groups; and
- (ii) at least one hydrocarbyl substituted C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 monocarboxylic or C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid producing material wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent is derived from olefin polymer having a number average molecular weight of about 500 to about 6,000.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said olefin polymer is polyisobutylene.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein said dicarboxylic acid producing material is maleic anhydride.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein the number average molecular weight of said polyisobutylene is from about 800 to about 2,500.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said reactive amino groups are primary amino groups.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamine contains at least one secondary amino group.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamine is an aliphatic saturated amine represented by the formula ##STR48## wherein: R.sup.IV, R' and R''' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.25 straight or branched chain alkyl radicals, C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 alkoxy C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkylene radicals, and C.sub.2 and C.sub.12 alkylamino C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkylene radicals;
- each s is independently selected from integers having a value of from 2 to 6; and
- t is a number of 0 to 10, with the proviso that when t=0 at least one of R.sup.IV, R''' or R' must be hydrogen such that there are at least two of either primary or secondary amino groups.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamine is selected from poly(alkylene amines).
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyamine is a poly(oxyalkylene amine).
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein said hydrocarbon moiety is selected from alkylene, cycloalkylene, alkenylene, arylene, aralkenylene, and alkarylene moieties.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyepoxide contains at least two oxirane rings wherein on oxirane ring carbon atom is bonded to two hydrogen atoms.
- 12. The composition of claim 11 wherein said polyepoxide contains at least two oxirane rings wherein one oxirane ring carbon atom is bonded to two hydrogen atoms and the second oxirane ring carbon atom is bonded to one hydrogen atom.
- 13. A lubricating composition in the form of a concentrate comprising (a) from about 2 to 80 wt. % of the dispersant additive of claim 1 and (B) from about 20 to 98 wt. % lubricating oil.
- 14. An oleaginous composition comprising:
- (A) a major amount of lubricating oil; and
- (B) a minor amount of an oil soluble dispersant comprising reaction product of
- (i) at least one intermediate adduct consisting essentially of the reaction product of
- (a) at least one polyepoxide wherein the polyepoxide contains at least two oxirane rings joined by a divalent organic moiety selected from hydrocarbon moieties and substituted hydrocarbon moieties, and
- (b) at least one polyamine wherein the polyamine contains at least two reactive amino groups selected from primary amino groups and secondary amino groups and
- (ii) at least one hydrocarbyl substituted C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 monocarboxylic or C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid producing material wherein the hydrocarbyl substituent is derived from olefin polymer having a number average molecular weight of about 500 to about 6,000.
- 15. The composition of claim 14 wherein said hydrocarbyl substituted mono- or dicarboxylic acid producing material is comprised of reaction product of olefin polymer of a C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 monoolefin having a number average molecular weight of about 500 to about 6,000 and a monounsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid producing material.
- 16. The composition of claim 15 wherein said olefin polymer is polyisobutylene.
- 17. The composition of claim 14 wherein said reactive amino groups are primary amino groups.
- 18. The composition of claim 14 wherein said polyamine contains at least one secondary amino group.
- 19. The composition of claim 14 wherein said polyamine is an aliphatic saturated amine represented by the formula ##STR49## wherein: R.sup.IV, R' and R''' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.25 straight or branched chain alkyl radicals, C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 alkoxy C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkylene radicals, and C.sub.1 and C.sub.12 alkylamino C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkylene radicals;
- each s is independently selected from integers having a value of from 2 to 6; and
- t is a number of 0 to 10, with the proviso that when t=0 at least one of R.sup.IV, R''' or R' must be hydrogen such that there are at least two of either primary or secondary amino groups.
- 20. The composition of claim 14 wherein said polyamine is selected from poly(alkylene amines).
- 21. The composition of claim 14 wherein said polyamine is a poly(oxyalkylene amine).
- 22. The composition of claim 14 wherein said hydrocarbon moiety is selected from alkylene cycloalkylene, alkenylene, arylene, aralkenylene, and arkarylene moieties.
- 23. The composition of claim 14 wherein said polyepoxide contains at least two oxirane rings wherein one oxirane ring carbon atom is bonded to two hydrogen atoms.
- 24. The composition of claim 23 wherein said polyepoxide contains at least two oxirane rings wherein one oxirane ring carbon atom is bonded to two hydrogen atoms and the second oxirane ring carbon atoms is bonded to one hydrogen atom.
- 25. A process for preparing a composition useful as a lubricating oil dispersant additive composition consisting essentially of the steps of:
- (i) reacting at least one polyepoxide wherein the polyepoxide contains at least two oxirane rings joined by a divalent organic moiety selected from hydrocarbon moieties and substituted hydrocarbon moieties, with at least one polyamine wherein the polyamine contains at least two reactive amino groups selected from primary amino groups and secondary amino groups to form polyepoxide intermediate adduct; and
- (ii) reacting said polyepoxide intermediate adduct with at least one hydrocarbyl substituted C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 monocarboxylic or C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid producing material, said hydrocarbyl substituted acid producing material, in turn, being formed by reacting an olefin polymer of at least one C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 monoolefin having a number average molecular weight of about 500 to about 6,000 and a monounsaturated C.sub.3 -C.sub.10 monocarboxylic acid or C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 dicarboxylic acid material.
- 26. The process of claim 25 wherein said C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid material is maleic anhydride.
- 27. The process of claim 25 wherein said polyamine has from 2 to about 60 total carbon atoms and from about 2 to about 12 nitrogen atoms.
- 28. The process of claim 27 wherein said polyamine is an aliphatic saturated amine having the formula: ##STR50## wherein R.sup.IV, R', and R''' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.25 straight or branched chain alkyl radicals, C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 alkoxy C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkylene radicals, and C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 alkylamino C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkylene radicals; each s is the same or a different number of from 2 to 6; and t is a number of from 0 to 10, with the priviso that when t=0 at least one of R.sup.IV, R''' or R' must be H such that there are at least two of either primary or secondary amino groups.
- 29. The process of claim 25, wherein said amine is selected from poly(alkylene amines).
- 30. The process of claim 25 wherein said polyamine is a poly(oxyalkylene amine).
- 31. The process of claim 25 wherein the polyamine reactant is present in excess in the polyepoxidepolyamine reaction mixture, relative to the polyepoxide reactant.
- 32. The process of claim 25 wherein the polyepoxide reactant is used in an amount sufficient to provide from about 0.01 to about 10 equivalents of epoxide moieties per one reactive amino moiety, said reactive amino moiety being selected from the group consisting of primary and secondary amino moieties.
- 33. The process of claim 22 wherein the polyepoxide reactant is used in an amount sufficient to provide from about 0.1 to about 5 equivalents of epoxide moieties per one reactive amino moiety.
