Claims
- 1. A polyfunctional thiirane selected from the group consisting of polyfunctional thiiranes represented by the following general formulas:
- 2. The polyfunctional thiirane of claim 1 wherein R1, R2 and R3 are each selected independently for each structure from straight or branched chain alkylene.
- 3. The polyfunctional thiirane of claim 2 wherein R1, R2 and R3 are each selected independently from the group consisting of methylene and ethylene.
- 4. A polymerizable composition comprising the polyfunctional thiirane of claim 1.
- 5. The polymerizable composition of claim 4, wherein a polymerizate of said polymerizable composition has a refractive index of at least 1.6, and an Abbe number of at least 27.
- 6. The polymerizate of claim 5.
- 7. A photochromic article comprising:
(a) the polymerizate of claim 6; and (b) a photochromic amount of organic photochromic substance.
- 8. The photochromic article of claim 7 wherein the organic photochromic substance is selected from the group consisting of spiro(indoline)naphthoxazines, spiro(indoline)benzoxazines, benzopyrans, naphthopyrans, chromenes, organo-metal dithizonates, fulgides and fulgimides and mixtures of such organic photochromic substances.
- 9. The polymerizable composition of claim 4 further comprising a monomer selected from the group consisting of at least one second polyfunctional thiirane; at least one monofuctional thiirane; at least one polythiol monomer; at least one cyclic anhydride monomer; an epoxide monomer having at least one epoxide group; an ethylenically unsaturated cationically polymerixable monomer having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group; and mixtures thereof.
- 10. The polymerizable composition of claim 4 wherein said polymerizable composition is polymerized by heating in the presence of a thermal polymerization catalyst.
- 11. The polymerizable composition of claim 10 wherein said thermal polymerization catalyst is selected from the group consisting of amine, phosphine, mineral acid, Lewis acid and carboxylic acid.
- 12. The polymerizable composition of claim 4 wherein a polymerizate of said polymerizable composition has a refractive index of at least 1.6, and an Abbe number of at least 29.
- 13. The polymerizate of claim 12.
- 14. The polymerizable composition of claim 5 wherein said polymerizate of said polymerizable composition has a 15 second Barcol hardness of at least 1.
- 15. The polymerizable composition of claim 12 wherein said polymerizate of said polymerizable composition has a 15 second Barcol hardness of at least 1.
