Claims
- 1. A polymer having a trimethylamine content of below 30 ppm and containing at least about 30 weight percent of glutarimide units having the structure ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are separately H or CH.sub.3, and R.sub.3 is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, aralkyl, substituted aralkyl, or heterocyclic, prepared by the process comprising:
- a) mixing the polymer in the molten state with methanol, ethanol, water, or mixtures thereof in their liquid state;
- b) removing the methanol, ethanol, water, or mixtures thereof in their liquid state; and
- c) devolatilizing the molten polymer by application of vacuum.
- 2. The polymer of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 are CH.sub.3, and wherein the polymer further contains units derived from methyl methacrylate.
- 3. The polymer of claim 1 having a trimethylamine content of less than about 3 ppm.
- 4. A blend of from about 5 to about 95 parts of the polymer of claim 1 with about 95 to about 5 parts of poly(vinyl chloride).
- 5. The blend of claim 4 containing from about 1 to about 40 parts (per 100 parts of the poly(vinyl chloride)) of the polymer containing at least about 30 weight percent of glutarimide units.
- 6. The blend of claim 5, wherein the polymer has a content of trimethylamine less than about 3 ppm.
