Claims
- 1. A process for preparing polyhexamethylenimine having an average degree of polymerization of at least 3, which comprises condensing hexamethylenediamine at a temperature of from 50.degree. to 300.degree. C. in the presence of a palladium catalyst selected from the group consisting of metallic palladium and palladium compounds to form polyhexamethylenimine, removing the catalyst from the reaction mixture, and recovering the polyhexamethylenimine.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein a solvent is added to the reaction mixture to dissolve it, and the catalyst is separated by filtration.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the condensation reaction is carried out in an atmosphere of nitrogen or a mixture of it with ammonia.
- 4. The process of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein hexamethylenediamine and at least one amine of the general formula ##STR22## wherein m is an integer of 2 to 9, and n is an integer of 1 to 5 with the proviso that when m is 6, n is not 1, to form a copolymer having a structural unit of the formula --(CH.sub.2).sub.6 --NH-- and a structural unit of the formula ##STR23## wherein m and n are the same as defined above.
