Claims
- 1. A gas-barrier polymer blend comprising
- a) from about 20% to about 95% by weight of a first polymer containing at least 50 mole percent mers of one or both of C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alky(meth)acrylates and glutarimides and forming a continuous phase, and
- b) from about 2.5% to about 40% by weight of a second polymer containing ethylene mers and alkenoxy (meth)acrylate mers and having at least 50 mole percent vinyl alcohol mers which is either miscible with, or forms a discontinuous phase in, the continuous phase, wherein the permeability to oxygen of the blend is 10% or less of the permeability of the first polymer alone.
- 2. The gas-barrier polymer blend of claim 1 wherein the alkenoxy terminates in hydrogen, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, C.sub.6 aryl or C.sub.7 -C.sub.30 alkaryl group.
- 3. A gas-barrier polymer blend comprising
- a) from about 20% to about 95% by weight of a first polymer containing at least 50 mole percent mers of one or both of C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl(meth)acrylates and glutarimides and forming a continuous phase, and
- b) from about 2.5% to about 40% by weight of a second polymer having at least 50 mole percent vinyl alcohol mers which is either miscible with, or forms a discontinuous phase in, the continuous phase, wherein the permeability to oxygen of the blend is 10% or less of the permeability of the first polymer alone, in the form of a laminar film or sheet having one or more additional layers.
- 4. The gas-barrier polymer blend of claim 3 wherein the first polymer is present at from about 30% to about 95% by weight of the blend.
- 5. The gas-barrier polymer blend of claim 3 wherein the glutarimide has the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are selected from H and lower alkyl, and R3 is selected from hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl and aralkyl.
- 6. The gas-barrier polymer blend of claim 3 wherein the C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl (meth)acrylate is methyl methacrylate and R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 of the glutarimide are methyl.
- 7. The gas-barrier polymer blend of claim 3 wherein the first polymer contains at least about 80 mole percent mers of glutarimide.
- 8. The gas-barrier polymer blend of claim 3 wherein the first polymer contains at least about 90 mole percent mers of C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alkyl (meth)acrylate.
- 9. The gas-barrier polymer blend of claim 3 wherein the second polymer is present at from about 5% to about 35% by weight of the blend.
