Claims
- 1. An article having thereon a coating comprising the fused product of:
- (A) a primer coat directly in contact with the surface of the article, the primer coat comprising a polyether resin; and
- (B) at least one top coat overlying the primer coat, the top coat comprising a fluorocarbon resin and an additive comprising: a poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS); or an inorganic crystalline ceramic powder, or a mixture thereof.
- 2. An article according to claim 1 wherein said polyether resin is polyethersulfone resin (PES).
- 3. An article according to claim 1 wherein said polyether resin is polyether ketone resin (PEK).
- 4. An article according to claim 1 wherein said polyether resin is polyether ether ketone resin (PEEK).
- 5. An article according to claim 1 wherein said additive includes a mixture of PPS and inorganic crystalline ceramic powder.
- 6. An article according to claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 wherein said additive is said PPS.
- 7. An article according to claim 1, 2, 3, or 4 wherein said additive is said inorganic crystalline ceramic powder.
- 8. An article according to claim 1 wherein said fluorocarbon resin consists essentially of perfluoroalkoxy tetrafluoroethylene copolymer resin (PFA).
- 9. An article according to claim 7 wherein said powder consists essentially of a metal carbide.
- 10. A composition according to claim 9 wherein said metal carbide consists essentially of silicon carbide, zirconium carbide, tungsten carbide, or boron carbide.
- 11. A composition according to claim 9 wherein said metal carbide consists essentially of silicon carbide.
- 12. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the particle size of said polyether resin is about 1 to about 200 microns and the particle size of said additive does not exceed that of said polyether resin.
- 13. A composition according to claim 12 wherein the particle size of said polyether resin is about 20 to about 120 microns.
- 14. An article according to claim 1 wherein said top coat comprises about 1 to about 40 wt. % of said additive.
- 15. An article according to claim 1 wherein said top coat comprises about 1 to about 25 wt. % of said additive.
- 16. An article according to claim 1 wherein said top coat comprises about 2 to about 5 wt. % of said additive.
- 17. An article having thereon a coating in the form of an adherent solid cohesive and nonporous material at ambient pressure, said coating comprising the fused product of:
- (A) a primer coat directly in contact with the surface of the article, the primer coat comprising a major amount of polyether resin; and
- (B) a top coat overlying the primer coat, the top coat comprising:
- (i) a major amount of fluorocarbon resin selected from the group consisting of (1) perfluoroalkoxytetrafluoroethylene copolymer resin (PFA), (2) ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer resin (E-CTFE), (3) ethylene-tetra-fluoroethylene copolymer resin (E-TFE), (4) poly(vinylidine fluoride) resin (PVDF), (5) tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer resin (FEP), (6) poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene) resin (CTFE), and a mixture of two or more of said fluorocarbon resins; and
- (ii) an additive selected from the group consisting of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and a ceramic material and a mixture thereof.
- 18. The article of claim 17, wherein said base coat consists essentially of a polyether resin.
- 19. The article of claim 17, wherein said fluorocarbon resin consists essentially of PFA.
- 20. The article of claim 17, wherein said polyether resin contains PEEK.
- 21. The article of claim 17, wherein said top coat comprises about 1 to about 25 wt. % of said additive.
- 22. The article of claim 17, wherein said additive comprises about 0.5 to about 5 wt. % SIC.
- 23. The article of claim 17, wherein the primer coat is adhered to a metallic surface.
- 24. The article of claim 17, wherein said coating further comprises an additional top coat overlying said top coat and comprising a fluorocarbon resin of (B)(i) and silicon carbide.
- 25. The article of claim 17, wherein said primer coat consists essentially of a polyether resin, and said top coat comprises PFA, PVDF, E-CTFE or E-TFE.
