Claims
- 1. A relatively low molecular weight polymer comprising units derived from an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid selected from fumaric acid, maleic acid, and mixtures thereof and units derived from octadienol, said polymer exhibiting a fluid viscosity of at least about 200 cp when measured in the neat state at room temperature using a Brookfield viscosimeter.
- 2. The polymer of claim 1 which exhibits a fluid viscosity of about 200 to 30,000 cp.
- 3. The polymer of claim 1 which exhibits a fluid viscosity of about 700 to 900 cp.
- 4. The polymer of claim 1 wherein said octadienol comprises a mixture of 2,7-octadien-1-ol and 1,7-octadien-3-ol.
- 5. The polymer of claim 1 wherein said unsaturated dicarboxylic acid is fumaric acid.
- 6. A process for producing a relatively low molecular weight polymer of a compound selected from dioctadienyl fumarate, dioctadienyl maleate, and mixtures thereof, said process comprising reacting octadienol with an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof selected from fumaric acid, maleic acid, maleic anhydride, lower alkyl diesters of said acid, and mixtures thereof in the presence of an esterification catalyst.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein said esterification catalyst is selected from tetraisopropyl titanate, dibutyltin oxide, lithium hydroxide, and lithium alkoxide.
- 8. The process of claim 6 wherein said esterification catalyst comprises dibutyltin oxide.
- 9. The process of claim 6 wherein said esterification catalyst is employed in an amount of about 0.01 to 1.0% by weight, based upon the weight of the reactants.
- 10. The process of claim 6 wherein said esterification catalyst is employed in an amount of about 0.1 to 0.5% by weight, based upon the weight of the reactants.
- 11. The process of claim 6 wherein the reaction is conducted at a temperature of about 140.degree. to 200.degree. C. for a period of time of about 2 to 15 hours.
- 12. The process of claim 6 wherein the molar ratio of octadienol:diacid, or lower alkyl diester thereof, is greater than about 2:1.
- 13. The process of claim 6 wherein the molar ratio of octadienol:diacid, or lower alkyl diester thereof, is about 2.1:1 to 3:1.
- 14. The process of claim 6 wherein the alkyl groups of said lower alkyl diester contain 1 to 4 cabon atoms.
- 15. The process of claim 6 wherein the alkyl groups of said lower alkyl diester are methyl groups.
- 16. The process of claim 6 which further comprises removing excess octadienol subsequent to a first polymerization and thereafter heating the product so as to effect further polymerization.
- 17. The process of claim 6 wherein said octadienol comprises a mixture of 2,7-octadien-1-ol and 1,7-octadien-3-ol.
- 18. The process of claim 6 wherein said octadienol is reacted with dimethyl fumarate.
- 19. The process of claim 6 wherein said octadienol is reacted with fumaric acid.
- 20. A process for producing a relatively low molecular weight polymer of dioctadienyl fumarate, said process comprising reacting octadienol with fumaric acid, a lower alkyl diester thereof, or mixtures of the foregoing in the presence of about 0.01 to 1.0% by weight, based upon the weight of the reactants, of dibutyltin oxide catalyst for a period of time sufficient to yield a product having a viscosity of about 200 to 30,000 cp when measured in the neat state at room temperature using a Brookfield viscosimeter.
- 21. The process of claim 20 wherein said dibutyltin oxide is present in an amount of about 0.1 to 0.5% by weight, based upon the weight of the reactants.
- 22. The process of claim 20 wherein the reaction is conducted at a temperature of about 140.degree. to 200.degree. C. for a period of time of about 2 to about 15 hours.
- 23. The process of claim 20 wherein the reaction is conducted at a temperature of about 170.degree. to 195.degree. C. for a period of time of about 2 to 15 hours.
- 24. The process of claim 20 wherein the molar ratio of octadienol:fumaric acid, or lower alkyl diester thereof, is about 2.1:1 to 3:1.
- 25. The process of claim 20 wherein the alkyl groups of said lower alkyl diester contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 26. The process of claim 20 wherein the alkyl groups of said lower alkyl diester are methyl groups.
- 27. The process of claim 20 which further comprises removing excess octadienol subsequent to a first polymerization and thereafter heating the product so as to effect further polymerization.
- 28. The process of claim 20 wherein said octadienol comprises a mixture of 2,7-octadien-1-ol and 1,7-octadien-3-ol.
