Claims
- 1. An optical amplifier doped with lanthanide ions, characterised in that the amplifier comprises a polymeric optical waveguide in which the lanthanide ion is present in the form of a complex.
- 2. An optical amplifier according to claim 1, characterised in that the lanthanide ion is an erbium ion, ytterbium ion, praseodymium ion, neodymium ion, europium ion, thulium ion and/or terbium ion.
- 3. An optical amplifier according to claim 2, characterised in that the amplifier comprises erbium ions and ytterbium ions.
- 4. An optical amplifier according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the complex comprises a host molecule encapsulating the lanthanide ion, the host molecule being patrially deuterated.
- 5. An optical amplifier according to any one of claims 1-3, characterised in that the lanthanide ion is incorporated into a compound of the formula: ##STR3## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 may be the same or different and represent: --H, an alkyl group having 1 to 50 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 1 to 50 carbon atoms, a halogenated alkyl group having 1 to 50 carbon atoms, --C(O)H, --COOH, --O--R.sub.10, --O--R.sub.10 --OH, --R.sub.10 --OH, --COOR.sub.10, COOR.sub.10 --C(O)H, --COOR.sub.10 --COOH, O--R.sub.10 --NH.sub.2, --R.sub.10 --NH.sub.2, --NO.sub.2 or an amine group;
- R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6 may be the same or different and represent: --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x COOH, --CD.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x COOH, --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x COOR.sub.9, --CD.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x COOR.sub.9, --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.3 H, --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.3 R.sub.9, --CD.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.3 R.sub.9, --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--P(O)(OR.sub.9).sub.2, --CD.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--P(O)(OR.sub.9).sub.2, --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--P(O)OH(OR.sub.9), --CD.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--P--(O)OH(OR.sub.9), --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--P(OR.sub.9).sub.3, --CD.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--P(OR.sub.9).sub.3, --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--POH(OR.sub.9).sub.2, --CD.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--POH(OR.sub.9).sub.2, --CH.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--P(O)H(OR.sub.9), --CD.sub.2 --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --O--P(O)HOR.sub.9 ;

- R.sub.7, R.sub.8 may be the same or different and represent: --C(O)--O--R.sub.10, --C(O)--COOH, --CH(O)--COOR.sub.10, --C(O)--NR.sub.10 R.sub.10 may jointly, forming a cyclical compound, represent: --CH.sub.2 --O--(CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O--).sub.n --CH2--, --CH.sub.2 --O--(CD.sub.2 --CD.sub.2 --O).sub.n --CH.sub.2 --, --(CH.sub.2 --N(R.sub.10)--CH.sub.2).sub.n+1 --, --CH.sub.2 --O--(CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --N(R.sub.10)--CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --O).sub.n --CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 --O--(CD.sub.2 --CD.sub.2 --N(R.sub.10)--CD.sub.2 --CD.sub.2 --O).sub.n --CH.sub.2 --, --C(O)--NR.sub.10 R.sub.11 --NR.sub.10 --C(O)--, --C(O)--O--R.sub.11 --O--C(O);
- n is an integer from 0 to 3;
- R.sub.9 is a (deuterated) alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a phenyl group;
- R.sub.10 is a (deuterated) alkyl group or alkenyl group having 1 to 50 carbon atoms;
- R.sub.11 is a (deuterated) alkyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms;
- wherein the term alkyl group or alkenyl group refers to branched as well as linear groups.
- 6. An optical amplifier according to any one of claims 1-3, characterised in that the polymeric optical waveguide comprises a non-linear optical polymer.
- 7. A hemispherand, characterised in that it satisfies the formula: ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 may be the same or different and represent: --H, an alkyl group having 1 to 50 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having 1 to 50 carbon atoms, a halogenated alkyl group having 1 to 50 carbon atoms, --C(O)H, --COOH, --O--R.sub.10, --O--R.sub.10 --OH, --R.sub.10 --OH, --COOR.sub.10, COOR.sub.10 --C(O)H, --COOR.sub.10 --COOH, O--R.sub.10 --NH.sub.2, --R.sub.10 --NH.sub.2, --NO.sub.2 or an amine group;
