Claims
- 1. A polymerization catalyst consisting essentially of:
- (a) a predominantly silica-containing support treated with in the range of about 0.01-20 mole %, calculated as the metal and based on the untreated support, of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of Group IIA oxide or compounds convertible to the oxide form, a Group VA or VB oxide or compounds convertible to the oxide form or sulfuric acid and then calcined in an oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature in the range of 300.degree.-800.degree. C. for a time in the range of 0.5-20 hours, prior to contact with
- (b) 0.01 to 10 wt % of at least one zerovalent chromium compound, calculated as chromium metal and based on the weight of the treated support prepared as described in (a).
- 2. A catalyst in accordance with claim 1 wherein said at least one compound is selected from the group consisting of:
- beryllium oxide,
- magnesium oxide,
- calcium oxide,
- strontium oxide,
- barium oxide,
- magnesium nitrate,
- magnesium sulfate,
- magnesium acetate,
- magnesium carbonate,
- magnesium formate,
- magnesium hydroxide,
- calcium nitrate,
- calcium sulfate
- calcium acetate,
- arsenic oxide,
- antimony oxide,
- bismuth oxide,
- antimony nitrate,
- bismuth acetate,
- bismuth nitrate,
- bismuth hydroxide,
- bismuth sulfate,
- bismuth oxalate,
- vanadium oxide,
- niobium oxide,
- tantalum oxide,
- vanadium sulfate,
- vanadyl sulfate
- vanadium chloride,
- sulfuric acid,
- and mixtures of any two or more thereof.
- 3. A catalyst in accordance with claim 1 wherein said at least one compound is selected from the group consisting of:
- calcium nitrate,
- magnesium nitrate,
- bismuth nitrate,
- vanadium oxide, and
- sulfuric acid.
- 4. A catalyst in accordance with claim 1 wherein said zerovalent chromium compound is selected from the group consisting of ##STR7## wherein each R' is independently a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl radical and x is a whole number from 1-6, inclusive.
- 5. A catalyst in accordance with claim 1 wherein said predominantly silica-containing support consists essentially of silica and less than or equal to 20 wt % of at least one other metal oxide selected from the group consisting of:
- alumina,
- boria,
- magnesia,
- titania, and
- zirconia.
- 6. A method for producing an ethylene (co)polymerization catalyst which comprises:
- (i) treating a predominantly silica-containing, support with 0.01-20 mole % of at least one compound selected from the groups consisting of Group IIIA oxide or compounds convertible to the oxide form, a Group VA or VB oxide or compounds convertible to the oxide form or sulfuric acid, wherein said mole % is based on untreated support and calculated as elemental treating metal,
- (ii) calcining the support in a dry, oxygen-containing atmosphere at a temperature in the range of 300.degree.-800.degree. C. for a time in the range of 0.5-20 hours, and thereafter
- (iii) combining the product of step (ii) with 0.01 to 10 wt % of at least one a zerovalent chromium compound, calculated as chromium metal and based on the weight of the treated support obtain in step (ii), under substantially anhydrous conditions.
- 7. A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein said at least one compound is selected from the group consisting of:
- beryllium oxide,
- magnesium oxide,
- calcium oxide,
- strontium oxide,
- barium oxide,
- magnesium nitrate,
- magnesium sulfate,
- magnesium acetate,
- magnesium carbonate,
- magnesium formate,
- magnesium hydroxide,
- calcium nitrate,
- calcium sulfate
- calcium acetate,
- arsenic oxide,
- antimony oxide,
- bismuth oxide,
- antimony nitrate,
- bismuth acetate,
- bismuth nitrate,
- bismuth hydroxide
- bismuth sulfate,
- bismuth oxalate,
- vanadium oxide,
- niobium oxide,
- tantalum oxide,
- vanadium sulfate,
- vanadyl sulfate
- vanadium chloride,
- sulfuric acid,
- and mixtures of any two or more thereof.
- 8. A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein said at least one compound is selected from the group consisting of:
- calcium nitrate,
- magnesium nitrate,
- bismuth nitrate,
- vanadium oxide, and
- sulfuric acid.
