Claims
- 1. A process comprising polymerizing at least one fluorinated monomer in an aqueous medium containing initiator and dispersing agent to obtain an aqueous dispersion of particles of fluoropolymer, wherein said dispersing agent is a combination of at least two fluorosurfactants, at least one of said fluorosurfactants being perfluoropolyether carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof, and at least one of said fluorosurfactants being fluoroalkyl carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof, or fluoroalkoxy aryl sulfonic acid or salt thereof.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein said perfluoropolyether carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof is present in minor amount in said dispersing agent.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein said amount is no more than about 25% by weight of said dispersing agent.
- 4. The process of claim 3, wherein said amount is from 0.5% to 15% by weight of said dispersing agent.
- 5. The process of claim 1, wherein at least one fluorocarbon group separating ether oxygens in said perfluoropolyether carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt has 2 or 3 carbon atoms.
- 6. The process of claim 5, wherein at least 50% of said fluorocarbon groups separating ether oxygens have 3 carbon atoms.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein said fluoroalkyl carboxylic acid or salt thereof is perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid or salt thereof.
- 8. The process of claim 1, wherein said fluoroalkyl sulfonic acid or salt thereof is perfluoroalkyl ethane sulfonic acid or salt thereof.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein said at least one fluoromonomer is selected from perfluoroolefins having 2-6 carbon atoms and fluorovinyl ethers having the formula CY2═CYOR or CY2═CYOR′OR wherein Y is H or F, and —R, and —R′— are independently completely-fluorinated or partially-fluorinated alkyl and alkylene groups containing 1-8 carbon atoms.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein functional monomer is present.
- 11. The process of claim 9, wherein said perfluoroolefins are tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene, and said fluorovinyl ethers are perfluoro(alkyl vinyl ether) wherein said alkyl has 1-3 carbon atoms.
- 12. The process of claim 1, wherein said fluoropolymer is tetrafluoroethylene polymer.
- 13. The process of claim 12, wherein said tetrafluoroethylene polymer is polytetrafluoroethylene, modified polytetrafluoroethylene, or copolymer comprising tetrafluoroethylene and at least one comonomer selected from hexafluoropropylene, perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether), perfluoro(ethyl vinyl ether) and perfluoro(propyl vinyl ether).
- 14. The process of claim 1, wherein said fluoropolymer is plastic.
- 15. The process of claim 1, wherein said fluoropolymer is elastomeric.
- 16. A process comprising polymerizing tetrafluoroethylene and optionally at least one other fluorinated monomer in an aqueous medium containing initiator and dispersing agent to obtain an aqueous dispersion of particles of fluoropolymer, wherein said dispersing agent is a combination of at least two fluorosurfactants, at least one of said fluorosurfactants being perfluoropolyether carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof, and at least one of said fluorosurfactants being fluoroalkyl carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof, or fluoroalkoxy aryl sulfonic acid or salt thereof, wherein said at least one fluorinated monomer makes less than 0.5 mole % of total monomer polymerized, and wherein some of said particles have length to diameter ratios of greater than 3.
- 17. The process of claim 16 where in at least 25% of said particles have length to diameter ratios of at greater than 3.
- 18. The process of claim 16 wherein said fluoropolymer has a molecular weight of at least 1·106.
- 19. A process comprising polymerizing tetrafluoroethylene and optionally at least one other fluorinated monomer in an aqueous medium containing initiator and dispersing agent to obtain an aqueous dispersion of particles of fluoropolymer, wherein said dispersing agent is a combination of at least two fluorosurfactants, at least one of said fluorosurfactants being perfluoropolyether carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof, and at least one of said fluorosurfactants being fluoroalkyl carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof, or fluoroalkoxy aryl sulfonic acid or salt thereof, wherein said at least one fluorinated monomer makes up less than 0.5 mole % of total monomer polymerized, and wherein those of said particles that are spherical or that have a length to diameter ratio of less than 3, average no more than 150 nm in their greatest dimension.
- 20. The process of claim 1 wherein said fluorinated monomer is polymerized in a monomer mixture that comprises 30 to 70 mole percent tetrafluoroethylene, 70 to 30 mole percent ethylene and from 0 to 15 mole percent of at least one other copolymerizable alpha-olefin monomer.
- 21. The process of claim 1 wherein all of said perfluorpolyether carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof is present at the beginning of said polymerizing and a portion of said fluoroalkyl carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof, or fluoroalkoxy aryl sulfonic acid or salt thereof is present at the beginning of said polymerizing, and adding the remainder of said fluoroalkyl carboxylic or sulfonic acid or salt thereof, or fluoroalkoxy aryl sulfonic acid or salt thereof after said polymerizing has begun.
- 22. Fluoropolymer made by the process of claim 1.
