Claims
- 1. A process for the polymerization of olefins, comprising the step of contacting, under olefin polymerizing conditions, a monomer component comprising one or more of an olefin of the formula H2C═CHR4, a norbornene, a styrene, a cyclopentene or a polar olefin, with a transition metal complex of a ligand of the formula
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the transition metal is a Group 3-11 transition metal.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein the transition metal is selected from the group consisting of Ni, Zr, Ti, Fe, Co and Cu.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein Z is O or NR13 and n is 0.
- 5. The process of claim 1, wherein:
Y is oxo, Z is NR13, R1 is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl, n is 0, and R13 is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl having an Es of less than −1.0 or aryl or substituted aryl in which at least one bond vicinal to the free bond of the aromatic group is substituted; or Y is NR and Z is NR13, n is 0, R1 is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl, R12 and R13 are each independently hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, one or both of which has an Es of less than −1.0, or aryl or substituted aryl in which at least one bond vicinal to the free bond of the aromatic group is substituted.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein the transition metal complex has the formula (L1)x(L2)y(L3)zM (VIII), wherein L3 is (I); z is 1 or 2; M is a transition metal of oxidation state q; y is an integer of 1 to 3; x=(q−z); each L1 is independently a monodentate, monoanionic ligand, wherein at least one L1 group is a ligand that may add to an olefin; and L2 is a monodentate neutral ligand which may be displaced by an olefin, or an empty coordination site; or L1 and L2 taken together are a monoanionic, bidentate ligand into which an olefin molecule may insert between the ligand and M.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein the transition metal complex has the formula
- 8. The process of claim 1, wherein a cocatalyst is present.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein the monomer component comprises ethylene.
- 10. A transition metal complex of a ligand of the formula
- 11. The transition metal complex of claim 10, wherein the transition metal is a Group 3-11 transition metal.
- 12. The transition metal complex of claim 11, wherein the transition metal is selected from the group consisting of Ni, Zr, Ti, Fe, Co and Cu.
- 13. The transition metal complex of claim 10, wherein Z is O or NR13 and n is 0.
- 14. The transition metal complex of claim 10, wherein:
Y is oxo, Z is NR13, R1 is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl, n is 0, and R13 is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl having an Es of less than −1.0 or aryl or substituted aryl in which at least one bond vicinal to the free bond of the aromatic group is substituted; or Y is NR12 and Z is NR3, n is 0, R1 is hydrogen or hydrocarbyl, R12 and R13 are each independently hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl, one or both having an Es of less than −1.0, or aryl or substituted aryl in which at least one bond vicinal to the free bond of the aromatic group is substituted.
- 15. The transition metal complex of claim 10, having the formula (L1)x(L2)y(L3)zM (VIII), wherein L3 is (I); z is 1 or 2; M is a transition metal of oxidation state q; y is an integer of 1 to 3; x=(q−z); each L1 is independently a monodentate, monoanionic ligand, wherein at least one L1 group is a ligand that may add to an olefin; and L2 is a monodentate neutral ligand which may be displaced by an olefin, or an empty coordination site; or L1 and L2 taken together are a monoanionic, bidentate ligand into which an olefin molecule may insert between the ligand and M.
- 16. The transition metal complex of claim 10, having the formula
- 17. A process for the manufacture of a polar copolymer, wherein one or more hydrocarbon olefins, one or more polar olefins, and a polymerization catalyst system having a transition metal complex component containing a transition metal of groups 6-11 or a lanthanide metal, are contacted under polymerizing conditions to form said polar copolymer, wherein the transition metal complex component comprises a Zwitterionic complex.
- 18. The process of claim 17, wherein said transition metal is from Groups 8-11.
- 19. The process of claim 18, wherein said transition metal is Pd, Ni or Cu.
- 20. The process of claim 19, wherein said transition metal is Ni.
- 21. The process of claim 17, wherein a Lewis acid of said Zwitterionic complex is a borane or an aluminane.
- 22. The process of claim 20, wherein a Lewis acid of said Zwitterionic complex is a borane or an aluminane.
- 23. The process of claim 21, wherein said Lewis acid is a tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane, triphenylborane, or a trihydrocarbylaluminum.
- 24. The process of claim 22, wherein said Lewis acid is a tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane, triphenylborane, or a trihydrocarbylaluminum.
- 25. The process of claim 17, wherein said hydrocarbon olefin is ethylene and said polar olefin is one or more of H2C═CHR5CO2R6, wherein R5 is n-alkylene or a covalent bond, and R6 is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl.
- 26. The process of claim 20, wherein said hydrocarbon olefin is ethylene and said polar olefin is one or more of H2C═CHR5CO2R6, wherein R5 is n-alkylene or a covalent bond, and R6 is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl.
- 27. The process of claim 20, wherein an ethylene pressure is about 700 kPa or more, and said process is run at about 50° C. to about 170° C.
- 28. The process of claim 25, wherein an ethylene pressure is about 700 kPa or more, and said process is run at about 50° C. to about 170° C.
