Claims
- 1. A hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer comprising a monomeric repeat unit represented by the formula: wherein:each n is independently selected and is a number from 1 to 3; each R is independently selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl; each Rf is independently selected from the group consisting of linear and branched perfluorinated alkyls and isoalkyls having from 1 to about 20 carbons, and oxa-perfluorinated polyethers having from 4 to about 60 carbons; and x is about 10 to about 250.
- 2. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 1, wherein said FOX prepolymer has a polydispersity in the range of about 1.1 to about 2.5, and ranges in number average molecular weight from about 2,000 to about 50,000.
- 3. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 1, wherein each R is methyl and each Rf is independently selected from the group consisting of linear perfluorinated alkyls.
- 4. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 3, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 5. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 3, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 6. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 3, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluorooctyloxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 7. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 3, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-pentadecafluoroooctyloxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 8. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 3, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10-heptadecafluorodecyloxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 9. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 3, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,11,11,12,12,12-heneicosafluorododecyloxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 10. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 1, wherein x is from about 10 to about 68.
- 11. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 10, wherein R is methyl and each Rf is independently selected from the group consisting of perfluorinated alkyls.
- 12. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 11, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 13. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 11, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 14. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 11, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-trifluorooctyloxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 15. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 11, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-pentadecafluoroooctyloxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 16. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 11, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10-heptadecafluorodecyloxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 17. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 11, wherein said FOX prepolymer is poly(3-(3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,11,11,12,12,12-heneicosafluorododecyloxymethyl)-3-methyloxetane).
- 18. A hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer composition comprising a monomeric repeat unit represented by the formula: whereineach n is independently selected and is a number from 1 to 3; each R independently is independently selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl; each Rf is independently selected from the group consisting of linear and branched perfluorinated alkyls and isoalkyls having from 1 to about 20 carbons, and oxa-perfluorinated polyethers having from 4 to about 60 carbons; and x is about 10 to about 250; wherein said FOX prepolymer is produced by the following process steps:a) providing a first solution comprising a catalyst, an initiator, and a solvent; b) contacting said first solution with a second solution of a FOX monomer in a solvent to produce a reaction mixture; and c) maintaining said reaction mixture at a temperature ranging from about −20° C. to about 80° C. for a time sufficient to react said first solution with said second solution to produce said FOX prepolymer composition.
- 19. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 18, wherein said first and second solution solvents are inert solvents selected from the group consisting of methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, trichloroethylene, chlorobenzene, ethyl bromide, dichloroethane, trichlorotrifluoroethane, fluorinated solvents and mixtures thereof.
- 20. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer in accordance with claim 18, wherein said catalyst is a Lewis acid selected from the group consisting of boron trifluoride etherate, boron trifluoride tetrahydrofuranate, phosphorous pentafluoride, antimony pentafluoride, zinc chloride, aluminum bromide and mixtures thereof.
- 21. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer composition in accordance with claim 18, wherein said initiator is a polyhydroxy aliphatic compound having from about 2 to about 5 carbons and from about 1 to 3 hydroxy groups.
- 22. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer composition in accordance with claim 18, wherein said initiator is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol; butane-1,4-diol; propylene glycol; isobutane-1,3-diol; pentane-1,5-diol; pentaerythritol; trimethylolpropane, trifluoroethanol and mixtures of at least two thereof, and wherein said process further comprises recovering as a reaction product said FOX prepolymer composition.
- 23. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer composition in accordance with claim 21, wherein said initiator is butane-1,4-diol.
- 24. The hydroxy-terminated FOX prepolymer composition in accordance with claim 23, wherein said catalyst is a Lewis acid selected from the group consisting of boron trifluoride etherate, boron trifluoride tetrahydrofuranate, phosphorous pentafluoride, antimony pentafluoride, zinc chloride, aluminum bromide and mixtures thereof.
