Claims
- 1. A polymer comprising the reaction product of an unsaturated monomer, an initiator, and a chain transfer agent having the formula ##STR5## wherein: R.sup.1 is an optionally substituted group selected from aryl, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, carboxy, acyloxy, carbamoyl and cyanol
- Y is OR.sup.2 or CH.sub.2 X(R.sup.2).sub.n ;
- R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl; alkenyl; alkynyl; saturated, unsaturated and aromatic carbocyclic rings; and saturated, unsaturated and aromatic heterocyclic rings; each of said carbocyclic and heterocyclic rings having 3 to 14 atoms; said R.sup.2 group optionally substituted with a substituent selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, amino, halogen, phosphonate, trialkylsilyl, allyl, cyano, epoxy, carboxylic acid and carboxlic acid ester, alkoxy and alkyl derivatives;
- X is selected from the group consisting of sulfur, silicon, selenium, phosphorous, bromine, chlorine, tin, phosphonate, sulfoxide, sulfone, and phosphine oxide; and
- n is from 0 to 3 to satisfy the valency of X and, when greater than 1, the groups represented by R.sup.2 are the same or different;
- the polymer having an end group combination selected from (i) and (ii):
- (i) R.sup.2 and --C(O)R.sup.1,
- (ii) X(R.sup.2)n and --C(CH.sub.2)R.sup.1.
- 2. A polymer according to claim 1 wherein X is selected from sulphur, silicon, selenium, phosphorus, chlorine, bromine, tin, phosphonate, sulphoxide, sulphone, and phosphine oxide.
- 3. A polymer according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the groups R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is or contains a reactive substituent group, whereby the polymer produced contains said reactive group and is thereby capable of undergoing a further chemical reaction, subsequent to the polymerization reaction.
- 4. A polymer according to claim 1 wherein compound A is one of the following compounds:

A compound according to claim 1 wherein at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is substituted and the substituents which are the same or different are selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl, amino, halogen, phosphonate, trialkyoxysilyl, alkyl, cyano, epoxy, carboxylic acid and carboxylic acid ester.
