Claims
- 1. An isolated nucleic acid segment comprising a nucleotide sequence sharing 80-100% identical nucleotides with SEQ ID NOs:1 or 2 or a functional part thereof as being determined using default parameters of a sequence analysis software package developed by the Genetic Computer Group (GCG) at the University of Wisconsin, said nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having a β-carotene C-4-oxygenase activity.
- 2. The isolated DNA segment of claim 1, wherein said nucleotide sequence includes a sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NOs:1 or 2 or a functional part thereof.
- 3. The isolated DNA segment of claim 1, wherein said nucleotide sequence includes a sequence as set forth between and including nucleotides 166 and 1152 of SEQ ID NOs:1 or 2.
- 4. A recombinant vector DNA molecule comprising the nucleic acid segment as of claim 1.
- 5. A host comprising a recombinant vector DNA molecule as in claim 4, said host is selected from the group consisting of a microorganism and a plant.
- 6. A host comprising the nucleic acid segment of claim 1, said host is selected from the group consisting of a microorganism and a plant.
- 7. A method of producing a xanthophyll, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a host as in claim 5; (b) providing said host with growing conditions for production of said xanthophyll; and (c) extracting said xanthophyll from said host.
- 8. A method of producing a xanthophyll, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) providing a host as in claim 6; (b) providing said host with growing conditions for production of said xanthophyll; and (c) extracting said xanthophyll from said host.
- 9. A food additive comprising the host of claim 5.
- 10. A food additive comprising the host of claim 6.
- 11. A transgenic plant expressing a transgene including a nucleotide sequence sharing 80-100% identical nucleotides with SEQ ID NO:1 or a functional part thereof as being determined using default parameters of a sequence analysis software package developed by the Genetic Computer Group (GCG) at the University of Wisconsin, said nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide having a β-carotene C-4-oxygenase activity.
- 12. The transgenic plant of claim 11, wherein said transgene includes a sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:1 or a functional part thereof.
- 13. The transgenic plant of claim 11, wherein said transgene includes a sequence as set forth between and including nucleotides 166 and 1152 of SEQ ID NO:1.
- 14. A recombinant DNA vector comprising a first DNA segment encoding a polypeptide for directing a protein into plant chloroplasts or chromoplasts and an in frame second DNA segment encoding a polypeptide having β-carotene C-4-oxygenase activity.
- 15. The recombinant DNA vector of claim 14, wherein a nucleotide sequence of said second DNA segment shares 80-100% identical nucleotides with SEQ ID NO:1 or a functional part thereof as determined using default parameters of a sequence analysis software package developed by the Genetic Computer Group (GCG) at the University of Wisconsin.
- 16. The recombinant DNA vector of claim 14, wherein said second DNA segment includes a sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:1 or a functional part thereof.
- 17. The recombinant DNA vector of claim 14, wherein said second DNA segment includes a sequence as set forth between and including nucleotides 166 and 1152 of SEQ ID NO:1.
- 18. The recombinant DNA vector as in claim 14, wherein said first DNA segment is derived from the Pds gene of tomato.
- 19. An isolated polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having a β-carotene C-4-oxygenase activity and sharing 80-100% identical amino acids with SEQ ID NO:4 or a functional part thereof as being determined using default parameters of a sequence analysis software package developed by the Genetic Computer Group (GCG) at the University of Wisconsin.
- 20. The isolated polypeptide of claim 19, wherein said amino acid sequence is as set forth in SEQ ID NO:4 of a functional part thereof.
- 21. An isolated polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having a β-carotene C-4-oxygenase activity and being encoded by a nucleic acid sequence sharing 80-100% identical nucleotides with SEQ ID NOs: 1 or 2 or a functional part thereof as being determined using default parameters of a sequence analysis software package developed by the Genetic Computer Group (GCG) at the University of Wisconsin.
- 22. An isolated polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having a β-carotene C-4-oxygenase activity and sharing 80-100% identical amino acids with SEQ ID NO:4 or a functional part thereof as being determined using a sequence analysis software according to which cyanobacterial phytoene synthase and tomato phytoene synthase share 57% identical amino acids.
