Claims
- 1. A polyurethane foam system which comprises, based on the total weight of ingredients, two components, the first component comprising
- (A) 20 to about 100 parts of an oxyalkylation polyol product prepared by the process of
- (1) providing a reaction mixture containing
- (a) a phenol, at least in an amount sufficient to form a complex with aluminum or iron substances in the mixture,
- (b) a non-phenolic active hydrogen compound having from 2 to 8 active hydrogens per molecule and having an average molecular weight below about 10,000, and
- (c) a substance containing aluminum or iron which will form a complex with the phenol (a), in an amount sufficient to form a complex with the phenol (a),
- (2) heating the mixture to a temperature in the range of from about 80.degree. to about 250.degree. C., and
- (3) oxyalkylating the heated mixture by adding thereto sufficient alkylene oxide having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms to form an oxyalkylated polyol product,
- (C) 0.2 to about 2 parts of a polymerization catalyst,
- (D) 0.15 to about 3 parts of a wetting agent, and
- (E) 5 to about 30 parts of a blowing agent, the second (B) components comprising 40 to about 60 parts of a polyarylpolyalkylene polyisocyanate having a functionality of about 2.2 to about 3.3 or of an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer derived from the reaction of a stoichiometric excess of said polyarylpolyalkylene polyisocyanate with said oxyalkylated polyol; wherein the catalyst residues from the production of polyol (A) are not removed prior to use of said polyol in said foam system.
- 2. A system as defined in claim 1, wherein the oxyalkylation polyol is one in which at least one of the compounds (a) and (b) in the reaction mixture is halogenated.
- 3. A system as defined in claim 1 wherein the oxyalkylation polyol is one in which the reaction mixture of (a), (b), and (c) further includes a trivalent phosphorous neutral ester flame retardant.
- 4. A polyurethane foam prepared from the polyurethane system of claim 1.
- 5. A polyurethane foam composition comprising, based on the total weight of ingredients, a foamed mixture containing
- (A) 20 to about 100 parts of an oxyalkylated polyol component prepared by
- (1) providing a mixture containing
- (a) a phenol, at least in an amount sufficient to form a complex with an aluminum or iron substance in the mixture,
- (b) a non-phenolic active hydrogen compound having 2 to 8 active hydrogens per molecule and having an average molecular weight below about 10,000,
- (c) a substance containing aluminum or iron which will form a complex with phenol a), and
- (d) an organic acid anhydride,
- at least one of which components (a), (b) and (d) being halogenated,
- (2) heating the mixture to a temperature in the range of from about 80.degree. to about 250.degree. C., and
- (3) oxyalkylating the heated mixture by adding thereto sufficient alkylene oxide having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms to form an oxyalkylated polyol product, per
- (B) 40 to about 60 parts of a polyarylpolyalkylene polyisocyanate having a functionality of about 2.2 to 3.3 or of an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer derived from the reaction of a stoichiometric excess of said polyarylpolyalkylene polyisocyanate with said oxyalkylation polyol,
- (C) 0.2 to about 2 parts of a wetting agent, and (D) 5 to about 30 parts of a blowing agent; wherein the catalyst residues from the production of polyol (A) are not removed prior to use of said polyol in said polyurethane.
- 6. A polyurethane foam according to claim 5, wherein the oxyalkylation component, each of the phenol (a), the active hydrogen compound (b), and the organic acid anhydride (d) is halogenated.
- 7. In a polyurethane foam which is produced by mixing and reacting a polyol, a polyarylpolyalkylene polyisocyanate, a polymerization catalyst, a wetting agent and a blowing agent, the improvement which comprises using as a polyol therein, based on the total weight of the ingredients,
- (A) 20 to about 100 parts of an oxyalkylation polyol product prepared by the process of
- (1) providing a reaction mixture containing
- (a) a phenol, at least in an amount sufficient to form a complex with aluminum or iron substances in the mixture,
- (b) a non-phenolic active hydrogen compound having from 2 to 8 active hydrogens per molecule and having an average molecular weight below about 10,000, and
- (c) a substance containing aluminum or iron which will form a complex with the phenol (a), in an amount sufficient to form a complex with the phenol (a),
- (2) heating the mixture to a temperature in the range of from about 80.degree. to about 250.degree. C., and
- (3) oxyalkylating the heated mixture by adding thereto sufficient alkylene oxide having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms to form an oxyalkylated polyol product, per
- (B) 40 to about 60 parts of a polyarylpolyalkylene polyisocyanate having a functionality of about 2.2 to about 3.3 or of an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer derived from the reaction of a stoichiometric excess of said polyarylpolyalkylene polyisocyanate with said oxyalkylation polyol,
- (C) 0.2 to about 2 parts of a polymerization catalyst,
- (D) 0.15 to about 3 parts of a wetting agent, and
- (E) an effective amount of a blowing agent; wherein the catalyst residues from the production of polyol (A) are not removed prior to use of said polyol in said polyurethane.
