Claims
- 1. Polyurethane containing a flame retardant effective amount of the product formed by a two step sequential reaction which comprises:
- (1) reacting diorgano organophosphonate represented by the formula: ##STR17## wherein R, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different organic radicals selected from saturated hydrocarbon radical, alkaryl radical, aralkyl radical, and aryl radical; with reactant consisting of (i) phosphorus oxide reagent, or (ii) phosphorus oxide reagent with an alcohol, to yield a metaphosphate/phosphonate reaction product, wherein the mole ratio of said diorgano organophosphonate to said phosphorus oxide reagent (as P.sub.2 O.sub.5) is in the range from about 1:1 to about 2.5:1, and said optionally employed alcohol is not in excess of one mole of alcohol hydroxyl per three moles of phosphorus anhydride unit formed by the reaction of phosphorus oxide reactant with diorgano organophosphonate, and;
- (2) reacting the reaction product of step (1) with reactant comprising (I) epoxide, or (II) epoxide with an alcohol to yield poly(oxyorganophosphate/phosphonate) product.
- 2. Polyurethane plastics and foams prepared by the chemical combination of isocyanates with hydroxyl-bearing poly(oxyorganophosphate/phosphonate) flame retardants, wherein said flame retardants are prepared by a two step sequential reaction which comprises:
- (1) reacting diorgano organophosphonate represented by the formula: ##STR18## wherein R, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different organic radicals selected from saturated hydrocarbon radical, alkaryl radical, aralkyl radical, and aryl radical; with reactant consisting of (i) phosphorus oxide reagent, or (ii) phosphorus oxide reagent with an alcohol, to yield a metaphosphate/phosphonate reaction product, wherein the mole ratio of said diorgano organophosphonate to said phosphorus oxide reagent (as P.sub.2 O.sub.5) is in the range from about 1:1 to about 2.5:1, and said optionally employed alcohol is not in excess of one mole of alcohol hydroxyl per three moles of phosphorus anhydride unit formed by the reaction of phosphorus oxide reactant with diorgano organophosphonate, and;
- (2) reacting the reaction product of step (1) with reactant comprising (I) epoxide, or (II) epoxide with an alcohol to yield poly(oxyorganophosphate/phosphonate) product.
- 3. Polyurethane plastics and foams of claim 2 wherein the hydroxyl-bearing poly(oxyorganophosphate/phosphonate) has a hydroxyl number of from 1 to 800.
- 4. Flexible polyurethane plastics and foams of claim 3 wherein the hydroxyl/bearing poly(oxyorganophosphate/phosphonate) has a hydroxyl number from 1 to 50.
