Claims
- 1. A process for making poly(vinylammonium formate) which comprises:
- (a) subjecting a polymer of N-vinylformamide to hydrolysis conditions in an aqueous solution in the presence of a hydrolysis agent selected from ammonia or amine having a boiling point below 100.degree. C., and
- (b) degassing the polymer solution of step (a) to remove ammonia or amine present.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said polymer of N-vinylformamide is a normally solid homopolymer of N-vinylformamide having a weight average molecular weight below 10.sup.6 and ammonia is said hydrolysis agent.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein ammonium formate is the predominant by-product of hydrolysis in step (a).
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein said polymer of N-vinylformamide is a normally solid homopolymer of N-vinylformamide having a weight average molecular weight below 10.sup.6 and an alkylamine is said hydrolysis agent.
