Claims
- 1. A polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time at least 2 minutes and forming a dental impression having a tear strength of at least 20.degree. psi (1.37 MPa) and a contact angle with water of less than about 500 at three minutes, comprising:
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g; (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition, and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the viscosity of the QM dispersion and filler are selected to achieve a desired overall composition viscosity.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein the dispersion of (a) and (b) has a viscosity of about 5,000-60,000 cps.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein said QM resin has a viscosity of about 5,000-7,000 cps.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said QM resin comprises a polyorganosiloxane comprising units of SiO.sub.4/2 and up to four units of R.sup.1 R.sup.2.sub.2 SiO.sub.1/2 wherein
- R.sup.1 is unsaturated and
- R.sup.2 is alkyl or aryl.
- 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein said QM resin comprises the formula: ##STR3##
- 7. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a finely divided platinum metal, sufficient to scavenge excess hydrogen gas generated during polymerization of said composition.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein said retarder component is a low molecular weight, vinyl functional fluid that is a linear or cyclic polysiloxane, in an amount of at least about 0.030 weight percent of said composition.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein said retarder component comprises: a fluid 1,3-divinyl, dimethyldisiloxane, in an amount of about 0.030 to 0.12 weight percent of said composition.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein said filler comprises about 15 to about 45 weight percent of said composition.
- 11. The composition of claim 10 wherein said filler comprises crystalline silicone dioxide, amorphous silicone dioxide and silanated fumed silicone dioxide.
- 12. The composition of claim 10 wherein said filler comprises cristobalite having about 4-6.mu. particle diameter, diatomaceous earth having about 4-7.mu. particle diameter and silanated fumed silica having about 160-240 m.sup.2 /g.
- 13. The composition of claim 1 wherein said surfactant comprises an HLB of about 8-11 and a pH of about 6-8.
- 14. The composition of claim 13 wherein said surfactant is a nonionic surfactant.
- 15. The composition of claim 14 wherein said surfactant is a nonylphenoxypoly(ethylenoxy)ethanol having an HLB of about 10.8.
- 16. The polyorganosiloxane composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is in the form of two components, one component including a catalyst for polymerization, wherein said QM resin dispersion comprises a viscosity of about 5000 to about 60,000 cps and said composition further comprises an emulsifying plasticizer for said catalyst component, wherein said components have compatible viscosities for mixing.
- 17. The composition of claim 16 wherein said emulsifying plasticizer imparts desired handling and flow properties to said catalyst complex to match those of the second component, wherein a suitable composition for taking a dental impression is formed.
- 18. The composition of claim 17 wherein said plasticizer is octyl benzyl phthalate.
- 19. The composition of claim 17 having, after polymerization through chemical bonding, a tear strength of about 270-300 psi (1.86-2.07 MPa) and a contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes.
- 20. The polymerizable polyorganosiloxane composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is in the form of two components including a base component and a catalyst component wherein said base component comprises said surfactants that imparts wettability to said composition and comprises about 5-8 weight percent by weight of said base component.
- 21. A method to making a dental impression, in a wet environment, of oral hard and soft tissues, comprising:
- forming a composition having a work time of at least 2 minutes by mixing
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups,
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a viscosity of about 5000-60,000 cps and a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g,
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane having a viscosity of about 35-45 cps for cross-linking said vinyl groups,
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components,
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization,
- (f) a filler,
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition, wherein said composition surface contact angle with water is less than 50.degree. after three minutes; and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher,
- placing said mixture into contact with said tissues;
- allowing said mixture to harden into a material having said impression; and
- removing said impression from said tissues, said material having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa).
- 22. A dental impression made by the method of claim 21.
- 23. The dental impression of claim 22 having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa) and a surface contact angle with water at three minutes of less than about 50.degree..
- 24. The method of claim 21 wherein said composition surface contact angle with water is less than about 50.degree. from about two minutes from placing until said impression hardens.
- 25. The method of claim 21 wherein said QM resin-containing dispersion, comprises: a first dispersion component having a viscosity of about 5,000-7,000 cps; and a second dispersion component having a viscosity of about 45,000-60,000 cps, said QM resin comprising about 20-25 weight % of said dispersions.
- 26. A method of making a first component and a second component which when mixed form a polymerizable polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time of at least 2 minutes, said polymerizable polyorganosiloxane composition upon polymerization forms a material having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa), comprising:
- (a) forming said first component, said first component including,
- (i) a QM resin containing vinyl groups, dispersed in a linear vinyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane fluid, said dispersion having a viscosity of about 5,000-60,000 cps and a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g,
- (ii) an organohydrogen polysiloxane having a viscosity of about 35-45 cps for cross-linking said vinyl groups,
- (iii) a filler, and
- (iv) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition, wherein said composition surface contact angle with water is less than 50.degree. after three minutes;
- (b) forming said second component, said second component comprising,
- (i) a QM resin containing vinyl groups, dispersed in a linear vinyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane fluid, said dispersion having a viscosity of about 5000-60,000 cps and a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g,
- (ii) a filler,
- (iii) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components,
- (iv) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (v) a hydrogen gas diminisher, and
- (c) storing said first component and said second component until ready for use.
- 27. The method of claim 26, said component (b) further including an emulsifying plasticizer for said catalyst component and hydrogen scavenging finely divided Pt metal.
- 28. A method of taking an impression of a dentition, comprising:
- (i) mixing components (a) and (b) of claim 26;
- (ii) placing said mixture into contact with said dentition;
- (iii) allowing said mixture to polymerize to dimensional stability; and
- (iv) removing said impression from said dentition.
- 29. A dental impression having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa) and a contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes formed from a polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time at least 2 minutes, comprising:
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g;
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher, composition, wherein said composition surface contact angle with water is less than 50.degree. after three minutes.
- 30. The composition of claim 29 wherein the viscosity of the QM dispersion and filler are-selected to achieve a desired overall composition viscosity.
- 31. The composition of claim 30 wherein the dispersion of (a) and (b) has a viscosity of about 5,000-60,000 cps.
- 32. The composition of claim 31 wherein said QM resin has a viscosity of about 5,000-7,000 cps.
- 33. The composition of claim 29 wherein said QM resin comprises a polyorganosiloxane comprising units of SiO.sub.4/2 and up to four units of R.sup.1 R.sup.2.sub.2 SiO.sub.1/2 wherein
- R.sup.1 is unsaturated and
- R.sup.2 is alkyl or aryl.
- 34. The composition of claim 29, wherein said QM resin comprises the formula: ##STR4##
- 35. The composition of claim 29 further comprising a finely divided platinum metal, sufficient to scavenge excess hydrogen gas generated during polymerization of said composition.
- 36. The composition of claim 29 wherein said retarder component is a low molecular weight, vinyl functional fluid that is a linear or cyclic polysiloxane, in an amount of at least about 0.030 weight percent of said composition.
- 37. The composition of claim 29 wherein said retarder component comprises: a fluid 1,3-divinyl, dimethyldisiloxane, in an amount of about 0.030 to 0.12 weight percent of said composition.
- 38. The composition of claim 29 wherein said filler comprises about 15 to about 45 weight percent of said composition.
- 39. The composition of claim 29 wherein said filler comprises crystalline silicone dioxide, amorphous silicone dioxide and silanated fumed silicone dioxide.
- 40. The composition of claim 29 wherein said filler comprises cristobalite having about 4-6.mu. particle diameter, diatomaceous earth having about 4-7.mu. particle diameter and silanated fumed silica having about 160-240 m.sup.2 /g.
- 41. The composition of claim 39 wherein said surfactant comprises an HLB of about 8-11 and a pH of about 6-8.
- 42. The composition of claim 29 wherein said surfactant is a nonionic surfactant.
- 43. The composition of claim 29 wherein said surfactant is a nonylphenoxypoly(ethylenoxy)ethanol having an HLB of about 10.8.
- 44. The polyorganosiloxane composition of claim 29 wherein said composition is in the form of two components, one component including a catalyst for polymerization, wherein said QM resin dispersion comprises a viscosity of about 5000 to about 60,000 cps and said composition further comprises an emulsifying plasticizer for said catalyst component, wherein said components have compatible viscosities for mixing.
- 45. The composition of claim 44 wherein said emulsifying plasticizer imparts desired handling and flow properties to said catalyst complex to match those of the second component, wherein a suitable composition for taking a dental impression is formed.
- 46. The composition of claim 44 wherein said plasticizer comprises about 0.5 to 2.0 weight percent of said catalyst component and is an alkylphthalate.
- 47. The composition of claim 44 wherein said plasticizer is octyl benzyl phthalate.
- 48. The composition of claim 46 having, after polymerization through chemical bonding, a tear strength of about 270-300 psi (1.86-2.07 MPa) and a contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes.
- 49. The polymerizable polyorganosiloxane composition of claim 29 wherein said composition is in the form of two components including a base component and a catalyst component wherein said base component comprises said surfactants that imparts wettability to said composition and comprises about 5-8 weight percent of said base component.
- 50. The composition of claim 39 wherein said crystalline silicone dioxide comprises from about 14 to about 24 weight percent of said filler, said amorphous silicone dioxide comprises from about 3 to about 6 weight percent of said filler and said silanated fumed silicone dioxide comprises from about 4 to about 8 weight percent of said filler.
- 51. The composition of claim 40 wherein said crystobalite comprises about 19 weight percent of said filler, said diatomaceous earth comprises about 6 weight percent of said filler, and said fumed silica comprises about 4 weight percent of said filler.
- 52. A polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time at least 2 minutes and forming a dental impression having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa) and a contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes, comprising:
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g;
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition, and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher,
- the dispersion of (a) and (b) has a viscosity of about 5,000-60,000 cps,
- said QM resin comprising a first dispersion component having a viscosity of about 5,000-7,000 cps; and a second dispersion component having a viscosity of about 45,000-60,000 cps.
- 53. A polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time at least 2 minutes and forming a dental impression having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa) and a contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes, comprising:
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g;
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition; and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher,
- said filler comprising about 15 to about 45 weight percent of said composition,
- said filler comprising crystalline silicone dioxide, amorphous silicone dioxide and silanated fumed silicone dioxide.
- 54. A polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time at least 2 minutes and forming a dental impression having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa) and a contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes, comprising:
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g;
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition, and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher,
- said filler comprising about 15 to about 45 weight percent of said composition,
- said filler comprising cristobalite having about 4-6.mu. particle diameter, diatomaceous earth having about 4-7.mu. particle diameter and silanated fumed silica having about 160-240 m.sup.2 /g.
- 55. A method to making a dental impression, in a wet environment, of oral hard and soft tissues, comprising:
- forming a composition having a work time of at least 2 minutes by mixing
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a viscosity of about 5000-60,000 cps and a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g;
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane having a viscosity of about 35-45 cps for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition, wherein said composition surface contact angle with water is less than 50.degree. after three minutes; and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher,
- placing said mixture into contact with said tissues;
- allowing said mixture to harden into a material having said impression; and
- removing said impression from said tissues, said material having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa),
- said Qm resin-containing dispersion, comprising: a first dispersion component having a viscosity of about 5,000-7,000 cps; and a second dispersion component having a viscosity of about 45,000-60,000 cps, said QM resin comprising about 20-25 weight percent of said dispersions.
- 56. A dental impression having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa) and a contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes formed from a polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time at least 2 minutes, comprising:
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g;
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition; and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher,
- wherein said composition surface contact angle with water is less than 50.degree. after three minutes,
- the viscosity of the QM dispersion and filler are selected to achieve a desired overall composition viscosity,
- the dispersion of (a) and (b) has a viscosity of about 5,000-60,000 cps,
- said QM resin comprising: a first dispersion component having a viscosity of about 5,000-7,000 cps; and a second dispersion component having a viscosity of about 45,000-60,000 cps.
- 57. A dental impression having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa) and a surface contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes formed from a polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time at least 2 minutes, comprising:
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g;
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition; and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher,
- said filler comprising crystalline silicone dioxide, amorphous silicone dioxide and silanated fumed silicone dioxide.
- 58. A dental impression having a tear strength of at least 200 psi (1.37 MPa) and a surface contact angle with water of less than about 50.degree. at three minutes formed from a polyorganosiloxane composition having a work time at least 2 minutes, comprising:
- (a) a QM resin, containing vinyl groups;
- (b) a linear vinyl terminated polydimethyl-siloxane fluid, forming with said QM resin a dispersion having a vinyl content of about 0.16 to 0.24 m-mole/g;
- (c) an organohydrogen polysiloxane for cross-linking said vinyl groups;
- (d) an organoplatinum catalyst complex for accelerating polymerization of said components;
- (e) a retarder component in sufficient amount for temporarily delaying the onset of said polymerization;
- (f) a filler;
- (g) a surfactant that imparts wettability to said composition; and
- (h) hydrogen gas diminisher,
- said filler comprising crystalline silicone dioxide, amorphous silicone dioxide and silanated fumed silicone dioxide,
- said surfactant comprising an HLB of about 8-11 and a pH of about 6-8,
- said surfactant being a nonionic surfactant.
