Claims
- 1. A portable apparatus configured to be worn by a person, comprising:an enclosure; an air sampling system associated with the enclosure that samples air from a breathing zone of a person wearing the portable apparatus, comprising: a filter device, comprising: a housing including an air inlet in communication with the breathing zone, and an air outlet; and a filter element disposed within the housing that is configured to retain particles entrained within air flowing therethrough; a pump in fluid communication with the filter device air outlet, wherein the pump is configured to draw a predetermined volume of air into the filter device and through the filter element; and a system that intermittently activates the pump to draw the predetermined volume of air through the filter element at predetermined intervals; a physical activity monitor associated with the enclosure that monitors physical activity of the person wearing the portable apparatus, wherein the physical activity monitor does not utilize any part of the air sampling system to monitor physical activity of the person wearing the portable apparatus; and a data logger associated with the enclosure and in communication with the physical activity monitor.
- 2. The portable apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the physical activity monitor is selected from the group consisting of accelerometer chips, motion switches, and light sensors.
- 3. The portable apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the system that intermittently activates the pump comprises:an electrical motor; a power supply that supplies electrical power to the electrical motor; and a timing circuit that interrupts the supply of electrical power to the electrical motor at the predetermined intervals.
- 4. The portable apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a system that monitors performance of the air sampling system.
- 5. The portable apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the system that monitors performance of the air sampling system comprises:means for continuously measuring pressure drop across the filter; and means for recording measured pressure drop data within the data logger.
- 6. The portable apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the system that monitors performance of the air sampling system comprises:means for continuously measuring temperature of air drawn into the filter device; and means for recording air temperature data within the data logger.
- 7. The portable apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the system that intermittently activates the pump comprises an electrical motor, a power supply that supplies electrical power to the electrical motor, and a timing circuit that interrupts the supply of electrical power to the electrical motor at the predetermined intervals, and wherein the system that monitors performance of the air sampling system comprises means for continuously measuring voltage across the power supply, and means for recording power supply voltage data within the data logger.
- 8. A method of monitoring air, comprising the following steps performed by a portable apparatus configured to be worn by a person:sampling air from a breathing zone of a person via an air sampling system, comprising intermittently sampling air that is drawn through a filter via a pump, while monitoring pressure drop across the filter; monitoring physical activity of the person during the air sampling step via a physical activity monitoring system, wherein the physical activity monitor does not utilize any part of the air sampling system to monitor physical activity of the person wearing the portable apparatus; and recording information associated with physical activity of the person.
- 9. The method according to claim 8, further comprising the step of monitoring airborne contaminants.
- 10. The method according to claim 8, further comprising the step of transmitting at least one of sampled air data and physical activity data to a remotely located communications device via the portable apparatus.
- 11. The method according to claim 8, further comprising the step of receiving data from a remotely located communications device via the portable apparatus.
- 12. The method according to claim 8, wherein the physical activity monitor is selected from the group consisting of accelerometer chips, motion switches, and light sensors.
- 13. A method of monitoring air, comprising the following steps performed by a portable apparatus configured to be worn by a person:sampling air from a breathing zone of a person via an air sampling system, comprising intermittently sampling air that is drawn through a filter via a pump, while measuring temperature of air drawn through the filter; monitoring physical activity of the person during the air sampling step via a physical activity monitoring system, wherein the physical activity monitor does not utilize any part of the air sampling system to monitor physical activity of the person wearing the portable apparatus; and recording information associated with physical activity of the person.
- 14. The method according to claim 13, further comprising the step of monitoring airborne contaminants.
- 15. The method according to claim 13, further comprising the step of transmitting at least one of sampled air data and physical activity data to a remotely located communications device via the portable apparatus.
- 16. The method according to claim 13, further comprising the step of receiving data from a remotely located communications device via the portable apparatus.
- 17. The method according to claim 13, wherein the physical activity monitor is selected from the group consisting of accelerometer chips, motion switches, and light sensors.
- 18. A portable apparatus configured to be worn by a person, comprising:an enclosure; an air sampling system associated with the enclosure that samples air from a breathing zone of a person wearing the portable apparatus; a physical activity monitor associated with the enclosure that monitors physical activity of the person wearing the portable apparatus, wherein the physical activity monitor does not utilize any part of the air sampling system to monitor physical activity of the person wearing the portable apparatus; a data logger associated with the enclosure and in communication with the physical activity monitor; and a system that monitors performance of the air sampling system, comprising: means for continuously measuring pressure drop across the filter; and means for recording measured pressure drop data within the data logger.
- 19. The portable apparatus according to claim 18, wherein the physical activity monitor is selected from the group consisting of accelerometer chips, motion switches, and light sensors.
- 20. The portable apparatus according to claim 18, wherein the air sampling system comprises:a filter device, comprising: a housing including an air inlet in communication with the breathing zone, and an air outlet; and a filter element disposed within the housing that is configured to retain particles entrained within air flowing therethrough; a pump in fluid communication with the filter device air outlet, wherein the pump is configured to draw a predetermined volume of air into the filter device and through the filter element; and a system that intermittently activates the pump to draw the predetermined volume of air through the filter element at predetermined intervals.
- 21. The portable apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the system that intermittently activates the pump comprises:an electrical motor; a power supply that supplies electrical power to the electrical motor; and a timing circuit that interrupts the supply of electrical power to the electrical motor at the predetermined intervals.
- 22. The portable apparatus according to claim 21, wherein the system that monitors performance of the air sampling system comprises:means for continuously measuring voltage across the power supply; and means for recording power supply voltage data within the data logger.
- 23. A portable apparatus configured to be worn by a person, comprising:an enclosure; an air sampling system associated with the enclosure that samples air from a breathing zone of a person wearing the portable apparatus; a physical activity monitor associated with the enclosure that monitors physical activity of the person wearing the portable apparatus, wherein the physical activity monitor does not utilize any part of the air sampling system to monitor physical activity of the person wearing the portable apparatus; and a data logger associated with the enclosure and in communication with the physical activity monitor; and a system that monitors performance of the air sampling system, comprising: means for continuously measuring temperature of air drawn into the filter device; and means for recording air temperature data within the data logger.
- 24. The portable apparatus according to claim 23, wherein the physical activity monitor is selected from the group consisting of accelerometer chips, motion switches, and light sensors.
- 25. The portable apparatus according to claim 23, wherein the air sampling system comprises:a filter device, comprising: a housing including an air inlet in communication with the breathing zone, and an air outlet; and a filter element disposed within the housing that is configured to retain particles entrained within air flowing therethrough; a pump in fluid communication with the filter device air outlet, wherein the pump is configured to draw a predetermined volume of air into the filter device and through the filter element; and a system that intermittently activates the pump to draw the predetermined volume of air through the filter element at predetermined intervals.
- 26. The portable apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the system that intermittently activates the pump comprises:an electrical motor; a power supply that supplies electrical power to the electrical motor; and a timing circuit that interrupts the supply of electrical power to the electrical motor at the predetermined intervals.
- 27. The portable apparatus according to claim 26, wherein the system that monitors performance of the air sampling system further comprises:means for continuously measuring voltage across the power supply; and means for recording power supply voltage data within the data logger.
