Abstract
A portable, cushioned baby mat that provides a clean and supportive surface during nap-time, play-time, tummy-time or during diaper changes. The design focuses on ease of movability of the mat from room to room through a multifunctional form. The mat is comprised of a removable, washable cover with handles and pocket, and an interior cushion.
Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates generally to baby mats, baby cushions, baby mattresses, and pocketed diaper bags, and more particularly to an integrated system that fulfills the above functions in a single, portable device.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF INVENTION

The portable baby mat is comprised of a removable exterior fabric cover and interior foam cushion. It is foldable by design construction, and includes handles sewn into the fabric cover for ease of transportation. There is a pocket sewn into the fabric cover for storage of items during transportation.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWING

FIG. 1 is a plan view, showing the portable baby mat in its open, resting position.

FIG. 2 is an elevation view, showing the portable baby mat in its folded, traveling position.

FIG. 3 is an elevation view, showing the bottom surface of the baby mat when in its folded traveling position. This view shows the location of the zippers on the exterior cover, which allows for removal of the cover for washing.

FIG. 4 is a plan view, showing the interior foam cushions.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The prototype for the portable cushioned baby mat is named ‘Hugomat’ after my son, Hugo. Before Hugo was 3 months old, I carried him for most of the day in a wrap. Suddenly, he wanted to get out, lie on his tummy, roll, sit up, and play. There did not exist a product that fulfilled our needs: a mat that I could scoop up in one arm while I held him in the other, and bring from room to room. A mat that was soft and cushioned, and just the right size to be functional and portable. I created the prototype to be a hybrid, between a mattress, a rug and a bag, specifically designed to support a baby and the needs of their non-stationary parent.

The prototype of the portable cushioned baby mat is circular, measuring 33 inches in diameter and l inch in thickness. It is comprised of a removable, machine-washable cotton cover, and 2 natural latex foam cushions. The cushions can be removed by zippers on the bottom of the exterior cover. Handles are sewn into the exterior cover so that the user can easily fold the mat in half and carry it from room to room. There is a pocket sewn into the bottom of the exterior cover, allowing the user to store small baby items such as a diaper, a few wipes, or a pacifier while carrying the mat from place to place.

The prototype cover is constructed from the following pieces: top surface piece, bottom surface pieces, perimeter pieces, cushioned fabric-wrapped handles, clasp closure to secure handles together, pocket piece, zippers between bottom surface piece and perimeter pieces.

The prototype cushion is constructed of I inch thick natural latex foam cut into 2 half circles measuring 33 inches in diameter.

Claims
  • 1. A baby mat comprised of 2 entities of natural (non-synthetic material); an exterior removable fabric cover & interior foam cushion, whereby together, in its open resting position on the ground, exposes a top surface in which to lay a baby for nap time, play time, tummy time, or changing a soiled diaper, whereby in its folded traveling position carried by handles, exposes a bottom surface and pocket which allows protection from the elements and storage of items during transport.
  • 2. A baby mat according to claim 1, wherein the exterior removable cover is constructed from a top fabric piece, bottom fabric pieces, perimeter fabric pieces, and notions in support of removability and portability, i.e. zippers, clasps and handles.
  • 8. A baby mat according to claim 1, that has a generally circular configuration in plan view.
