Some embodiments of the invention are herein described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings. With specific reference now to the drawings in detail, it is stressed that the particulars shown are by way of example and for purposes of illustrative discussion of embodiments of the invention. In this regard, the description taken with the drawings makes apparent to those skilled in the art how embodiments of the invention may be practiced.
In the drawings:
The present invention, in some embodiments thereof, relates to an emergency alert device and, more particularly, but not exclusively, to a portable dual-communication emergency alert device.
According to some embodiments of the present invention, there is provided a device that communicates an alert in emergency situations, having at least two transmitters, each for communicating the alert via a different relay device.
One technical problem with existing portable emergency alert devices relates to their connectivity. A connection to an emergency center, whether direct or indirect, has to be ensured at all times. This is more critical in the case of emergency alert devices relative or other communication devices. Some existing emergency alert devices transmit the alert to a hub or other gateway via radio communication, which in turn communicates with an emergency center. A significant drawback of this method is that it is available only when the person is at home and within the reception range of the hub. Other existing emergency alert devices transmit the alert via short range wireless communication such as Bluetooth® to a mobile phone, which in turn may communicate with an emergency center or another entity such as a relative, through cellular network. A frequent problem with this solution is that a person does not always carry the mobile phone, especially when at home, and may not be close enough for Bluetooth® communication to be enabled.
To solve this problem, some existing portable emergency alert devices transmit the alert directly via cellular network (for example a mobile phone of the user having installed thereon a corresponding application). However, a significant drawback of this method is that the battery life expectancy of the device is a few days at most, after which the device needs recharging. It is undesired that a device used by a person, in particular elderly person, has to be recharged or have its battery replaced often.
According to some embodiments of the present invention, there is provided a portable emergency alert device, which may be constantly carried by a user, such as a bracelet, and is able to communicate via different relay devices. Optionally, one of these relay devices is stationary (such as a hub located for example at the home of the user) and one is mobile (such as a mobile phone). This way, the portable emergency alert device is in range of at least one of the relay devices both at home and outside, which ensures connectivity both inside the house and outside (a person usually carries his mobile phone close to his body when outside), and provides better reliability for transmitting the alert. Also, the portable emergency alert device may not have high consumption of energy when the relay devices are relatively close to the portable emergency alert device.
Before explaining at least one embodiment of the invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily limited in its application to the details of construction and the arrangement of the components and/or methods set forth in the following description and/or illustrated in the drawings and/or the Examples. The invention is capable of other embodiments or of being practiced or carried out in various ways.
The present invention may be a system, a method, and/or a computer program product. The computer program product may include a computer readable storage medium (or media) having computer readable program instructions thereon for causing a processor to carry out aspects of the present invention.
The computer readable storage medium can be a tangible device that can retain and store instructions for use by an instruction execution device. The computer readable storage medium may be, for example, but is not limited to, an electronic storage device, a magnetic storage device, an optical storage device, an electromagnetic storage device, a semiconductor storage device, or any suitable combination of the foregoing. A non-exhaustive list of more specific examples of the computer readable storage medium includes the following: a portable computer diskette, a hard disk, a random access memory (RAM), a read-only memory (ROM), an erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM or Flash memory), a static random access memory (SRAM), a portable compact disc read-only memory (CD-ROM), a digital versatile disk (DVD), a memory stick, a floppy disk, a mechanically encoded device such as punch-cards or raised structures in a groove having instructions recorded thereon, and any suitable combination of the foregoing. A computer readable storage medium, as used herein, is not to be construed as being transitory signals per se, such as radio waves or other freely propagating electromagnetic waves, electromagnetic waves propagating through a waveguide or other transmission media (e.g., light pulses passing through a fiber-optic cable), or electrical signals transmitted through a wire.
Computer readable program instructions described herein can be downloaded to respective computing/processing devices from a computer readable storage medium or to an external computer or external storage device via a network, for example, the Internet, a local area network, a wide area network and/or a wireless network. The network may comprise copper transmission cables, optical transmission fibers, wireless transmission, routers, firewalls, switches, gateway computers and/or edge servers. A network adapter card or network interface in each computing/processing device receives computer readable program instructions from the network and forwards the computer readable program instructions for storage in a computer readable storage medium within the respective computing/processing device.
Computer readable program instructions for carrying out operations of the present invention may be assembler instructions, instruction-set-architecture (ISA) instructions, machine instructions, machine dependent instructions, microcode, firmware instructions, state-setting data, or either source code or object code written in any combination of one or more programming languages, including an object oriented programming language such as Smalltalk, C++ or the like, and conventional procedural programming languages, such as the “C” programming language or similar programming languages. The computer readable program instructions may execute entirely on the user's computer, partly on the user's computer, as a stand-alone software package, partly on the user's computer and partly on a remote computer or entirely on the remote computer or server. In the latter scenario, the remote computer may be connected to the user's computer through any type of network, including a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN), or the connection may be made to an external computer (for example, through the Internet using an Internet Service Provider). In some embodiments, electronic circuitry including, for example, programmable logic circuitry, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA), or programmable logic arrays (PLA) may execute the computer readable program instructions by utilizing state information of the computer readable program instructions to personalize the electronic circuitry, in order to perform aspects of the present invention.
Aspects of the present invention are described herein with reference to flowchart illustrations and/or block diagrams of methods, apparatus (systems), and computer program products according to embodiments of the invention. It will be understood that each block of the flowchart illustrations and/or block diagrams, and combinations of blocks in the flowchart illustrations and/or block diagrams, can be implemented by computer readable program instructions.
These computer readable program instructions may be provided to a processor of a general purpose computer, special purpose computer, or other programmable data processing apparatus to produce a machine, such that the instructions, which execute via the processor of the computer or other programmable data processing apparatus, create means for implementing the functions/acts specified in the flowchart and/or block diagram block or blocks. These computer readable program instructions may also be stored in a computer readable storage medium that can direct a computer, a programmable data processing apparatus, and/or other devices to function in a particular manner, such that the computer readable storage medium having instructions stored therein comprises an article of manufacture including instructions which implement aspects of the function/act specified in the flowchart and/or block diagram block or blocks.
The computer readable program instructions may also be loaded onto a computer, other programmable data processing apparatus, or other device to cause a series of operational steps to be performed on the computer, other programmable apparatus or other device to produce a computer implemented process, such that the instructions which execute on the computer, other programmable apparatus, or other device implement the functions/acts specified in the flowchart and/or block diagram block or blocks.
The flowchart and block diagrams in the Figures illustrate the architecture, functionality, and operation of possible implementations of systems, methods and computer program products according to various embodiments of the present invention. In this regard, each block in the flowchart or block diagrams may represent a module, segment, or portion of instructions, which comprises one or more executable instructions for implementing the specified logical function(s). In some alternative implementations, the functions noted in the block may occur out of the order noted in the figures. For example, two blocks shown in succession may, in fact, be executed substantially concurrently, or the blocks may sometimes be executed in the reverse order, depending upon the functionality involved. It will also be noted that each block of the block diagrams and/or flowchart illustration, and combinations of blocks in the block diagrams and/or flowchart illustration, can be implemented by special purpose hardware-based systems that perform the specified functions or acts or carry out combinations of special purpose hardware and computer instructions.
Referring now to the drawings,
A portable emergency alert device 100 includes at least two transmitters, each transmits an alert to one of at least two relay devices. Optionally, the transmitters and the relay devices are of different types and/or use different communication methods and/or protocols, to increase the chances of successful transmission. Optionally, the transmitters and the relay devices use different frequencies and/or different amplitudes of signals. Any of the relay devices may be any device that includes a receiver to receive the transmitted alert from at least one of the transmitters and is able to transmit the alert to an emergency center. Any of the relay devices may include one or more components or separate devices.
For example, portable emergency alert device 100 includes radio transmitter 101 which transmits an alert to a radio hub 110 which is used as a stationary relay device; and a Bluetooth® transmitter 102 which transmits an alert to a mobile phone 120 which is used as a mobile relay device. Radio hub 110 may be a stationary device or multiple connected devices, and may also be any kind of radio gateway. Mobile phone 120 may be any kind of smart mobile device in which Bluetooth® communication is enabled, and may also be any other Bluetooth® device or a combination of devices.
Other types of technologies of optional transmitters and/or relay devices may include WiFi, near-field communication (NFC), and/or any other technology. These may be chosen based on performance, price and/or other considerations. The transmitters may use any communication protocol, including for example, internet protocols such as transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP) and/or user datagram protocol (UDP), any Bluetooth® protocol, and/or any other protocol according to the transmission type.
Portable emergency alert device 100 may be any kind of mobile device, optionally designed to be carried by the user at all times. For example, portable emergency alert device 100 may be (or included in) a wearable device such as a bracelet, a pendant, Google glass, a smart watch an electronic sticker or the like.
First, as shown at 201, an indication of an emergency situation is received by sensor 103. The indication may be received from a user by sensor 103, to indicate stress, panic or other need for help. This may be done, for example, for example by pressing a physical button included in sensor 103, touching a touch screen included in sensor 103 in a predetermined area, making sounds received by a voice sensor and analyzed by an analysis component included in sensor 103, and/or by any other input method. The indication may also be received from sensor element(s) included in sensor 103, for example sensors monitoring health parameters of the user's body (such as blood pressure, pulse, sugar levels and/or any other parameter) or accelerometers for identifying a sudden fall.
Then, as shown at 202, the indication of an emergency situation is processed by a processor 104 to instruct transmission of an alert by at least one of radio transmitter 101 and Bluetooth® transmitter 102 via a corresponding relay device. Optionally, one of radio transmitter 101 or Bluetooth® transmitter 102 is selected to transmit the alert, as part of the processing.
Optionally, a transmitter is selected based on proximity to the corresponding relay device. For example, when the user is at home and within range of radio hub 110, radio transmitter 101 transmits an alert to radio hub 110. For another example, when the user is outside and carrying mobile phone 120, Bluetooth® transmitter 102 transmits an alert to mobile phone 120. The proximity and/or range of portable emergency alert device 100 to the relay device may be detected, for example, by a receiver which receives signals from the relay device. The receiver may be part of the corresponding transmitter or located separately within portable emergency alert device 100. Optionally, the proximity to radio hub 110 is determined by monitoring the location of the user (such as at home or outside), for example using a global positioning system (GPS) such as included in mobile phone 120.
Optionally, a transmitter is selected based on the proper operation of transmitters 101 and 102 or relay devices 110 and 120. For example, when a malfunction is detected in radio transmitter 101, Bluetooth® transmitter 102 transmits an alert to mobile phone 120. For another example, when mobile phone 120 has low battery and may shut down, radio transmitter 101 transmits an alert to radio hub 110.
Optionally, a transmitter is selected based on the indication received by sensor 103 and/or the type of emergency that is concluded from the indication by processor 104. For example, in the absence of location information, a transmitter may be selected according the indicated type of fall the user has suffered, which may indicate whether the user is currently at home or outdoors.
Alternatively, both of transmitters 101 and 102 are selected to transmit the alert, simultaneously or sequentially.
Then, as shown at 203, the alert is transmitted from the selected transmitter (radio transmitter 101 or Bluetooth® transmitter 102) to the corresponding relay device (radio hub 110 or mobile phone 120 respectively).
Then, as shown at 204, the alert is transmitted from the corresponding relay device (radio hub 110 or mobile phone 120) to an emergency center 130. This may be done via any kind of communication. For example, radio hub 110 may communicate with emergency center 130 via public switched telephone network (PSTN), local area network (LAN), optic fibers communication, cellular communication, wireless communication such as WiFi and/or any other communication method. For another example, mobile phone 120 may communicate with emergency center 130 via cellular communication, wireless communication such as WiFi and/or any other communication method.
Emergency center 130 may be, for example, a communication center of a medical facility, a control center, or an emergency service. Emergency center 130 may also include a communication device of a friend, family member of a doctor of the user who may help in case of emergency.
Optionally, as shown at 205, an alert is also transmitted from the other transmitter to a corresponding relay device, and then transmitted from the corresponding relay device to emergency center 130, as shown at 206. Optionally, this is done simultaneously, automatically after or concurrently with the alert being transmitted from the selected transmitter (as shown at 203 and 204), to further increase the reliability of transmitting the alert to emergency center 130. Optionally, this is done only when an indication of failure to transmit the alert from the selected transmitter or the corresponding selected relay device is detected. A failure may be detected, for example, by not receiving acknowledgement or confirmation from the relay device and/or from emergency center 130, for example within a predetermined time frame, that the alert was successfully received by relay the device and/or emergency center 130 respectively, for example by a receiver as described above.
Optionally, portable emergency alert device 100 includes a power source such as battery 140, which provides energy for radio transmitter 101 and Bluetooth® transmitter 102. Optionally, battery 140 provides energy, without replacement or recharging, for at least one year.
