Claims
- 1. In a centrifugal pump having a pump shaft and an impeller mounted for rotation on said pump shaft within a volute chamber, said pump having a pump body split into two separable pieces defining said volute chamber and providing a pump inlet passage and a pump discharge passage, said pump body including a first body portion and a second body portion, the improvement comprising a ball valve for controlling flow through said discharge passage, the said first body portion forming one piece of said two piece pump body and being constructed to define a discharge passage having a housing for receiving and supporting said ball valve therein, and said second body portion forming the other piece of said two piece pump body and being constructed to provide a cover portion closing said ball valve housing, said first and second body portions being secured together at mating faces extending around said impeller.
- 2. A combination according to claim 1 wherein said pump body is split in a plane extending down the center of said impeller perpendicular to the pump shaft.
- 3. A combination according to claim 1 including a discharge fitting providing a discharge conduit in communication with said pump discharge passage, said ball valve including a ball valve member for controlling flow through said discharge conduit, said ball valve member having a ball portion cooperating with a valve seat mounted at the upstream end of said fitting.
- 4. A combination according to claim 3 wherein said ball valve member is of a one-piece construction including a first stem portion extending upwardly therefrom and a second stem portion extending downwardly therefrom, said first pump body portion being adapted to support the first stem portion in a vertically extending position, said second pump body portion being adapted to support the second stem portion in a vertically extending position.
- 5. A combination according to claim 3 wherein said valve seat comprises a compressible O-ring enclosing the discharge passage and being mounted on the upstream end of said discharge fitting and means for variably preloading the O-ring against said ball portion by adjusting the position of said fitting relative to the position of said ball portion.
- 6. A combination according to claim 3 wherein said valve seat comprises a compressible O-ring enclosing the discharge passage and being mounted on the upstream end of said discharge fitting and
- means for variably preloading the O-ring against said ball portion including shim means located between said fitting and said lower pump body for varying the position in which said fitting is mounted on said lower pump body to thereby adjust the position of said O-ring relative to said ball portion.
