Claims
- 1. A portable printer comprising:
- a printing unit having a paper entrance slot, said printing unit being operable either in a first mode in which it is connected to an automatic sheet feeder or in a second mode in which it is separated from said sheet feeder and a user hand feeds paper to the printer;
- an automatic sheet feeder connectable to said printing unit for feeding print media to said entrance slot during operation in said first mode;
- means for rotating said printing unit and said sheet feeder about a substantially common axis for configuring said printer into different operating positions when said printer is in said first mode; and
- means for separating said printing unit from said frame for operating the printing unit in said second mode.
- 2. The portable printer of claim 1 wherein said printer further comprises means for fixing said sheet feeder and said printing unit relative to one another.
- 3. The portable printer of claim 2 wherein said means for fixing said sheet feeder and said printing unit relative to one another comprises means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against relative rotation.
- 4. The portable printer of claim 1 wherein said means for rotating said printing unit and said sheet feeder about a substantially common axis for configuring said printer into said different operating positions comprises:
- a frame; and
- means for pivotally connecting said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said frame.
- 5. The portable printer of claim 4 wherein said means for pivotally connecting said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said frame comprises:
- an elongate member mounted on said frame for rotation about a longitudinal axis thereof; and
- means for receiving said printing unit in said elongate member.
- 6. A portable printer comprising:
- a printing unit having a paper entrance slot;
- an automatic sheet feeder connectable to said printer unit for feeding print media thereto;
- a frame;
- means for pivotally connecting said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said frame including an elongated cylindrical member mounted on said frame for rotation about a longitudinal axis thereof;
- said elongated cylindrical member having a slot along one side thereof for receiving and holding said printing unit.
- 7. The portable printer of claim 6 wherein said printer further includes means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against relative rotation.
- 8. The portable printer of claim 7 wherein said means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against relative rotation comprises:
- a slot formed in said cylindrical member; and
- a locking member mounted on said sheet feeder and insertable into said slot for preventing such relative rotation.
- 9. The portable printer of claim 5 wherein said printer further includes means for fixing said elongate member against rotation at a selected position.
- 10. A portable printer comprising:
- a printing unit having a paper entrance slot;
- an automatic sheet feeder connectable to said printing unit for feeding print media thereto;
- a frame;
- an elongate member mounted on said frame for rotation about a longitudinal axis thereof for configuring said printer into different operating modes; and
- means for attaching said printing unit to said elongate member;
- a groove formed on said elongate member; and
- locking means mounted on said frame, said locking means cooperating with said groove for fixing said elongate member against rotation at a selected position.
- 11. The portable printer of claim 1 wherein said printer further comprises means for fixing said sheet feeder and said printing unit at selected positions about said axis.
- 12. The portable printer of claim 11 wherein said printer further comprises means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against relative rotation.
- 13. The portable printer of claim 1 wherein said printing unit has an automatic printing mode in which said sheet feeder feeds print media into said entrance slot when said sheet feeder is connected to said printing unit and wherein said printer further includes a base upon which said printing unit and said sheet feeder are mounted when said printing unit is operating in said mode.
- 14. The portable printer of claim 13 wherein said printer further comprises means for disposing said printing unit and said sheet feeder relative to one another to expose said entrance slot while said printing unit and said sheet feeder remain mounted on said base, said exposed slot permitting operation of said printing unit in a manual printing mode in which an operator hand feeds print media into said entrance slot.
- 15. The portable printer of claim 1 wherein said printer further includes:
- a base; and
- means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said base for transporting or storing said printer.
- 16. The portable printer of claim 15 wherein said printer further includes means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against relative rotation.
- 17. The portable printer of claim 16 wherein said means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said base comprises means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder at 180 degrees relative to one another.
- 18. The portable printer of claim 15 wherein said means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said base for transporting or storing said printer comprises a lock disposed between said sheet feeder and said base for selectively locking said sheet feeder to said base.
- 19. The portable printer of claim 18 wherein said means for rotating said printing unit and said sheet feeder about a substantially common axis for configuring said printer into different operating modes comprises:
- a frame mounted on said base; and
- means for pivotally connecting said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said frame.
- 20. The portable printer of claim 19 wherein said means for pivotally connecting said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said frame comprises:
- an elongate member mounted on said frame for rotation about a longitudinal axis thereof; and
- means for receiving said printing unit in said elongate member.
- 21. A portable printer comprising:
- a printing unit having a paper entrance slot;
- an automatic sheet feeder connectable to said printing unit for feeding print media to said entrance slot during different operating modes;
- a base;
- a frame mounted on said base;
- a cylindrical elongate member mounted on said frame for rotation about a longitudinal axis thereof for configuring said printer into said different operating modes, said cylindrical elongate member having a slot along one side thereof for receiving and holding said printing unit; and
- a lock disposed between said sheet feeder and said base for selectively locking said sheet feeder to said base for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said base for transporting or storing said printer.
- 22. The portable printer of claim 21 wherein said means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said base for transporting or storing said printer further comprises means for engaging said printing unit to prevent it from being withdrawn from said cylindrical member.
- 23. The portable printer of claim 22 wherein said means for engaging said printing unit comprises a locking unit disposed between said printing unit and said base, said locking unit so engaging said printing unit when said printing unit is rotated against said base.
- 24. The portable printer of claim 1 wherein said sheet feeder further includes an alignment guide through which an operator hand feeds print media into said entrance slot in a manual printing mode.
- 25. A portable printer comprising:
- a substantially planar base:
- a frame mounted on said base;
- a printing unit pivotally mounted on said frame, said printing unit being operable in a first mode in which it is connected to an automatic sheet feeder or in a second mode in which it is separated from said frame and said sheet feeder and a user hand feeds print media to the printer;
- an automatic sheet feeder connectable to said printing unit for feeding print media thereto when said printing unit is operating in said first mode, said sheet feeder being pivotally mounted on said frame; and
- means for separating said printing unit from said frame for operating the printing unit in said second mode.
- 26. The printer of claim 25 wherein said printing unit and said sheet feeder are pivotally mounted on said frame for rotation about a substantially common axis wherein said sheet feeder remains operatively connected to said printing unit.
- 27. The printer of claim 26 wherein said printer further includes means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder in preselected relative angular positions.
- 28. The printer of claim 27 wherein said means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder in preselected relative angular positions includes means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder at substantially 90 degrees relative to one another.
- 29. The printer of claim 28 wherein said printer includes means for engaging said sheet feeder substantially against said base in an operating position in which said printing unit and said sheet feeder are locked at substantially 90 degrees relative to one another with said printer being substantially upright relative to said base.
- 30. The printer of claim 28 wherein said printer includes means for disposing said sheet feeder and said printing unit at substantially 45 degrees relative to said base in an operating mode in which said printing unit and said sheet feeder are locked at substantially 90 degrees relative to one another.
- 31. The portable printer of claim 27 wherein said printing unit has a paper entrance slot and an automatic printing mode in which said sheet feeder abuts against said entrance slot for feeding print media to said printing unit when said sheet feeder and said printing unit assume a preselected angular position relative to one another.
- 32. The portable printer of claim 31 wherein said printer further comprises means for rotating said printing unit and said sheet feeder relative to one another to expose said entrance slot, said exposed slot permitting operation of said printing unit in a manual printing mode in which an operator hand feeds print media into said entrance slot.
- 33. The portable printer of claim 32 wherein said printer further comprises means for engaging said sheet feeder substantially against said base and means for disposing said printing unit at an angle of substantially 135 degrees relative to said sheet feeder when said portable printer is in said manual printing mode.
- 34. A portable printer comprising:
- a substantially planar base:
- a frame mounted on said base;
- a printing unit having paper entrance and exit slots, said printing unit being pivotally mounted on said frame;
- an automatic sheet feeder pivotally mounted on said frame;
- means for disposing said sheet feeder and printing unit at a first predetermined angular position relative to one another in an automatic printing mode to permit said sheet feeder to feed print media into said entrance slot; and
- means for disposing said sheet feeder and said printing unit at a second predetermined angular position relative to one another in a manual printing mode to permit an operator to hand feed paper into said entrance slot.
- 35. The printer of claim 34 wherein said printing unit and said sheet feeder are rotatably mounted to said base about a substantially common axis.
- 36. The printer of claim 35 wherein said means for disposing said sheet feeder and said printing unit in said automatic mode includes means for disposing said sheet feeder and said printing unit at an angle of substantially 90 degrees relative to one another.
- 37. The printer of claim 36 further comprising means for engaging said sheet feeder substantially against said base with said printing unit being disposed substantially upright relative to said base in said automatic mode.
- 38. The printer of claim 36 further comprising means for disposing said sheet feeder and said printing unit each at substantially 45 degrees relative to said base in said automatic mode.
- 39. The printer of claim 36 wherein said sheet feeder is mounted opposite said paper entrance slot for feeding print media thereto in said automatic mode.
- 40. The printer of claim 35 wherein said printer further comprises means for disposing said printing unit and said sheet feeder at an angle of substantially 135 degrees relative to one another in said manual mode.
- 41. The printer of claim 40 wherein said printer further comprises means for engaging said sheet feeder substantially against said base in said manual mode.
- 42. A portable printer comprising:
- a substantially planar base;
- a frame mounted on said base;
- a printing unit;
- a rotatable member mounted on said frame for rotation about an axis of said member, said member including a slot along one side thereof in which said printing unit is receivable, said printing unit being connected to said rotatable member when said printing unit is received in said slot, said printing unit being connectable to said member for rotation between a first position in which a side of said printing unit is substantially flush against said base and a second position in which said printing unit side is away from said base; and
- means for preventing said printing unit from being disconnected from said rotatable member when said printing unit is in said first position.
- 43. The portable printer of claim 42 wherein said portable printer further includes a first locking element formed on said printing unit side and a second locking element formed on said base, said first and second locking elements engaging one another when said printing unit is in said first position.
- 44. The portable printer of claim 43 wherein said locking elements comprise first and second substantially planar surfaces which substantially flushly about one another when said printing unit is in said first position.
- 45. The portable printer of claim 43 wherein said first locking element further comprises a concave surface formed on said printing unit side.
- 46. The portable printer of claim 45 wherein said second locking element further comprises a convex surface formed on said substantially planar base, said convex surface being received in said concave surface when said printing unit is in said first position.
- 47. The portable printer of claim 46 wherein said first and second locking elements further include complementary curved surfaces.
- 48. The portable printer of claim 42 wherein said printer further includes means for locking said rotatable member against rotation when said printing unit is in said first position.
- 49. The portable printer of claim 42 wherein said portable printer further includes a sheet feeder mounted on said frame for rotation about an axis of said sheet feeder.
- 50. The portable printer of claim 49 wherein said portable printer further includes means for locking said sheet feeder against said base.
- 51. A portable printer comprising:
- a substantially planar base;
- a printing unit;
- a sheet feeder;
- means for rotating said printing unit and said sheet feeder relative to said base about a substantially common axis of rotation;
- means for locking said sheet feeder to said base;
- means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against rotation relative to one another; and
- a control for simultaneously operating said means for locking said sheet feeder to said base and said means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against rotation relative to one another.
- 52. The portable printer of claim 51 wherein said means for locking said sheet feeder to said base comprises:
- a slot formed in said base; and
- a locking element formed on said sheet feeder, said locking element engaging said slot when said sheet feeder is urged against said base.
- 53. The portable printer of claim 51 wherein said printer further comprises:
- a frame mounted on said base; and
- means for pivotally connecting said printing unit and said sheet feeder to said frame.
- 54. The portable printer of claim 53 wherein said printer further comprises:
- a rotatable member mounted on said frame for rotation about an axis thereof; and
- means for attaching said printing unit to said rotatable member.
- 55. The portable printer of claim 54 wherein said means for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against rotation relative to one another further comprises:
- a slot formed in said rotatable member; and
- a locking member mounted on said sheet feeder and insertable into said slot for preventing such relative rotation of said printing unit and said sheet feeder.
- 56. A portable printer comprising:
- a substantially planar base;
- a frame mounted on said base;
- a rotatable member mounted on said frame for rotation about an axis;
- a printing unit connectable to said rotatable member for rotation therewith;
- a sheet feeder pivotally mounted on said frame for rotation substantially about said axis; and
- means for locking said sheet feeder to said base and for locking said sheet feeder and said printing unit against relative rotation.
- 57. The portable printer of claim 56 wherein said locking means further comprises:
- a slot formed in said rotatable member; and
- a spring-biased locking member mounted on said sheet feeder for engaging said slot when said rotatable member and said sheet feeder assume a predetermined angular position relative to one another.
- 58. The portable printer of claim 57 wherein said locking means further comprises:
- a slot formed in said base; and
- a second spring-biased locking member mounted on said sheet feeder for engaging said base slot when said sheet feeder is rotated against said base.
- 59. The portable printer of claim 58 wherein said sheet feeder further includes a single operator control for simultaneously urging said first and second locking members into positions in which neither engages the slot associated therewith.
- 60. A portable printer comprising:
- a substantially planar base;
- a frame mounted on said base;
- a rotatable member mounted on said frame for rotation about an axis;
- a printing unit connectable to said rotatable member for rotation therewith;
- a sheet feeder pivotally mounted on said frame for rotation substantially about said axis;
- a slot formed in said rotatable member; and
- a spring-biased locking member mounted on said sheet feeder for engaging said slot for locking said sheet feeder to said base and for locking said printing unit and said sheet feeder against relative rotation when both said sheet feeder and said printing unit are rotated against said base.
- 61. The portable printer of claim 60 wherein said rotatable member comprises an elongate cylinder having a slot therein for receiving said printing unit, said printer further including means for preventing withdrawal of said printing unit from said cylinder slot when said printing unit is rotated against said base.
