Claims
- 1. A printer, comprising: a housing, a platen roll rotatably mounted in the housing, a gear on the platen roll, a subassembly pivotally mounted in the housing, a print head mounted on the subassembly, the print head being cooperable with the platen roll, an electric motor mounted on the subassembly, gearing on the subassembly driven by the motor and meshing with the gear for driving the platen roll, and at least one spring acting on the subassembly for urging the print head into printing cooperation with the platen roll and for urging the gearing into mesh with the gear.
- 2. A printer for printing on labels releasably adhered to a carrier and wound into a label roll, comprising: a housing having an openable front door, space inside the housing for mounting a label roll, a motor-driven platen roll, a print head cooperable with the platen roll, a pressure roll mounted on the front door and cooperable with the platen roll for urging the carrier web against the platen roll, a delaminator mounted on the front door for delaminating printed labels from the carrier web, and the label roll being mounted for rotation on the front door.
- 3. A printer as defined in claim 2, including a compartment inside the housing for receiving a battery, the compartment being accessible for inserting or removing the battery when the front door is open.
- 4. A printer, comprising: a housing having a space for receiving a web of labels in roll form, a print head and a cooperable platen roll for printing on the labels, a front door, a pair of spaced holder members mounted on the door for holding a supply roll, the front door being openable to facilitate loading a label roll on the holder members.
- 5. A printer as defined in claim 4, wherein the holder members are adjustably mounted to accommodate supply rolls of different widths.
- 6. A printer as defined in claim 4, wherein the holders are mounted on the front door for sliding movement toward and away from each other to accommodate label rolls of different widths.
- 7. A printer, comprising: a housing having a space for receiving labels releasably adhered to a carrier web in roll form, a pivotally mounted front door, a print head, a platen roll mounted on the front door, the print head and the platen roll being cooperable to print on the labels, and a delaminator mounted on the front door for delaminating printed labels from the carrier web.
- 8. A printer, comprising: a housing having space for receiving a supply roll of labels or tags, a replaceable operative platen roll, a print head cooperable with the operative platen roll for printing on labels or tags, a spare platen roll, and a storage space within the housing for storing the spare platen roll for replacement of the operative platen roll.
- 9. A printer, comprising: a housing having space for receiving a supply roll of labels or tags, a print head and a cooperable platen roll for printing on the labels or tags, a motor for driving the platen roll to advance the labels or tags during printing, at least one upstanding printed circuit board for the motor and the print head, at least one printed circuit board providing radio control for the printer, the housing having space for receiving a battery, and at least one access door for accessing the label roll receiving space and the battery receiving space.
- 10. A printer, comprising: a housing, a front door, a print head and a cooperable platen roll for printing on labels or tags from a supply roll, a supply roll holder mounted on the front door, the holder including a pair of holder members movable in unison toward and away from each other and a rack and pinion mechanism for controlling the holder members, the door being openable to enable a supply roll to be mounted on the holder members.
- 11. A printer, comprising: a housing having a front door, a print head and a cooperable platen roll for printing on labels releasably adhered to a carrier web, a latch movable between latched and unlatched positions for latching and unlatching the front door to the housing, a delaminator for delaminating labels from the web, a pressure roll for urging the carrier web against the platen roll, the pressure roll being mounted on a movably mounted carrier, and a cam device for moving the carrier to move the pressure roll out of contact with the platen roll when the latch is moved toward its unlatched position.
- 12. A printer as defined in claim 11, wherein the latch is slidably mounted on the door.
- 13. A printer, comprising: a housing, a print head and a cooperable platen roll for printing on labels, an electric motor for driving the platen roll, a battery compartment for a battery for powering the print head and the motor, the battery compartment having three sides, resilient U-shaped conductors received by the three sides of the battery compartment, the compartment having at least one access opening, and the conductors having contacts projecting through the opening for making contact with a battery in the battery compartment.
- 14. A printer, comprising: a housing having a front door, a print head and a cooperable platen roll for printing on labels releasably adhered to a carrier web, a delaminator for delaminating labels from the web, a pressure roll for urging the carrier web against the platen roll, a carrier for movably mounting the pressure roll, a slide for moving the carrier between a position wherein the pressure roll is in pressure contact with the platen roll and the intervening carrier web and a position spaced from the platen roll.
- 15. A printer, comprising: a housing, a print head and a cooperable platen roll in the housing, the housing having space for housing a battery, a battery compartment in the housing, electrical contacts for contacting a battery, at least one access port in the housing aligned with the contacts for enabling a battery charger to charge a battery in the battery compartment.
- 16. A printer, comprising: a housing, a front door for the housing, a print head and a cooperable platen roll disposed in the housing, two pads on the door and two pads on the housing, the pads serving both as feet and as protection against damage to the printer.
- 17. A printer as defined in claim 16, wherein at least one of the pads has a pair of triangular side portions and a bottom portion, the pad having ears with holes, projections on the inside of the housing received in the holes, and access openings in the housing for enabling the ears to extend to the inside of the housing to be received on the projections.
- 18. A printer, comprising: a housing having a top portion with manually actuatable keys, an electric motor mounted below the keys, the housing having space below the electric motor for receiving a supply roll of a printable web, a battery compartment below the roll receiving space, an upstanding printed circuit board at the rear of the housing, a print head and a cooperable platen at the front of the housing, a front door, and a holder on the door for holding a supply roll in the label roll receiving space.
