Claims
- 1. A printer, comprising: a housing having space for receiving a supply roll of labels or tags, a replaceable operative platen roll, a print head cooperable with the operative platen roll for printing on labels or tags, a spare platen roll, and a storage space within the housing for storing the spare platen roll for replacement of the operative platen roll, wherein the number of platen rolls exceeds the number of print heads.
- 2. A printer as defined in claim 1, wherein the operative platen roll and the spare platen roll each have a non-stick surface.
- 3. A printer as defined in claim 1, wherein the storage space is accessible from the supply roll-receiving space.
- 4. A printer as defined in claim 2, wherein the storage space is accessible from the supply roll-receiving space.
- 5. A printer as defined in claim 1, wherein the housing has an openable door, and wherein the supply roll-receiving space is accessible when the door is open.
- 6. A printer as defined in claim 2, wherein the housing has an operable door, and wherein the supply roll-receiving space is accessible when the door is open.
- 7. A printer as defined in claim 1, including a subassembly pivotally mounted in the housing, a gear on the operative platen roll, a gear on the spare platen roll, an electric motor mounted on the subassembly, gearing on the subassembly driven by the motor and meshing with the gear on the operative platen roll, at least one spring acting on the subassembly for urging the print head into printing cooperation with the operative platen roll and for urging the gearing into mesh with the gear on the operative platen roll, the housing including a front door, a delaminator mounted on the front door for delaminating printed labels from a carrier web, a pair of spaced holder members mounted on the door for holding the supply roll, the housing having a compartment for receiving a battery, the compartment being accessible from the supply roll-receiving space for inserting or removing the battery when the front door is open, an upstanding printed circuit board for the motor and the print head, a latch for latching the door, and pads on the housing serving both as feet and as protection against damage to the printer.
- 8. A printer, comprising: a housing having space for receiving a supply roll of labels or tags, a replaceable operative elongate platen roll, an elongate print head cooperable with the operative platen roll for printing on labels or tags, a spare platen roll, and a storage space within the housing for storing the spare platen roll for replacement of the operative platen roll.
- 9. A printer as defended in claim 8, wherein the operative platen roll and the spare platen roll each have a non-stick surface.
- 10. A printer as defined in claim 8, wherein the storage space is accessible from the supply roll-receiving space.
- 11. A printer as defined in claim 9, wherein the storage space is accessible from the supply roll-receiving space.
- 12. A printer as defined in claim 8, wherein the housing has an openable door, and wherein the supply roll-receiving space is accessible when the door is open.
- 13. A printer as defined in claim 9, wherein the housing has an operable door, and wherein the supply roll-receiving space is accessible when the door is open.
