Claims
- 1. A portable data collection terminal comprising:
- a housing having a frontal side including a display screen and a keyboard wherein the display screen includes a screen area and a graphic data input mechanism disposed coincident with the screen area; and
- a power management circuit mechanism including a non-volatile memory and a shadowing circuit configured to operably provide
- (a) shadowing of input and output device states of the terminal, and
- (b) storing microprocessor register states, including input and output device states, to the non-volatile memory as the terminal is being shut down.
- 2. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 1, further comprising:
- (a) a detection mechanism configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined condition of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said power management circuit mechanism having a shut down mechanism configured to operably shut down operation of the portable data collection terminal upon receipt of said signal provided by said detection mechanism.
- 3. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) an internal power source configured to operably provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined temperature of said internal power source.
- 4. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) an internal power source configured to operably provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined change in a temperature of said internal power source.
- 5. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) an internal power source configured to operably provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined change in a voltage output of said internal power source.
- 6. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) an internal power source configured to operably provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined maximum voltage at the output of said internal power source.
- 7. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) an internal power source configured to operably provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined minimum voltage at the output of said internal power source.
- 8. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) an internal power source configured to operably provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined change in an amperage output of said internal power source.
- 9. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) an internal power source configured to operably provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined maximum amperage at the output of said internal power source.
- 10. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) an internal power source configured to operably provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a predetermined minimum amperage at the output of said internal power source.
- 11. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) said housing further having a compartment having
- (1) a power source therein configured to provide power for the components of the portable data collection terminal, and
- (2) a door with a closed configuration; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a movement of said door from said closed configuration.
- 12. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 2, including:
- (a) said housing further having a compartment having
- (1) a memory card component therein, and
- (2) a door with a closed configuration; and
- (b) said detection mechanism being configured to be operably responsive to, and to provide a signal upon, detection of a movement of said door from said closed configuration.
- 13. A portable data collection terminal comprising:
- a) a housing including a non-volatile memory and a memory card door having a closed configuration;
- b) a power management circuit having
- (1) a first portion configured to operably store electrical states, including input and output device states, to said non-volatile memory,
- (2) a second portion configured to operably trap input and output instructions, and
- (3) a third portion configured to operably shadow write said trapped input and output instructions to said non-volatile memory during normal operations of the portable data collection terminal; and
- c) a detection mechanism configured to operably signal said power management circuit upon movement of said memory card door from said closed configuration.
- 14. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 13, further comprising:
- (a) said housing having a display screen; and
- (b) a handgrip extension pod configured to operably contain a selected accessory device communicably coupled to said housing, wherein said handgrip extension pod has a width less than a corresponding width of said housing and is disposed on an underside of said housing such that said display screen is protected from accidental contact by a user's hand gripping said handgrip extension pod.
- 15. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 14, wherein said accessory device is a scanner adapted to read indicia disposed on a surface spaced apart from the portable data collection terminal.
- 16. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 13, wherein said housing further includes a recessed pen gripping holder.
- 17. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 13, wherein said housing comprises:
- (a) a first portion; and
- (b) a second portion; and
- wherein said first portion and said second portion form a homogeneously linked boundary region therebetween.
- 18. A portable data collection terminal comprising a housing including a display screen and a keyboard having a plurality of keys disposed in a frontal side of said housing wherein:
- a) said display screen includes a screen area and a graphic data input mechanism disposed coincident with said screen area;
- b) said keyboard and said graphic data input mechanism are configured to operate independently of each other wherein operation of the portable data collection terminal may instantaneously switch between said keyboard and said graphic data input means; and
- c) a control mechanism configured to operably
- (1) store electrical states including input and output device states,
- (2) trap input and output instructions, and
- (3) shadow write said trapped input and output instructions during normal operations of the portable data collection terminal.
- 19. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 18, further comprising a handgrip extension pod configured to operably contain a selected accessory device wherein said handgrip extension pod has a width less than a corresponding width of said housing and is disposed on an underside of said housing, beneath said frontal side of said housing, wherein said display screen is protected from accidental contact by a user's hand gripping said handgrip extension pod.
- 20. The portable data collection terminal according to claim 18, wherein said graphic data input mechanism includes a touch sensitive screen.
