Claims
- 1. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web, an upper run of said web defining a conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; each of said pusher shoes including a diverting assembly, said diverting assembly including an article-contacting member, said article-contacting member being flexible, thereby cushioning impact with articles being diverted.
- 2. The sorter apparatus of claim 1 wherein said article-contacting member further includes voids in order to further cushion impact with articles being diverted.
- 3. The sorter apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said pusher shoes further includes a base moving along at least one slat, said diverting assembly supported by said base.
- 4. The sorter apparatus of claim 3 wherein said base and diverting assembly are integrally formed.
- 5. The sorter apparatus of claim 3 wherein said diverting assembly is a separate assembly that is joined with said base.
- 6. The sorter apparatus of claim 5 wherein said diverting assembly is joined with said base in a manner that allows said diverting assembly to be joined with either lateral side of said base.
- 7. The sorter apparatus of claim 6 wherein said diverting assembly includes projections which extend within openings in said base.
- 8. The sorter apparatus of claim 5 wherein said diverting assembly includes projections which extend within openings in said base.
- 9. The sorter apparatus of claim 6 wherein each of said pusher shoes includes laterally sloping deflection surfaces that face at least away from said contacting member.
- 10. The sorter apparatus of claim 9 wherein said laterally sloping deflection surfaces are defined by said base and by said diverting assembly.
- 11. The sorter apparatus of claim 9 wherein each of said pusher shoes further includes longitudinally sloping deflection surfaces that face at least one of forward or rearward with respect to movement of said web.
- 12. The sorter apparatus of claim 11 longitudinally sloping deflection surfaces are defined by said base and by said diverting assembly.
- 13. The sorter apparatus of claim 1 wherein said article contacting member has a generally convex surface that contacts articles.
- 14. The sorter apparatus of claim 13 wherein said generally convex surface is generally arcuate.
- 15. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web, an upper run of said web defining a conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a linear motor propulsion system for propelling said web, said linear motor propulsion system comprising at least one motor primary and a plurality of motor secondaries; said motor secondaries including magnet plates within said slats; and at least one elastic spring member positioning each of said magnet plates within the associated ones of said slats.
- 16. The sorter apparatus of claim 15 wherein said elastic spring members are made from aluminum and said magnet plates are made from steel.
- 17. The sorter apparatus of claim 16 wherein said slats are made from aluminum.
- 18. The sorter apparatus in claim 15 wherein said at least one elastic spring member is deformed to an arcuate shape.
- 19. The sorter apparatus in claim 15 wherein said slats have a width in a direction laterally of said conveying surface and a length in a direction of travel of said web and wherein said magnet plates have a width that is less than half of the width of said slats.
- 20. The sorter apparatus in claim 19 wherein said at least one elastic spring member has a width that is substantially the same as the width of said magnet plates.
- 21. The sorter apparatus in claim 19 wherein said magnet plates have a length that is substantially the same as lengths of said slats.
- 22. The sorter apparatus in claim 21 wherein said at least one elastic spring member has a length that is greater that half of the length of said magnet plates.
- 23. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web, an upper run of said web defining a conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a plurality of diverting rails extending diagonally under said conveying surface; a plurality of diverters associated with said diverting rails; wherein at least one of said pusher shoes includes a base and transfer assembly extending from said base below said conveying surface; wherein at least one of said diverters includes an actuator for selectively actuating said transfer assembly toward the associated one of said diverting rails; wherein said transfer assembly comprises a toggle, a leading roller supported by said toggle that is selectively actuated by said actuator and a shaft rotatably supporting said leading roller from said toggle, said shaft extending from said toggle in a direction opposite from said base.
- 24. The sorter apparatus in claim 23 wherein said toggle is joined with said base by a rotary coupling, said rotary coupling including another shaft rotatably supporting said toggle, said another shaft extending from said toggle in said direction opposite from said shoe body.
- 25. The sorter apparatus in claim 24 including a vane extending from said toggle in said direction opposite from said shoe body.
- 26. The sorter apparatus in claim 25 wherein said vane is between said shaft and said another shaft.
- 27. The sorter apparatus in claim 24 wherein said another shaft also rotatably supports at least one other roller.
- 28. The sorter apparatus in claim 27 wherein said at least one other roller comprises at least two other rollers rotatably supported by said another shaft.
- 29. The sorter apparatus in claim 24 wherein said rotary coupling includes a removal connection which retains said toggle with said shoe body throughout limited rotation of said toggle, wherein said toggle is constrained to said limited rotation.
- 30. The sorter apparatus in claim 23 wherein said toggle comprises an elongated member and further including at least one void in said toggle in order to reduce weight of said toggle.
- 31. The sorter apparatus in claim 23 wherein said leading roller is made up of a magnetically permeable material and said actuator comprises an electromagnetic actuator.
- 32. The sorter apparatus in claim 31 wherein said leading roller comprises an inner bushing made of a polymeric material and an outer casing made from steel.
- 33. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web, an upper run of said web defining a conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface, said pusher shoes having slat engagement portions engaging the slats at shoe engaging portions of the slats; each of said pusher shoes having a body made of a first polymeric material, and wear pads made of a different second polymeric material, said wear pads engaging the slats at said engagement portions, said second polymeric material being self-lubricating.
- 34. The positive displacement sorter apparatus of claim 33 wherein said first polymeric material is selected for its structural strength.
- 35. The positive displacement sorter apparatus of claim 33 wherein said shoe and slat engaging portions define a lateral stabilizer for resisting rotation about a vertical axis.
- 36. The positive displacement sorter apparatus of claim 35 wherein said lateral stabilizer comprises said slat engaging portions of said shoes protruding into said shoe engaging portions of said slats.
- 37. The positive displacement sorter apparatus of claim 33 wherein said wear pads are strips that fit over projections of said base.
- 38. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web having opposite lateral sides, said endless web having upper and lower portions and transition portions between said upper and lower portions, said upper portion of said web defining a conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; and separate take-up assemblies to provide substantially independent adjustment of said opposite lateral sides of said web to maintain tension of said web.
- 39. The sorter apparatus of claim 38 including a support track network, a wheel assembly moveably supporting said endless web for movement on said support track network, said support track network including opposite lateral tracks supporting opposite lateral sides of said web, and wherein each of said take-up assemblies includes a stationary portion and a moveable portion.
- 40. The sorter apparatus of claim 39 including at least one expansion joint between said stationary and moveable portions to provide track network continuity between said stationary and moveable portions.
- 41. The sorter apparatus of claim 39 including a force-producing member applying a force on said moveable portion.
- 42. The sorter apparatus of claim 41 wherein said force-producing member produces a substantially constant force irrespective of position of said moveable portion.
- 43. The sorter apparatus of claim 39 wherein said moveable portion is generally horizontally moveable.
- 44. The sorter apparatus of claim 38 including a linear motor propulsion system for propelling said web.
- 45. The sorter apparatus of claim 39 wherein each of said lateral tracks includes at least one end portion, said at least one portion formed as a curved track, said curved track having radii that are different for different portions of said at least one end portion.
- 46. The sorter apparatus of claim 45 wherein said radii are generally increasing in a direction toward said lower portion of said web.
- 47. The sorter apparatus of claim 46 including a horizontally extended track portion extending from said curved track at a lower end thereof.
- 48. The sorter apparatus of claim 45 wherein said at least one portion is at one of said take-up assemblies.
- 49. The sorter apparatus of claim 45 wherein said at least one end portion is at a stationary end of said sorter apparatus opposite from said take-up assemblies.
- 50. The sorter apparatus of claim 38 wherein at least one of said pusher shoes includes a base and an elongated transfer assembly extending from a base below said conveying surface and wherein said sorter apparatus includes a guide track for said transfer assembly adjacent at least one of said tracks at an end of said sorter apparatus.
- 51. The sorter apparatus of claim 50 wherein said guide track is at one of said take-up assemblies.
- 52. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web having opposite lateral sides, said upper run of said web defining a conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a moveable web support; and a product handling conveyor at said web support for supplying product to or taking product away from said conveying surface, said product handling conveyor having a generally flexible body defining another conveying surface and having an end of said body moveable with said web support.
- 53. The sorter apparatus of claim 52 wherein said product handling conveyor takes product away from said conveying surface and including a driven roller adjacent said conveying surface for assisting product onto said another conveying surface.
- 54. The sorter apparatus of claim 53 wherein said driven roller has a high-friction surface.
- 55. The sorter apparatus of claim 52 wherein said end of said flexible body is physically connected with portions of said web support.
- 56. The sorter apparatus of claim 52 including a support track network defining said web support, a wheel assembly moveably supporting said endless web for movement on said support track network, wherein said support track network including opposite lateral horizontal portions supporting opposite lateral sides of said web.
- 57. The sorter apparatus of claim 52 wherein said flexible body comprises a series of interconnected links.
- 58. The sorter apparatus of claim 52 wherein said another conveying surface comprises a gravity conveying surface.
- 59. The sorter apparatus of claim 52 wherein said web support includes separate take-up assemblies to provide substantially independent adjustment of opposite lateral sides of said web.
- 60. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web, an upper run of said web defining a conveying surface conveying articles in a longitudinal direction; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a plurality of diverting rails extending diagonally under said conveying surface; a plurality of diverters associated with said diverting rails; wherein at least one of said pusher shoes includes a base and transfer assembly extending from said base below said conveying surface; wherein at least one of said diverters includes an actuator for selectively actuating said transfer assembly toward the associated one of said diverting rails; wherein said diverting rails have terminal portions and wherein said terminal portions and said transfer assemblies are configured to direct said transfer assembly in said longitudinal direction in a substantially continuous change of direction after moving pusher shoes laterally of said conveying surface, thereby reducing audible noise at the end of a divert.
- 61. The sorter apparatus of claim 60 wherein said transfer assemblies have at least one roller for engaging one of said diverting rails and a guide member extending below said at least one roller.
- 62. The sorter apparatus of claim 61 wherein said terminal portions include an upper surface selectively engaging said at least one roller and a lower surface selectively engaging said guide member, said lower surface directing said guide member in said longitudinal direction.
- 63. The sorter apparatus of claim 62 wherein said guide member is at least one chosen from an elongated vane and a pin.
- 64. The sorter apparatus of claim 60 wherein said diverters and said diverting rails are configured to divert product at least initially without rotation of the product.
- 65. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web having upper and lower portions and transition portions between said upper and lower portions, said upper portion of said web defining a conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a support track network; a wheel assembly moveably supporting said endless web for movement on said support track network; said wheel assembly comprising at least one wheel and at least one shaft rotatably supporting said at least one wheel, wherein said at least one wheel is retained on said at least one shaft by a displaced portion of said at least one shaft.
- 66. The sorter apparatus of claim 65 wherein said displaced portion of said at least one shaft is formed by riveting.
- 67. The sorter apparatus of claim 66 wherein said displaced portion of said at least one shaft is formed by orbital riveting.
- 68. The sorter apparatus of claim 65 wherein said at least one shaft includes a central passage.
- 69. The sorter apparatus of claim 65 wherein said at least one wheel comprises a plurality of horizontally oriented wheels and a plurality of vertically oriented wheels.
- 70. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web having upper and lower portions and transition portions between said upper and lower portions, said upper portion of said web defining a conveying surface; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a support track network; a wheel assembly moveably supporting said endless web for movement on said support track network; said support track network comprising a frame member defining at least one vertical surface and at least one horizontal surface, said surfaces for guiding said wheel assembly; and a cover extending from said frame member in a direction opposite from said web.
- 71. The sorter apparatus of claim 70 wherein said cover is attachable to said frame member by a rotational motion.
- 72. The sorter apparatus of claim 70 wherein said frame member includes first and second joined extruded sections, said first extruded section defining said at least one horizontal surface and said second extruded section defining said at least one vertical surface.
- 73. The sorter apparatus of claim 72 wherein said cover is attachable to said second extruded section.
- 74. The sorter apparatus of claim 72 wherein said first and second extruded sections include overlapping flanges that restrain movement of said at least one vertical surface.
- 75. A positive displacement sorter apparatus, comprising:
a plurality of interconnected slats defining an endless web, an upper run of said web defining a conveying surface conveying articles in a longitudinal direction; a plurality of pusher shoes, each moving along at least one of said plurality of slats to laterally displace articles on said conveying surface; a feed conveyor feeding product to said conveying surface; said feed conveyor comprising a frame, an endless conveyor belt supported at said frame and a drive assembly for driving said conveyor belt, said drive assembly having an operating position, said conveyor belt fitting over said frame when said drive assembly is retracted from said operating position for replacement of said conveyor belt.
- 76. The sorter apparatus of claim 75 including a take-up assembly for maintaining tension on said conveyor belt when said drive assembly is in said operating position.
- 77. The sorter apparatus of claim 76 wherein said drive assembly includes a drive roller and wherein said take-up assembly positions said conveyor belt around a portion of said drive roller when said drive assembly is in said operating position.
- 78. The sorter apparatus of claim 75 including another frame for moveably supporting said endless web, wherein said frame is connected with said another frame.
- 79. The sorter apparatus of claim 75 including a product discharge conveyor at an opposite end of said conveying surface from said feed conveyor for taking product away from said conveying surface.
- 80. The sorter apparatus of claim 79 wherein said product handling conveyor has a generally flexible body defining another conveying surface.
- 81. The sorter apparatus of claim 80 including separate take-up assemblies to provide substantially independent adjustment of opposite lateral sides of said web; and said feed conveyor having an end of said body moveable with said take-up assemblies.
- 82. The sorter apparatus of claim 80 including a driven roller adjacent said conveying surface for assisting product onto said another conveying surface.
- 83. The sorter apparatus of claim 82 wherein said driven roller has a high-friction surface.
