Claims
- 1. A thermosetting powder coating composition comprising a co-reactable particulate mixture of:
- (a) 35 to 85 percent by weight based on weight on based solids of a carboxylic acid group-containing acrylic polymer having a Tg in the range of about 35.degree. C. to 100.degree. C.;
- (b) from about 1 to 25 percent by weight based on weight of resin solids of a carboxylic acid group-containing polyester having a number average molecular weight from about 300 to about 1500 and an acid equivalent weight of from about 150 to about 750, said polyester crystalline at temperatures under 50.degree. C. for assisting flow of the powder coating composition; and
- (c) a beta-hydroxyalkylamide curing agent, the equivalent ratio of beta-hydroxyalkylamide equivalents to carboxylic acid equivalents being within the range of about 0.6 to 1.6:1.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 in which the acrylic polymer has a number average molecular weight within the range of 1,500 to 15,000.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 in which the acrylic polymer is formed from polymerizing an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from the class consisting of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, a C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid including mixtures of such esters and a polymerizable vinyl aromatic
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the polyester is the action product of a C.sub.4 to C.sub.20 dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic diol at an equivalent ratio of acid to alcohol of about 3:2 to about 2:1.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 in which the beta-hydroxyalkylamide is of the structure: ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1 is H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl; R.sub.2 is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl or ##STR5## wherein R.sub.1 is as described above and A is a chemical bond or monovalent or polyvalent organic radical derived from saturated, unsaturated or aromatic hydrocarbon radicals including substituted hydrocarbon radicals containing from 2 to 20 carbon atoms; m equals 1 to 2 and n equals 0 to 2 and m+n is at least 2.
- 6. The composition of claim 4 wherein the equivalent ratio of acid to alcohol in the reaction product is about 2:1.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the polyester melts in range from about 50.degree. C. to about 110.degree. C.
