Claims
- 1. In a powder coating composition comprising a solid particulate film-forming mixture of a polymer containing reactive functional groups and a curing agent having functional groups reactive with the functional groups of the polymer wherein the improvement comprises an organic polysiloxane having reactive functional groups, said polysiloxane having the following general formula: where m is at least 1; m′ is 0 to 50; n is 0 to 50; the R groups are monovalent hydrocarbon groups connected to the silicon atoms; Ra has the following structure:R1—O—X wherein R1 is alkylene, oxyalkylene or alkylene aryl; and X is a moiety containing at least one reactive functional group selected from the group consisting of OH, NCO, carboxylate, primary amine, secondary amine, amide, carbamate, thiol and epoxy functional groups.
- 2. The powder coating composition of claim 1 wherein n+m and n+m′ is 2 or 3.
- 3. The powder coating composition of claim 1 wherein X is a moiety which contains epoxy functional groups, and the curing agent is a polycarboxylic acid.
- 4. The powder coating composition of claim 1 wherein when X is a moiety containing epoxy functional groups, the organic polysiloxane is the reaction product of the following:(a) a polysiloxane polyol of the following general formula: where m is at least 1; m′ is 0 to 50; n is 0 to 50; the R groups are monovalent hydrocarbon groups connected to the silicon atoms; Rb has the following structure: R1—O—Y wherein R1 is alkylene, oxyalkylene or alkylene aryl; and the moiety Y is H, monohydroxy-substituted alkylene or oxyalkylene, or R2—(—CH2—OH)p wherein p is 2 or 3; and where R2 is when p is 2 and R3 is C1 to C4 alkyl, orR2is when p is 3; and(b) at least one polyepoxide.
- 5. The powder coating composition of claim 4 wherein the polyepoxide is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic polyepoxides, cycloaliphatic polyepoxides, and mixtures thereof.
- 6. The powder coating composition of claim 1 wherein X is an oligomeric or polymeric group containing terminal OH, NCO, carboxylate, primary amine, amide, carbamate or secondary amine functional groups.
- 7. The powder coating composition of claim 6 wherein the organic polysiloxane is the reaction product of:(a) a polysiloxane polyol having the general structural formula: where m is at least 1; m′ is 0 to 50; n is 0 to 50; the R groups are monovalent hydrocarbon groups connected to the silicon atoms; Rb has the following structure: R1—O—Y wherein R1 is alkylene, oxyalkylene or alkylene aryl; and Y is H, mono hydroxy-substituted alkylene or oxyalkylene, or R2—(—CH2—OH)p wherein p is 2 or 3, and where R2 is when p is 2 and R3 is C1 to C4 alkyl, orR2 is when p is 3;(b) at least one polyisocyanate; and (c) optionally at least one compound containing at least two active hydrogen atoms per molecule selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl, primary amine and secondary amine.
- 8. The powder coating composition of claim 7 wherein the polyisocyanate is a diisocyanate.
- 9. The powder coating composition of claim 8 wherein the polyisocyanate is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic diisocyanates, cycloaliphatic diisocyanates, aromatic polyisocyanates and mixtures thereof.
- 10. The powder coating composition of claim 1 wherein X is an oligomeric or polymeric ester-containing moiety which is terminated with OH functional groups.
- 11. The powder coating composition of claim 10 wherein the organic polysiloxane is the condensation reaction product of the following:(a) a polysiloxane polyol having the general structural formula: where m is at least 1; m′ is 0 to 50; n is 0 to 50; the R groups are monovalent hydrocarbon groups connected to the silicon atoms; Rb has the following structure: R1—O—Y wherein R1 is alkylene, oxyalkylene or alkylene aryl; and the moiety Y is H, monohydroxy-substituted alkylene or oxyalkylene, or R2—(—CH2—OH)p wherein p is 2 or 3; and where R2 is when p is 2 and R3 is C1 to C4 alkyl, orR2 is when p is 3, and(b) at least one polycarboxylic acid; and (c) at least one organic polyol.
- 12. The powder coating composition of claim 11 wherein the polycarboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of aliphatic and cycloaliphatic polycarboxylic acids and mixtures thereof.
- 13. The powder coating composition of claim 11 wherein the organic polysiloxane is present in an amount of from 2 to 20 percent by weight based on total weight of the powder coating composition.
