Claims
- 1. A method for obtaining a bubble-free and visible haze-free coating on a substrate susceptible to outgassing and/or degradation upon heating, comprising applying a powder coating composition which comprises a film-forming blend of:a) at least one non-crystalline epoxy resin; b) at least 5% by weight and no more than 20% by weight, based on the weight of a) plus b), of at least one crystalline epoxy resin; and, c) a curing agent to facilitate curing of said composition to a thermoset state, on a surface of the substrate, and curing the powder coating on the substrate at temperatures below the substrate outgassing and/or degradation temperature until the coating reaches a thermoset state, wherein the coating film resulting on the substrate is without a visible haze.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is brass, the powder coating composition is clear, and the powder coating composition is cured at temperatures below about 350° F.
- 3. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the total amount of crystalline epoxy resin does not exceed about 15% by weight of a) plus b).
- 4. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said composition is a clear composition being essentially free of opaque pigments and fillers.
- 5. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said at least one non-crystalline epoxy resin has a Tg of greater than about 40° C.
- 6. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said at least one crystalline epoxy resin has a Tm of greater than about 90° C.
- 7. The method as claimed in claim 1, which further comprises a catalytic amount of a cure catalyst.
- 8. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said crystalline epoxy resin is selected from tetramethylbisphenol diglycidyl ether, bisphenol S diglycidyl ether, 2,5-di-t-butylbenzene-1,4-diglycidyl ether, hydroquinone diglycidyl ether, 2,5-di-t-butyl hydroquinone diglycidyl ether, terephthalic acid diglycidyl ester, diglycidyl isophthalate, epoxypropoxydimethylbenzylacrylamide, or triglycidyl isocyanurate.
- 9. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said crystalline epoxy resin is tetramethylbisphenol diglycidyl ether.
- 10. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said non-crystalline epoxy resin is a bisphenol A epoxy resin.
- 11. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the curing agent is dicyanodiamide.
- 12. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein the cure catalyst is 2-methyl imidazole.
