Claims
- 1. Powder particles for the preparation of a fine-grained hard material alloy for cutting tools consisting essentially of hard principles and binder metal with greater contents of hard principles than in high speed steel, in which the hard principles are compounds of one or more elements in the groups IVA, VA and VIA of the periodical system and Si with C, N and/or B, and the binder metal being based upon Fe, Co and/or Ni, characterized in that the hard principles are formed in situ, the particle is composed of binder metal alloy in an effective binding with the fine-grained hard principles, the volume fraction of hard principles in the particles is 35-90 percent by volume and where Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb and/or Ta are .gtoreq.55 atomic percent of the hard principle forming metals, balance being Cr, Mo and/or W, and the mean size of the particles is 1-16 .mu.m and at the most 5% of the number of particles have a size of >30 .mu.m.
- 2. Powder particles according to claim 1, characterized in that the C, N and/or B in the hard principles of the particles is replaced by O in an amount up to 20 atomic percent.
- 3. Power particles according to claim 1, characterized in that the hard principles consist of grains having a mean grain size of 0.02-0.80 .mu.m of which at the most 5% of the number of grains are >1.5 .mu.m.
- 4. Powder particles according to claim 1, characterized in that the binder metal alloy contains at the most 15 atomic percent Mn, at the most 10 atomic percent Al and at the most 1 atomic percent Cu.
- 5. Powder particles according to claim 1, characterized in that the fraction of hard principles in the particles is 35-70 percent by volume.
- 6. Powder particles according to claim 1, characterized in that the mean grain size of the particles is 2-8.mu.m.
- 7. Powder particles according to claim 3, characterized in that the mean grain size of the grains is 0.03-0.60 .mu.m.
- 8. Powder particles according to claim 5, characterized in that the binder metal alloy contains at the most 12 atomic percent Mn, 8 atomic percent Al and 0.8 atomic percent Cu.
