Claims
- 1. A space dividing system, comprising:a floor; a ceiling spaced above the floor, wherein the ceiling includes a series of structural ceiling members located at a fixed elevation relative to the floor; a column defining an upper end and a lower end, wherein the column includes a power receptacle arrangement having one or more outwardly facing receptacles, and wherein the lower end of the column is engaged with and supported by the floor and the upper end of the column is spaced below the ceiling, and wherein the column defines a passageway between the upper end and the power receptacle arrangement for enabling wiring to pass therebetween; wherein the structural ceiling members are supported above the floor independent of the column; a rigid upper connection arrangement extending from the column upper end and including a ceiling engagement arrangement for engagement with the ceiling, wherein the rigid upper connection arrangement includes a connection member having a selectively engageable variable position engagement arrangement engaged with one of the structural ceiling members, wherein the connection member comprises an adjustable length member interconnected with and extending upwardly from the upper end of the column, wherein the length of the adjustable length member above the upper end of the column is adjustable according to the height of the space between the fixed height ceiling and the upper end of the column; and a cover member separate from the adjustable length member, wherein the cover member is configured to extend between the upper end of the column and the ceiling and to enclose the adjustable length member, wherein the cover member defines a passage located exteriorly of the adjustable length member adapted to receive wiring extending between the ceiling and the passageway of the column.
- 2. The space dividing system of claim 1, wherein the adjustable length member comprises a mounting rod and wherein the variable position engagement arrangement comprises a locking arrangement for selectively fixing the position of the mounting rod relative to the upper end of the column.
- 3. The space dividing system of claim 2, wherein the mounting rod is received within a sleeve associated with the upper end of the column, wherein the mounting rod is longitudinally movable within a passage defined by the sleeve for varying the elevation of the ceiling engagement arrangement relative to the upper end of the column, and wherein the locking arrangement is operable to selectively fix the mounting rod to the sleeve for preventing relative movement between the mounting rod and the upper end of the column when the ceiling engagement arrangement is engaged with the ceiling.
- 4. The space dividing system of claim 1, further comprising one or more luminaires being mounted to the upper end of the column, wherein each luminaire comprises a lighting member secured to a mounting member, wherein the mounting member is movably engaged with the upper end of the column and is configured such that the lighting member is located exteriorly of the column and the cover member and spaced outwardly therefrom.
- 5. A space dividing system, comprising:a floor; a ceiling spaced above the floor, wherein the ceiling includes a series of structural ceiling members located at a fixed elevation relative to the floor; a column defining an upper end and a lower end, wherein the column includes an upper end member and defines a height less than the height of the ceiling such that the upper end member is spaced below the ceiling; a variable height engagement arrangement interconnected with the upper end member, wherein the variable height engagement arrangement includes a ceiling engagement member carried by an adjustable height member, wherein the ceiling engagement member is configured to engage at least one of the structural ceiling members, and wherein the adjustable height member is configured to adjust the height of the ceiling engagement member relative to the upper end member of the column; a cover arrangement separate from the adjustable height member and engaged with the upper end member of the column, wherein the cover arrangement defines an internal space within which the adjustable height member is received, wherein the cover member extends between the ceiling and the upper end member of the column; and one or more luminaires being removably mounted to the upper end member of the column, wherein each luminaire comprises a lighting member secured to a mounting member, wherein a removable engagement arrangement is interposed between the mounting member and the upper end member of the column, wherein the removable engagement arrangement is configured such that the lighting member is located exteriorly of the column and spaced outwardly therefrom, wherein the luminaire mounting members are located outwardly of the cover member.
- 6. The space dividing system of claim 5, wherein each luminaire mounting member comprises a mounting arm defining an upper end to which the lighting member is mounted and a lower end received within a sleeve interconnected with the upper end member of the column.
- 7. The space dividing system of claim 6, wherein the lower end of the luminaire mounting arm is movable within the sleeve to vary the position of the lighting member relative to the column, and further comprising a locking arrangement associated with the sleeve for selectively fixing the position of the luminaire mounting member relative to the upper end member.
- 8. The space dividing system of claim 7, wherein the adjustable height member comprises a mounting rod engaged with the upper end member of the column, and wherein each luminaire mounting member is located outwardly of the mounting rod.
- 9. The space dividing system of claim 5, wherein the cover arrangement comprises a tubular cover member having a lower end interconnected with the upper end member of the column, and an upper end positioned adjacent a downwardly facing surface defined by the ceiling.
- 10. A column for a space dividing system, comprising:a columnar assembly including a power receptacle arrangement, wherein the columnar assembly comprises an upper end member, a lower end member, and a series of vertical structural members interconnected with the upper and lower end members and extending therebetween, wherein the power receptacle arrangement is mounted to the vertical structural members; and a column cover structure engaged with the vertical structural members for concealing an internal space defined by the columnar assembly between the upper and lower end members, wherein the column cover structure comprises a series of cover members, wherein each cover member is engaged with and between a pair of the vertical structural members, wherein each cover member include an outer wall structure extending between a pair of engagement members, wherein each engagement member is engaged with one of the vertical structural members, and wherein the engagement members are releasably engaged with a pair of the vertical structural members in response to application of an inward push-on force to the cover member; wherein the vertical structural members of the columnar member and the engagement members of each cover member have mating releasable engagement surfaces configured to enable each engagement member to be engaged with the vertical structural members upon application of the inward push-on force to the cover member, wherein each vertical structural member has a generally circular cross section and wherein each engagement member includes arcuate engagement surface that,is configured to match the cross section of one of the vertical structural members.
- 11. The column of claim 10, wherein the power receptacle arrangement includes one or more power receptacles, wherein each power receptacle is mounted to and between an adjacent pair of the vertical structural members at a location at which the power receptacle is spaced from each of the upper and lower end members, and wherein the cover structure includes an upper cover member releasably engaged with the adjacent pairs of vertical structural members and extending between the upper end member and an upper surface defined by the power receptacle, and a lower cover member releasably engaged with the adjacent pair of the vertical structural members and extending between the lower end member and a lower surface defined by the power receptacle.
- 12. The column of claim 10, wherein the outer wall structure of the cover member is constructed and arranged to flex upon movement of the engagement members into engagement with the vertical structural members to provide frictional engagement of the cover member with and between the vertical structural members.
- 13. A column for a space dividing system, comprising:a columnar member including a power receptacle and upper and lower end members, wherein the columnar member defines a vertical longitudinal axis and an outer periphery, and includes a series of spaced vertical structural members extending between the upper and lower end members, wherein the vertical structural members are centered on a vertical longitudinal axis defined by the columnar member and radially spaced from each other about the outer periphery defined by the column; and cover structure engaged with the vertical structural members for concealing an internal space defined by the columnar member between the upper and lower end members, wherein the power receptacle is mounted to the vertical structural members at a location at which the power receptacle is spaced from each of the upper and lower end members, and wherein the cover structure includes an upper cover member releasably engaged with an adjacent pair of the vertical structural members and extending between the upper end member and an upper surface defined by the power receptacle, and a lower cover member releasably engaged with the adjacent pair of the vertical structural members and extending between the lower end member and a lower surface defined by the power receptacle; wherein each cover member is releasably engaged with and between a pair of the vertical structural members, wherein each cover member includes an outer wall structure extending between a pair of engagement members, wherein each engagement member is engaged with one of the vertical structural members, and wherein the engagement members are releasably engaged with the pair of the vertical structural members in response to application of an inward push-on force to the cover member.
- 14. The column of claim 13 wherein the vertical structural members of the columnar member and the engagement members of each, cover member have mating releasable engagement surfaces configured to enable each engagement member to be engaged with the vertical structural members upon application of an inward push-on force to the cover member.
- 15. The column of claim 14, wherein the vertical structural members have a generally circular cross section and wherein each engagement member includes an arcuate engagement surface that is configured to match the cross section of one of the vertical structural members.
- 16. The column of claim 15, wherein the outer wall structure of the cover member is constructed and arranged to flex upon movement of the engagement members into engagement with the vertical structural members to provide frictional engagement of the cover member with and between the vertical structural members.
