Claims
- 1. A method of operation of a remote station of a radio communications system comprising a remote station and at least first and second base station, the remote station comprising the steps of:
- powering up a receiver during first time periods corresponding to physical layer synchronization cells arriving from the first base station and second time periods corresponding to ATM cells arriving from the second base station;
- determining that handoff conditions are met;
- powering up the receiver for a third time period longer than the first and second time periods.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of powering up the receiver for the third time period comprises powering up the receiver at least until a physical layer synchronization cell is received from the second base station.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of powering up the receiver for the third time period comprises powering up the receiver at least until an ATM cell is received from the second base station following the physical layer synchronization cell from the second base station.
- 4. The method of claim 1 comprising the steps of performing a handoff from the first base station to the second base station and powering up the receiver during fourth time periods shorter than the third time period.
