Claims
- 1. A power-operated screwdriving device configured to be used with a rotary power source and a supply of screws, said screwdriving device comprising;a housing structure constructed and arranged to be engaged with the rotary power source; structure defining a drive track constructed and arranged to receive a lead screw from the supply of screws; a rotatable screw engaging bit member constructed and arranged to be engaged with the lead screw from the supply of screws during a screwdriving operation wherein the lead screw is driven into a workpiece; a releasable bit locking assembly disposed in said housing and constructed and arranged to operatively connect said bit member to the rotary power source to enable the rotary power source to rotate said bit member during the screwdriving operation; said releasable bit locking assembly including bit locking structure constructed and arranged to lockingly engage said bit member; said rotatable screw engaging bit member being engageable with the lead screw and movable relative to said drive track such that rotation of said bit member and relative movement between said bit member and said drive track drives the lead screw into the workpiece during the screwdriving operation; a manually engageable release structure disposed exteriorly of said housing structure and operatively connected to said releasable bit locking assembly; said release structure and said bit locking assembly being constructed and arranged such that manually moving said release structure in a bit releasing movement moves said releasable bit locking assembly between (1) a releasably locked position wherein said bit locking structure lockingly engages said bit member and (2) a released position wherein said bit locking structure is moved out of said locking engagement to thereby allow said bit member to be removed and replaced by another rotatable screw engaging bit member.
- 2. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 1, wherein said releasable bit locking assembly comprises:a mandrel having a rearwardly extending power source connecting portion constructed and arranged to be connected with the rotary power source, said mandrel providing a bit receiving opening opposite said connecting portion, said bit member having a connectable portion positioned and configured to be received within said bit member receiving opening, said mandrel having a radially extending opening communicating with said bit member receiving opening; said bit locking structure being constructed and arranged to lockingly engage said connectable portion of said bit member through said radially extending opening.
- 3. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 2, wherein said bit locking structure is a spherical bit locking ball;said bit locking ball being disposed within said radially extending opening of said mandrel, said releasable bit locking assembly including an annular sleeve member providing a ball engaging surface, said bit member having an annular groove extending circumferentially around said connectable portion, said annular groove being disposed adjacent said radially extending opening of said mandrel when said bit member is lockingly engaged by said bit locking structure, said annular sleeve member being movable relative to said mandrel as said bit locking assembly is moved between said locked and released positions thereof, said annular sleeve member being constructed and arranged such that, when said bit member is being moved into said releasably locked position thereof, said ball engaging surface of said sleeve member engages said bit locking ball and moves said ball through said radially extending opening into locking engagement with said annular groove of said bit member.
- 4. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 3, wherein said bit locking assembly further comprises a biasing element disposed between said sleeve member and said mandrel,said biasing element being positioned and configured to bias said sleeve member in a locking direction such that said ball engaging surface engages said bit locking ball to thereby maintain said ball in locking engagement with said annular groove, said sleeve member being constructed and arranged such that movement of said manually engageable release structure to move said locking assembly toward said released position moves said sleeve member against the bias of said biasing element so as to allow said locking ball to move out of said locking engagement with said annular groove.
- 5. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 4, wherein said bit locking assembly further comprises a bit release guide connected to said sleeve member,said housing structure having a release guide receiving opening formed therethrough, said bit release guide having a release structure connecting portion extending radially outwardly through said release guide receiving opening of said housing structure, said manually engageable release structure being connected to said release structure engaging portion and disposed exteriorly of said housing structure.
- 6. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 5, wherein said manually engageable release structure has a concave recess to facilitate manual engagement and movement of said release structure to move said locking assembly toward said released position.
- 7. A power operated screwdriving device according to claim 6, wherein said manually engageable release structure is disposed on top of said housing structure.
- 8. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 6, wherein said structure defining a drive track is a feeding assembly constructed and arranged to move a subsequent lead screw into said drive track after said screwdriving operation, the lead screw and the subsequent lead screw being releasably mounted on a collation.
- 9. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 8, wherein said housing structure is constructed and arranged to be releasably engaged with the rotary power source.
- 10. A power-operated screwdriving device configured to be used with a rotary power source and a supply of screws, said screwdriving device comprising:a housing structure constructed and arranged to be engaged with the rotary power source; structure defining a drive track constructed and arranged to receive a lead screw from the supply of screws; an elongated, rotatable screw engaging bit member constructed and arranged to be engaged with the lead screw from the supply of screws during a screwdriving operation wherein the lead screw is driven into a workpiece, said bit member being engageable with the lead screw and movable relative to said drive track such that rotation of said bit member and relative movement between said drive track and said bit member drives the lead screw into the workpiece during the screwdriving operation; a releasable bit locking assembly constructed and arranged to be operatively connected to said rotary power source such that activation of said rotary power source affects rotation of said bit locking assembly, said releaseable bit locking assembly being constructed and arranged to have said bit member removably coupled thereto so as to operatively connect said bit member to the rotary power source in releaseably locked relation; said releasable bit locking assembly having a plurality of bit member engaging surfaces configured such that when said bit member is removably coupled with said bit locking assembly said bit member engaging surfaces engage associated surfaces of said bit member to enable said releasable bit locking assembly to rotatably drive said bit member when said rotary power source is activated to affect rotation of said bit locking assembly; at least one of said releasable bit locking assembly and said bit member having bit member aligning surfaces, said bit member aligning surfaces being positioned and configured such that forced axial engagement of said bit member with said releasable bit locking assembly causes relative rotation between said screw engaging bit member and said releasable bit locking assembly until said bit member engaging surfaces are properly aligned with said associated surfaces of said bit member to facilitate properly aligned coupling of said bit member to said bit locking assembly.
- 11. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 10, wherein said one of said bit member and said releasable bit locking assembly is said bit locking assembly.
- 12. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 11, wherein said releasable bit locking assembly has a bit member receiving opening and wherein said bit member engaging surfaces are disposed about said opening;said bit member being removably insertable into said bit member receiving space and said bit member engaging surfaces being configured to engage said associated surfaces of said bit member when said bit member is removably inserted into said bit member receiving space.
- 13. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 12, wherein said bit aligning surfaces are disposed immediately adjacent to said bit receiving opening,said bit member aligning surfaces extending helically with respect to said bit member receiving opening such that said forced axial engagement causes said helically extending bit aligning surfaces to engage said bit members as said bit member is being moved generally axially towards said bit member engaging surfaces so as to cause said bit member to rotate relative to said bit member engaging surfaces until said bit member is properly aligned relative to said bit member engaging surfaces and allowed to be moved generally axially into said rotatably coupled engagement with said releasable bit locking assembly.
- 14. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 13, wherein said releasable bit locking assembly includes bit locking structure constructed and arranged to lockingly engage said screw engaging bit member so as to prevent said bit member from moving out of said rotatably coupled engagement;a manually engageable release structure disposed exteriorly of said housing structure and operatively connected to said releasable bit locking assembly; said releasable bit locking assembly being manually movable to move said releasable bit locking assembly between (1) a releasably locked position wherein said bit locking structure lockingly engages said bit member and (2) a released position wherein said bit locking structure is moved out of said locking engagement to thereby allow said bit member to be replaced by another rotatable screw engaging bit member.
- 15. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 14, wherein said releasable bit locking assembly comprises:a mandrel having a rearwardly extending power source connecting portion constructed and arranged to be connected with the rotary power source, said mandrel providing a bit receiving opening opposite said connecting portion, said mandrel having a radially extending opening communicating with said bit member receiving opening; said bit locking structure being constructed and arranged to lockingly engage said connectable end portion of said bit member through said radially extending opening.
- 16. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 15, wherein said bit locking structure is a spherical bit locking ball;said bit locking ball being disposed within said radially extending opening of said mandrel, said releasable bit locking assembly including an annular sleeve member providing a ball engaging surface, said bit member having an annular groove extending circumferentially around said connectable end portion, said annular groove being disposed adjacent said radially extending opening of said mandrel when said bit member is lockingly engaged by said bit locking structure, said annular sleeve member being movable relative to said mandrel as said bit locking assembly is moved between said locked and released positions thereof, said annular sleeve member being constructed and arranged such that, when said bit member is being moved into said releasably locked position thereof, said ball engaging surface of said sleeve member engages said bit locking ball and moves said ball through said radially extending opening into locking engagement with said annular groove of said bit member.
- 17. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 16, wherein said bit locking assembly further comprises a biasing element disposed between said sleeve member and said mandrel,said biasing element being positioned and configured to bias said sleeve member in a locking direction such that said ball engaging surface engages said bit locking ball to thereby maintain said ball in locking engagement with said annular groove, said sleeve member being constructed and arranged such that movement of said manually engageable release structure to move said locking assembly toward said released position moves said sleeve member against the bias of said biasing element so as to allow said locking ball to move out of said locking engagement with said annular groove.
- 18. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 17, wherein said bit locking assembly further comprises a bit release guide connected to said sleeve member,said housing structure having a release guide receiving opening formed therethrough, said bit release guide having a release structure connecting portion extending radially outwardly through said release guide receiving opening of said housing structure, said manually engageable release structure being connected to said release structure engaging portion and disposed exteriorly of said housing structure.
- 19. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 18, wherein said manually engageable release structure has a concave recess that facilitates manual engagement and movement of said release structure to move said locking assembly toward said released position.
- 20. A power operated screwdriving device according to claim 19, wherein said manually engageable release structure is disposed on top of said housing structure.
- 21. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 19, wherein said structure defining a drive track is a feeding assembly constructed and arranged to move a subsequent lead screw into said drive track after said screwdriving operation, the lead screw and the subsequent lead screw being releasably mounted on a collation.
- 22. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 21, wherein said housing structure is constructed and arranged to be releasably engaged with the rotary power source.
- 23. A power-operated screwdriving device configured to be used with a rotary power source and a supply of screws, said screwdriving device comprising:a housing structure constructed and arranged to be engaged with the rotary power source; structure defining a drive track constructed and arranged to receive a lead screw from the supply of screws; a rotatable screw engaging bit member constructed and arranged to be engaged with the lead screw from the supply of screws during a screwdriving operation wherein the lead screw is driven into a workpiece; a releasable bit locking assembly constructed and arranged to rotatably couple said bit member to the rotary power source such that the rotary power source can rotate said bit member during the screwdriving operation; said bit member being engageable with the lead screw and movable relative to said drive track such that rotation of said rotatable screw engaging bit member and relative movement between said bit member and said drive track drives the lead screw into the workpiece during the screwdriving operation; said releasable bit locking assembly having a power source connecting member constructed and arranged to be inserted into a connecting member receiving opening provided on the rotary power source and thus be rotatably coupled to the rotary power source when said connecting member and the connecting member receiving opening are properly aligned relative to one another; said power source connecting member having connecting member aligning surfaces, said connecting member aligning surfaces being configured to engage surfaces of the rotary power source leading forwardly of said receiving opening as said connecting member is being moved generally axially towards the connecting member receiving opening of the rotary power source so as to cause said connecting member to rotate relative to said connecting member receiving opening until said connecting member is properly aligned relative to the connecting member receiving opening and allowed to be moved generally axially into said connecting member receiving opening and thus be rotatably coupled to the rotary power source.
- 24. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 23, wherein said connecting member aligning surfaces of said bit member are provided on an end portion of said connecting member,said connecting member aligning surfaces extending helically with respect to said end portion of said connecting member such that said helically extending connecting member aligning surfaces are positioned and configured to engage said rotary power source as said connecting member is being moved generally axially towards connecting member receiving opening so as to cause said connecting member to rotate relative to said connecting member receiving opening until said connecting member is properly aligned relative to said connecting member receiving opening and allowed to be moved generally axially into said connecting member receiving opening.
- 25. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 24, wherein said releasable bit locking assembly includes bit locking structure constructed and arranged to lockingly engage said screw engaging bit member when said bit member is rotatably coupled to said bit locking assembly so as to prevent said bit member from moving out of rotatably coupled relation with said bit locking assembly;a manually engageable release structure disposed exteriorly of said housing structure and operatively connected to said releasable bit locking assembly; said releasable bit locking assembly being constructed and arranged such that, when said screw engaging bit member is in said rotatably coupled relation with said bit locking assembly, a user can manually engage and push said manually engageable actuating structure in a releasing direction so as to move said releasable bit locking assembly from (1) a releasably locked position wherein said bit locking structure lockingly engages said rotatable screw engaging bit member so as to prevent said bit member from moving out of said rotatably coupled relation to (2) a released position wherein said bit locking structure is moved out of said locking engagement to thereby allow said rotatable screw engaging bit member to be moved out of said rotatably coupled relation and replaced by another rotatable screw engaging bit member.
- 26. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 25, wherein said releasable bit locking assembly comprises:a mandrel providing said power source connecting portion, said mandrel providing a bit receiving opening opposite said connecting portion, said screw bit engaging member having a connectable end portion positioned and configured to be received with said bit member receiving opening when said bit member is in said rotatably coupled relation, said mandrel having a radially extending opening communicating with said bit member receiving opening; said bit locking structure being constructed and arranged to lockingly engage said connectable portion of said screw engaging bit member through said radially extending opening when said bit member is in said rotatably coupled relation.
- 27. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 26, wherein said bit locking structure is a spherical bit locking ball;said bit locking ball being disposed within said radially extending opening of said mandrel, said releasable bit locking assembly including an annular sleeve member providing a ball engaging surface, said rotatable screw engaging bit member having an annular groove extending circumferentially around said connectable portion, said annular groove being disposed adjacent said radially extending opening of said mandrel when said bit member is in said operative position thereof, said annular sleeve member being movable relative to said mandrel as said bit locking assembly is moved between said locked and released positions thereof, said annular sleeve member being constructed and arranged such that, when said bit member is rotatably coupled to said bit locking assembly and said bit locking assembly is being moved into said releasably locked position thereof, said ball engaging surface of said sleeve member engages said bit locking ball and moves said ball through said radially extending opening into locking engagement with said annular groove of said bit member so as to prevent said bit member from moving out of rotatably coupled relation with said bit locking assembly, said annular sleeve member being constructed and arranged such that, when said bit member is rotatably coupled to said bit locking assembly and said releasable bit locking assembly is being moved into said released position thereof, said bit locking ball is allowed to move of locking engagement with said annular groove so as to allow said bit member to be moved out of said rotatably coupled relation with said bit locking assembly.
- 28. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 27, wherein said bit locking assembly further comprises a biasing element disposed between said sleeve member and said mandrel,said biasing element being positioned and configured to bias said sleeve member in a locking direction such that said ball engaging surface engages said bit locking ball to thereby maintain said ball in locking engagement with said annular groove, said sleeve member being constructed and arranged such that moving said manually engageable release structure in said releasing direction moves said sleeve member against the bias of said biasing element so as to allow said locking ball to move out of said locking engagement with said annular groove.
- 29. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 28, wherein said bit locking assembly further comprises a bit release guide connected to said sleeve member,said housing structure having a release guide receiving opening formed therethrough, said bit release guide having a release structure connecting portion extending radially outwardly through said release guide receiving opening of said housing structure, said manually engageable release structure being connected to said release structure engaging portion and disposed exteriorly of said housing structure.
- 30. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 29, wherein said manually engageable release structure has a concave recess facing opposite said releasing direction to facilitate manual engagement and pushing of said release structure in said releasing direction.
- 31. A power operated screwdriving device according to claim 30, wherein said manually engageable release structure is disposed on top of said housing structure.
- 32. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 31, wherein said structure defining a drive track is a feeding assembly constructed and arranged to move a subsequent lead screw into said drive track after said screwdriving operation, the lead screw and the successive lead screw being releasably mounted on a collation.
- 33. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 23, wherein said housing structure is constructed and arranged to be releasably engaged with the rotary power source.
- 34. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 23, wherein said releasable bit locking assembly has a bit member receiving opening configured to receive said rotatable screw engaging bit member when said screw engaging bit member and said bit member receiving opening are properly aligned relative to one another;one of said releasable bit locking assembly and said screw engaging bit member having bit member aligning surfaces, said bit member aligning surfaces being configured such that said bit member aligning surfaces will engage the other of said releasable bit locking assembly and said rotatable screw engaging bit member as the bit member is being moved towards said bit member receiving opening so as to cause said screw engaging bit member to rotate relative to said bit member receiving opening until said bit member is properly aligned with said bit member receiving opening and allowed to move generally axially into said rotatably coupled relation with said releasable bit locking assembly.
- 35. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 34, wherein said one of said bit member and said releasable bit locking assembly is said bit locking assembly.
- 36. A power-operated screwdriving device according to claim 35, wherein said bit aligning surfaces of said bit locking assembly are adjacent said bit receiving opening,said bit member aligning surfaces extending helically with respect to said bit receiving opening such that, when said bit member is being moved into said operative position thereof, said helically extending bit aligning surfaces are positioned and configured to engage said releasable bit locking assembly as said bit member is being moved towards bit member receiving opening so as to cause said bit member to rotate relative to said bit member receiving opening until said bit member is properly aligned relative to said bit member receiving opening and allowed to be moved generally axially into said rotatably coupled relation with said releasable bit locking assembly.
- 37. A power-operated screwdriving device configured to be used with a supply of screws, said screwdriving device comprising:a housing structure; a rotary power source carried by said housing structure; structure defining a drive track constructed and arranged to receive a lead screw from the supply of screws; a rotatable screw engaging bit member constructed and arranged to be engaged with the lead screw from the supply of screws during a screwdriving operation wherein the lead screw is driven into a workpiece; a releasable bit locking assembly disposed in said housing and constructed and arranged to operatively connect said bit member to the rotary power source to enable the rotary power source to rotate said bit member during the screwdriving operation; said releasable bit locking assembly including bit locking structure constructed and arranged to lockingly engage said bit member; said rotatable screw engaging bit member being engageable with the lead screw and movable relative to said drive track such that rotation of said bit member and relative movement between said bit member and said drive track drives the lead screw into the workpiece during the screwdriving operation; a manually engageable release structure disposed exteriorly of said housing structure and operatively connected to said releasable bit locking assembly; said release structure and said bit locking assembly being constructed and arranged such that manually moving said release structure in a bit releasing movement moves said releasable bit locking assembly between (1) a releasably locked position wherein said bit locking structure lockingly engages said bit member and (2) a released position wherein said bit locking structure is moved out of said locking engagement to thereby allow said bit member to be removed and replaced by another rotatable screw engaging bit member.
- 38. A power-operated screwdriving device configured to be used with a supply of screws, said screwdriving device comprising:a housing structure; a rotary power source carried by said housing structure; structure defining a drive track constructed and arranged to receive a lead screw from the supply of screws; an elongated, rotatable screw engaging bit member constructed and arranged to be engaged with the lead screw from the supply of screws during a screwdriving operation wherein the lead screw is driven into a workpiece, said bit member being engageable with the lead screw and movable relative to said drive track such that rotation of said bit member and relative movement between said drive track and said bit member drives the lead screw into the workpiece during the screwdriving operation; a releasable bit locking assembly operatively connected to said rotary power source such that activation of said rotary power source affects rotation of said bit locking assembly, said releaseable bit locking assembly being constructed and arranged to have said bit member removably coupled thereto so as to operatively connect said bit member to the rotary power source in releaseably locked relation; said releasable bit locking assembly having a plurality of bit member engaging surfaces configured such that when said bit member is removably coupled with said bit locking assembly said bit member engaging surfaces engage associated surfaces of said bit member to enable said releasable bit locking assembly to rotatably drive said bit member when said rotary power source is activated to affect rotation of said bit locking assembly; at least one of said releasable bit locking assembly and said bit member having bit member aligning surfaces, said bit member aligning surfaces being positioned and configured such that forced axial engagement of said bit member with said releasable bit locking assembly causes relative rotation between said screw engaging bit member and said releasable bit locking assembly until said bit member engaging surfaces are properly aligned with said associated surfaces of said bit member to facilitate properly aligned coupling of said bit member to said bit locking assembly.
