Claims
- 1. A power amplifier module, comprising:
a power amplifier having a power setting input; an amplitude modulator having a power supply input, a modulation input, and a power setting output coupled to the power setting input of said power amplifier; and a DC/DC converter having a main power supply input and an output selectively coupled to the power supply input of the amplitude modulator.
- 2. The power amplifier module of claim 1 wherein the DC/DC converter comprises a switch-mode power supply.
- 3. The power amplifier module of claim 2 wherein during operation, the output of the switch-mode power supply is coupled to the power supply input of the amplitude modulator for a first predetermined power range, but is decoupled from the amplitude modulator during a second predetermined power range.
- 4. The power amplifier module of claim 3 wherein during the second predetermined power range, the power supply input of the amplitude modulator is coupled to a main power supply.
- 5. The power amplifier module of claim 1 wherein the DC/DC converter is operable to produce an output voltage having a value greater, by a predetermined voltage differential, than an envelope voltage applied to the power setting input of the power amplifier.
- 6. The power amplifier module of claim 5 wherein the predetermined voltage differential is dropped across an active device of the amplitude modulator, and has a value at least as large as required to maintain operation of the active device in its active region.
- 7. The power amplifier module of claim 1 wherein the power amplifier comprises a multistage power amplifier.
- 8. The power amplifier module of claim 7 wherein the power setting input is coupled to a power setting input of at least an output stage of the multistage power amplifier.
- 9. The power amplifier module of claim 8 wherein an input stage of the multistage amplifier has a power setting input configured to receive a constant voltage.
- 10. A method of power amplifier envelope modulation, comprising:
applying an envelope modulation signal to an envelope modulation input of a modulator; selectively coupling an output voltage of a DC/DC converter to a power supply input of the modulator; generating an envelope voltage using the modulator; and applying the generated envelope voltage to a power setting input of a power amplifier.
- 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising applying a phase modulated carrier signal to a phase modulation input of the power amplifier.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein the DC/DC converter comprises a switch-mode power supply.
- 13. The method of claim 12, further comprising detecting when an active device of the modulator saturates.
- 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising adjusting the output voltage of the switch-mode power supply to increase power efficiency.
- 15. The method of claim 10 wherein the power amplifier comprises a multistage power amplifier.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein applying the generated envelope voltage to a power setting input of a power amplifier comprises applying the generated envelope voltage to a power setting input of at least an output stage of the multistage power amplifier.
