Claims
- 1. An orbital polisher having a pad with an axial bore extending through its center, the polisher comprising:
- a housing;
- a motor in the housing;
- a shaft rotatably driven by the motor about a rotational axis along which the shaft extends;
- an axial lining in the pad axial bore having an upper end and a lower end with a first axial predetermined distance therebetween;
- a counterweight assembly attached to the shaft for rotation therewith;
- a post on the counterweight assembly adjacent to and spaced from the rotational axis of the attached shaft to be connected to the pad for causing the pad to travel in an orbital path and having a length greater than the first axial predetermined distance;
- a detent ball mounted to the post for detenting and releasably securing the pad to the post adjacent the rotational axis, the ball being spaced from the bottom of the counterweight assembly along the length of the post a second axial predetermined distance slightly greater than the first axial predetermined distance for allowing the ball to engage the lower end of the axial lining; and
- biasing means between the post and ball for urging a portion of the ball in a first radial direction relative to the shaft a first radial predetermined distance and permitting the ball portion to move in a second radial direction opposite to the first radial direction under a predetermined force applied to the ball portion by inserting the post in the axial lining and to rebound in the first direction to substantially the first radial predetermined distance when the predetermined force is removed with the ball engaging the axial lining lower end and the bottom of the counterweight situated adjacent the axial lining upper end to tightly secure the pad onto the post for orbital movement therewith.
- 2. The orbital polisher of claim 1 wherein the axial lining includes an intermediate circumferential groove between the axial lining upper and lower ends capable of capturing the ball portion as it is urged in the first radial direction with the predetermined force removed to limit unintentional sliding of the post through the axial lining from the lower end to the upper end thereof providing for substantially fail-safe operation of the polisher with the pad secured on the post.
- 3. The orbital polisher of claim 1 wherein the post has a circular shape in cross-section and a predetermined radius where with the ball portion at the first radial predetermined distance the ball portion extends beyond the predetermined post radius and application of the predetermined force causes the ball to move radially inwardly to a position flush with the post where the ball portion does not extend beyond the predetermined post radius.
- 4. The orbital polisher of claim 1 wherein the post includes a recess configured to receive the ball therein and the biasing means comprises a plastic backing attached in the recess to which the ball is mounted.
- 5. The orbital polisher of claim 4 wherein the plastic backing comprises a strip of polyurethane plastic.
