Claims
- 1. A two-stage fuel pump for aircraft turbine engine applications comprising:
- a housing having a pump drive shaft mounted for rotation about its axis within said housing,
- a vane pump stage that includes a rotor coupled to said shaft for continuous rotation within said housing and having a plurality of radially extending peripheral slots, a plurality of vanes individually slidably disposed in said slots, means forming a cam ring within said housing surrounding said rotor and having a radially inwardly directed surface forming a vane track and at least one fluid pressure cavity between said surface and said rotor, and vane pump fluid inlet means and outlet means in said housing,
- a centrifugal pump stage that includes an impeller coupled to said shaft for continuous rotation within said housing and having a circumferential array of radially extending passages formed therein, and means for continuously feeding fluid from said vane pump outlet means to the radially inner ends of said impeller passages,
- a pump fluid inlet in said housing including means for feeding inlet fluid to said vane pump fluid inlet means, and
- a pump fluid outlet including means in said housing for receiving outlet fluid at elevated pressure from the radially outer ends of said impeller passages,
- both said vane pump stage and said centrifugal pump stage being operable in all phases of operation of said two-stage pump to pump fluid from said fluid inlet through said vane pump and then through said centrifugal pump to said fluid outlet such that all fluid pumped by said two-stage pump passes through both said vane pump stage and said centrifugal pump stage.
- 2. The pump set forth in claim 1 further comprising means mounting said rotor for rotation within said housing about an axis parallel to and offset from said shaft axis, and gear drive means coupling said rotor to said shaft.
- 3. The pump set forth in claim 9 wherein said vane pump fluid inlet means comprises at least one inlet passage extending radially from said cavity, and wherein said pump fluid inlet includes an axial inlet passage in said housing aligned with said shaft, a cylindrical filter coaxially surrounding said inlet passage, and a chamber externally surrounding said filter for receiving filtered inlet fluid flowing radially through said filter,
- said at least one inlet passage opening radially into said chamber.
- 4. The pump set forth in claim 2 wherein said vane pump stage includes pressure plate means at axially opposed sides of said rotor, said rotor being rotatably journalled on said pressure plate means.
- 5. The pump set forth in claim 4 further comprising a plurality of fluid chambers in said rotor at radially inner ends of associated said slots, and passage means in said housing for feeding fluid from said pump outlet to said chambers.
- 6. The pump set forth in claim 5 wherein said passage means includes a first passage extending axially into said rotor and a plurality of radially extending second passages individually connecting said first passage to a corresponding said chamber.
- 7. The pump set forth in claim 1 wherein said vane pump fluid inlet and outlet means comprise:
- means for receiving hydraulic fluid and directing such fluid to said cavity through a first cavity inlet port adjacent to one circumferential edge of said cavity, a fluid outlet port adjacent to an opposing circumferential edge of said cavity, a second fluid inlet port opening into said cavity between said first inlet port and said outlet port, separation between said vanes being sufficient to seal said ports from each other, and means for feeding hydraulic fluid under pressure from said outlet port to said second inlet port.
- 8. The pump set forth in claim 7 wherein said fluid inlet and outlet means further comprise a pressurization valve having a predetermined pressure threshold for permitting flow of fluid therethrough, and means for feeding fluid from said outlet port to said first inlet port through said pressurization valve and thereby limiting fluid pressure at said outlet port and said second inlet port.
- 9. The pump set forth in claim 1 wherein said means for feeding fluid from said vane pump outlet means to said radially inner ends of said impeller passages comprises a spiral inducer rotatable with said impeller, and means for feeding fluid from said vane pump outlet means to an end of said inducer spaced form said impeller.
- 10. The pump set forth in claim 9 wherein said inducer and said impeller are of one-piece integral construction.
- 11. The pump set forth in claim 9 wherein said means for feeding fluid from said vane pump outlet means to said inducer end comprises an injector including a circumferential array of injector passages in said housing for feeding fluid to said inducer end, and a circumferential array of nozzle orifices aligned with said injector passages and receiving fluid from said pump fluid outlet.
