- 2. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the top end plug is clamped to the top end of the cylinder by a cap that screws onto the cylinder.
- 3. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 2, wherein the bolt and firing pin assembly are pivotally attached to the cap.
- 4. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 3, wherein the bolt and firing pin assembly include a trigger pivotally attached to the cap.
- 5. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 3, wherein the bolt includes a channel with plastic cartridge holder grooves.
- 6. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the gas expansion chamber includes a primary chamber 64 in the head end plug.
- 7. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 6, wherein the gas expansion chamber includes an inner chamber in the piston and a valve seat and gas metering piston pin between the primary chamber and the inner chamber.
- 8. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 6, wherein the gas expansion chamber includes a head end chamber in the cylinder between the top end plug and the piston.
- 9. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 8, including a gas metering passage between a plug bottom surface and a piston upper end surface.
- 10. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the shear plate includes a lance portion that leads during a pipe cutting stroke.
- 11. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 10, wherein the lance portion is offset to one side of the shear plate.
- 12. A pipe cutter, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the shear housing includes an upper housing portion and a lower housing portion, the pipe bore is divided into two bore halves, and a housing hinge and a lock assembly connect the lower housing portion to the upper housing portion.
- 13. A pipe flaring tool comprising:
a cylinder with a top end and a rod end; a piston slidably mounted in the cylinder; a top end plug with a crimped cartridge bore on the top end of the cylinder; a bolt and firing pin assembly attached to the cylinder top end; a gas expansion chamber in the cylinder between the head end plug and the piston and connected to the crimped cartridge bore; a male flaring surface carried by a rod end of the piston and movable with the piston; and a pipe clamp assembly with a pipe passage surrounded by a female flaring surface and wherein the female flaring surface is in axial alignment with the male flaring surface and axially fixed relative to the cylinder.
- 14. A pipe flaring tool as set forth in claim 13 wherein the top end plug is clamped to the top end of the cylinder by a cap that screws onto the cylinder.
- 15. A pipe flaring tool, as set forth in claim 14, wherein the bolt and firing pin assembly are pivotally attached to the cap.
- 16. A pipe flaring tool, as set forth in claim 15, including a link pivotally attached to the firing pin assembly in a position to hold a firing pin out of contact with crimped cartridges in the crimped cartridge bore.
- 17. A pipe flaring tool, as set forth in claim 13 wherein the pipe clamp assembly includes a pipe clamp holder with a pipe clamp passage attached to the cylinder 22 and a pipe clamp assembly with the female flaring surface mounted in the pipe clamp passage during pipe flaring operations.
- 18. A pipe flaring tool, as set forth in claim 13 wherein the pipe clamp assembly includes a first flaring block fixed to the cylinder, a second flaring block pivotally attached to the first flaring block, a flaring block clamp operable to clamp the second flaring block to the first flaring block, and the pipe passage is divided along a line of contact between the first flaring block and the second flaring block.
- 19. A pipe flaring tool, as set forth in claim 18 wherein the pipe passage includes a first flaring die half mounted on the first flaring block, a second flaring die half mounted on the second flaring block, the female flaring surface is on the first flaring die half and the second flaring die half, and wherein the first flaring die half and second flaring die half are changed to accommodate different pipe diameters.
- 20. A method forming a pipe with a flared pipe coupling comprising:
positioning the pipe in a pipe bore through a pipe shear housing; releasing a striker to strike a crimped cartridge and force a shear plate through the pipe and cut the pipe to the desired length; clamping the cut pipe in the pipe clamp assembly of a pipe flaring tool in a measured axial position and with the cut pipe in axial alignment with a male flaring surface; releasing a firing pin of a pipe flaring tool to strike a crimped cartridge, force the male flaring surface toward a female flaring surface on the pipe clamp assembly and flare an end of the cut pipe between the male flaring surface and the female flaring surface; and releasing the cut pipe with a flared end from the pipe clamp assembly.
