Claims
- 1. A post-tensioned pole system for supporting a load, said system comprising:
a pole segment having a hollow interior portion; and at least one strand coupled to opposite ends of said pole segment and extending within said hollow interior portion, wherein said strand is placed in tension so that said pole segment is capable of withstanding forces imposed by the load and other external forces.
- 2. The pole system of claim 1, wherein said pole segment has a radially symmetric cross-section.
- 3. The pole system of claim 2, wherein said pole segment has a hexagonal cross-section.
- 4. The pole system of claim 1, wherein said pole segment is tapered.
- 5. The pole system of claim 1, wherein one end of said pole segment has a thickened portion.
- 6. The pole system of claim 1, wherein said pole segment has apertures formed in said thickened portion, and wherein strands extend through said apertures.
- 7. The pole system of claim 1, wherein said hollow interior portion has concrete formed therein after said strands are placed in tension.
- 8. A post-tensioned pole system for supporting a load, said system comprising:
first and second pole segments each having top and bottom ends, said first and second pole segments having a cavity formed therein; a connector adapted to couple said top end of said first pole segment with said bottom end of said second pole segment; and a first strand coupled to first and second pole segments, said first strand extending within said cavity of said first and second pole segments, wherein said first strand is placed in tension so that said first and second pole segments are capable of withstanding forces imposed by the load and other external forces.
- 9. The pole system of claim 8, wherein said first and second pole segments have a radially symmetric cross-section.
- 10. The pole system of claim 9, wherein said first and second pole segments have a hexagonal cross-section.
- 11. The pole system of claim 8, wherein said first and second pole segments are tapered.
- 12. The pole system of claim 8, wherein said top portion of said first pole segment includes a thickened portion.
- 13. The pole system of claim 12, wherein at least one aperture is formed in said thickened portion, and wherein said first strand extends through said aperture.
- 14. The pole system of claim 8, further comprising a second strand coupled with said first pole segment and said connector.
- 15. The pole system of claim 14, further including an anchor coupling said second strand to said connector.
- 16. The pole system of claim 15, wherein said anchor includes:
a cylinder; a clasping mechanism slidably received within said cylinder; a pipe coupled to said cylinder; and a spring mounted in said pipe, wherein said clasping mechanism is releasably coupled to said second strand, and wherein said spring retains said clasping mechanism within said cylinder.
- 17. The pole system of claim 8, wherein said connector includes an upper piece mounted to said second pole segment, and a lower piece mounted to said first pole segment.
- 18. The pole system of claim 17, wherein said lower piece includes:
a base plate coupled to said first pole segment; and a cover plate coupled to said base plate and having an outer edge that is adapted to interlock with an inner edge of said upper piece.
- 19. The pole system of claim 17, wherein said upper piece includes
a channel band coupled to said second pole segment; and a brace being disposed within said channel band.
- 20. The pole system of claim 8, wherein at least one of first and second pole segments is approximately 30 feet in height.
- 21. A pole system for supporting a load, said system comprising:
first and second pole segments each having top and bottom portions, said first and second pole segments having a hollow interior portion formed therein; means for connecting said top portion of said first with said bottom portion of second pole segment; a first strand coupled between said first and second pole segments, said first strand positioned within said hollow portion of said first and second pole segments; and means for tensioning said first strand, wherein said first and second pole segments are post-tensioned and capable of withstanding forces imposed by the supporting load and other external forces.
- 22. The pole system of claim 21, further comprising:
a second strand; means for coupling said second strand with said first pole segment and said connecting means; and means for tensioning said second strand.
- 23. The pole system of claim 21, wherein said top portion of said first pole segment includes a thickened portion.
- 24. The pole system of claim 23, further comparing means for allowing said first strand to extend through said thickened portion.
- 25. The pole system of claim 21, wherein said hollow interior portion extends along a longitudinal axis of said first and second pole segments.
- 26. A device for connecting first and second pole segments, wherein said first and second pole segments are post-tensioned through the use of at least one strand, said first and second pole segments including top and bottom portions, said device comprising:
a lower piece mounted to the top portion of the first pole segment; and an upper piece mounted to the bottom portion of the second pole segment, wherein said upper piece interlocks with a portion of said lower piece so that the first pole segment is coupled to the second pole segment.
- 27. The device of claim 26, wherein said lower and upper pieces are mounted to the first and second pole segments respectively by at least one stud.
- 28. The device of claim 26, wherein said lower piece has holes formed therein adapted to allow the strands to pass therethrough.
- 29. The device of claim 26, wherein said lower piece includes:
a base plate having a support surface; and a cover plate having an outer edge and coupled with a portion of said support surface.
- 30. The device of claim 29, wherein said upper piece includes a channel band having an inner edge that extends around said outer edge, wherein channel band rests on said support surface and said inner and outer edges are adapted to interlock with one another.
- 31. A device for anchoring a strand to a connector, wherein the connector is used to couple first and second pole segments in a post-tensioned pole system, said device comprising:
a cylinder; a clasping mechanism slidably disposed within said cylinder; a pipe coupled to said cylinder having a hollow interior portion; and a spring mounted in said interior portion of said pipe, wherein said spring biases said clasping mechanism toward the connector so at least a portion of said clasping mechanism is retained within said cylinder.
- 32. The device of claim 31, wherein said clasping mechanism includes a pair of jaws that form a passageway adapted to allow the strand to pass therethrough.
- 33. The device of claim 32, wherein said jaws have teeth that extend within said passageway.
- 34. A device for precasting a pole segment for use in a post-tensioned pole system, said device includes:
an external mold including a pair of top pieces and a bottom piece, said top pieces being hingedly coupled said bottom piece to form a channel; and an internal mold adapted to be placed within said channel; wherein said external mold shapes an outer surface of the pole segment and said internal mold shapes an interior surface of the pole segment when a material is placed between external and internal molds.
- 35. The device of claim 34, further including a yoke coupled between said top pieces.
- 36. The device of claim 34, further including an adjustable holding mechanism that extends through said external mold and braces said internal mold to hold said internal mold in position within said channel.
- 37. The device of claim 34, wherein said internal mold includes top and bottom pieces.
- 38. The device of claim 37, wherein said top piece is tapered to form a thickened portion in the pole segment.
- 39. The device of claim 34, further including at least one tube coupled to said tapered portion of said internal mold.
- 40. A method for forming a pole segment used in a post-tensioned pole system, said method comprising:
providing a external form having a pair of top pieces and a bottom piece, said top pieces being hingedly coupled to said bottom piece to form a channel; providing at least one adjustable holding mechanism coupled to said external form; providing an internal form; placing said internal form within said channel; adjusting said holding mechanism so that said internal form is secured within said channel; placing a concrete mixture between said external and internal forms to form the pole segment.
- 41. The method of claim 40, wherein said internal form is tapered to form a thickened portion of the pole segment.
- 42. The method of claim 41, further including:
providing at least one tube; and coupling said tube to said tapered portion of said internal mold prior to placing concrete mixture between said external and internal forms to create an aperture in the thickness portion of the pole segment.
- 43. A method for constructing a segmented post-tensioned pole system, said method comprising:
providing first and second pole segments each having top and bottom ends, said first and second pole segments having hollow interior portions; providing a connector having upper and lower pieces, said upper piece being mounted to said bottom end of said second pole, and said lower piece being mounted to said top end of said first pole segment; interlocking said upper and lower pieces of said connector; providing a first strand; coupling said first strand to said top end of said second pole segment; extending said first strand within said hollow interior portions of said first and second pole segments; placing said first strand in tension; coupling said first strand to said bottom end of said first pole segment to form a post-tensioned the pole system.
- 44. The method of claim 43, wherein said top end of said first pole segment includes a thickened portion, and wherein said first strand extends through said thickened portion.
- 45. The method of claim 43, further including:
providing for a second strand; coupling said second strand to said connector; extending said second strand in said hollow interior portion of said first pole segment; placing said second strand in tension; and coupling sais second strand to said bottom end of said first pole segment.
- 46. The method of claim 45, wherein said second strand is coupled to said connector by an anchor.
- 47. The method of claim 46, wherein said top end of said first pole segment includes a thickened portion, and wherein said second strand extends through said thickened portion.
- 48. The method of claim 43, further including pouring concrete within said hollow interior portion of said first and second pole segments.
