Claims
- 1. An amorphous precipitated silica composition of low structure for use in dentifrice formulations, said silica composition comprising:
- a BET surface area of approximately 50 to 250 m.sup.2 /g;
- an oil absorption of approximately 60 to 120 cc/100 g;
- a mercury intrusion void volume of 1.0 to 4.0 cc/g;
- a 5% aqueous slurry pH of approximately 4.0 to 8.5;
- a reactor slurry average particle size, in terms of median value, of approximately 10 to 50 .mu.m;
- a 40% slurry viscosity build of less than approximately 20,000 cetipoise;
- a 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value of approximately 2.5 to 20 mg loss/100,000
- wherein when the silica composition is incorporated into a suitable dentifrice formulation, the dentifrice formulation has a mPCR of about 103 to 124 and an RDA of about 88 to 102; and
- wherein said silica is less abrasive than a silica having substantially equivalent physical properties which has been prepared without shearing and which has reactor slurry average particle size greater than approximately 10 to 50 .mu.m.
- 2. The precipitated silica composition of claim 1, wherein the 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value is approximately 2.5 to 8.0 mg loss/100,000 rev.
- 3. The precipitated silica composition of claim 1, wherein the 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value is approximately 3.0 to 6.0 mg loss/100,000 rev.
- 4. The precipitated silica composition of claim 1, wherein the 40% slurry viscosity build is less than approximately 12,000 centipoise.
- 5. The precipitated silica composition of claim 1, wherein the 40% slurry viscosity build is less than approximately 7,000 centipoise.
- 6. The precipitated silica composition of claim 1, wherein the silica composition has a reactor slurry average particle size (50%) of approximately 10 to 20 .mu.m.
- 7. The precipitated silica composition of claim 1, wherein the silica composition is produced by a process wherein the silica composition is sheared at a shear rate of at least 0.75.
- 8. The precipitated silica composition of claim 6, wherein the silica composition has a 40% slurry viscosity build of less than approximately 12,000 centipoise.
- 9. The precipitated silica composition of claim 6, wherein the silica composition has a 40% slurry viscosity build of less than approximately 7,000 centipoise.
- 10. The precipitated silica composition of claim 6, wherein the silica composition has a 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value of approximately 2.5 to 8.0 mg loss/100,000 rev.
- 11. The precipitated silica composition of claim 6, wherein the silica composition has a 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value of approximately 3.0 to 6.0 mg loss/100,000 rev.
- 12. The precipitated silica composition of claim 6, wherein the silica composition is produced by a process wherein the silica composition is sheared at a shear rate of at least 0.75.
- 13. An amorphous precipitated silica composition of low structure for use in dentifrice formulations, said silica composition comprising:
- a BET surface area of approximately 50 to 250 m.sup.2 /g;
- an oil absorption of approximately 60 to 120 cc/100 g;
- a mercury intrusion void volume of 1.0 to 4.0 cc/g;
- a 5% aqueous slurry pH of approximately 4.0 to 8.5;
- a reactor slurry average particle size, in terms of median value, of approximately 10 to 50 .mu.m;
- a 40% slurry viscosity build of less than approximatety 20.000 centipoise;
- a 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value of approximately 2.5 to 20 mg loss/100.000 rev;
- wherein when the silica composition is incorporated into a suitable dentifrice composition, the dentifrice composition has a rnPCR to RDA ratio grater than about 1.1; and
- wherein said silica is less abrasive than a silica having substantially equivalent physical properties which has been prepared without shearing and which has reactor slurry average particle size greater than approximately 10 to 50 .mu.m.
- 14. The precipitated silica composition of claim 13, wherein the 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value is approximately 2.5 to 8.0 mg loss/100,000 rev.
- 15. The precipitated silica composition of claim 13, wherein the 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value is approximately 3.0 to 6.0 mg loss/100,000 rev.
- 16. The precipitated silica composition of claim 13, wherein the 40% slurry viscosity build is less than approximately 12,000 centipoise.
- 17. The precipitated silica composition of claim 13, wherein the 40% slurry viscosity build is less than approximately 7,000 centipoise.
- 18. The precipitated silica composition of claim 13, wherein the silica composition has a reactor slurry average particle size (50%) of approximately 10 to 20 .mu.m.
- 19. The precipitated silica composition of claim 13, wherein the silica composition is produced by a process wherein the silica is sheared at a shear rate of at least 0.75.
- 20. The precipitated silica composition of claim 18, wherein the silica composition has a 40% slurry viscosity build of less than approximately 12,000 centipoise.
- 21. The precipitated silica composition of claim 18, wherein the silica composition has a 40% slurry viscosity build of less than approximately 7,000 centipoise.
- 22. The precipitated silica composition of claim 18, wherein the silica composition is produced by a process wherein the silica composition is sheared at a shear rate of at least 0.75.
- 23. The precipitated silica composition of claim 18, wherein the silica composition has a 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value of approximately 2.5 to 8.0 mg loss/100,000 rev.
- 24. The precipitated silica composition of claim 18, wherein the silica composition has a 10% Brass Einlehner abrasion value of approximately 3.0 to 6.0 mg loss/100,000 rev.
- 25. The precipitated silica composition of claim 18, wherein the silica composition is produced by a process wherein the silica is sheared at a shear rate of at least 0.75.
