Claims
- 1. A container blank retaining device for retaining container blanks for further processing, said retaining device comprising:
- positioning means for positioning a stack of blanks and maintaining the blanks in a retrievable position having a portion of the blanks accessible;
- restraining means for restraining the stack of blanks within said positioning means such that blanks from the stack of blanks can be sequentially removed from said positioning means; and
- means for creating a humid atmosphere about the stack of blanks for subjecting at least a portion of each of the blanks of the stack of blanks intended to form an upper periphery of a container to said humid atmosphere.
- 2. The retaining device as defined in claim 1, wherein the blanks are restrained in said positioning means for a predetermined time period.
- 3. The reining device as defined in claim 2, wherein said predetermined time period is 80 to 150 seconds.
- 4. The reining device as defined in claim 3, wherein :said range is 100 to 120 seconds.
- 5. The retaining device as defined in claim 1, wherein said humid atmosphere includes steam.
- 6. The retaining device as defined in claim 5, wherein said steam is mixed with air at a ratio in the range of 0.1 CFM steam per 1.0 CFM air to 1.0 CFM steam per 1.0 CFM air.
- 7. The retaining device as defined in claim 5, wherein said means for creating a humid atmosphere includes an injection means for directing said steam towards the blanks.
- 8. The retaining device as defined in claim 1, wherein said positioning means includes at least one bottom support and at least one lateral support for supporting the stack of blanks and a cover means for covering at least a position of the stack of blanks in said positioning means.
- 9. The retaining device as defined in claim 8, wherein said humid atmosphere includes steam.
- 10. The retaining device as defined in claim 9, wherein said means for creating a humid atmosphere includes an injection means for directing said steam towards the stack of blanks.
- 11. The retaining device as defined in claim 10, wherein said injection means includes at least one injection manifold positioned in said cover means, said injection manifold having a plurality of injection orifices for directing steam into contact with the stack of blanks.
- 12. The retaining device as defined in claim 1, wherein said container blanks of said stack of blanks are partially formed containers.
- 13. The retaining device as defined in claim 12, wherein said partially formed containers include tapered side walls and a substantially planar bottom wall.
- 14. A container blank retaining device for retaining a stack of container blanks for further processing, said retaining device comprising:
- a positioning means for positioning the stack of blanks such that a portion of the blanks of the stack of blanks for forming an upper periphery of a container is accessible;
- restraining means for restraining the stack of blanks within said positioning means; and
- means for creating a humid atmosphere about the stack of blanks for subjecting at least one predetermined segment of each of the blanks of the stack of blanks for forming the upper periphery of the container to said humid atmosphere.
- 15. The retaining device as defined in claim 14, wherein the blanks are restrained in said positioning means for a predetermined time period.
- 16. The retaining device as defined in claim 15, wherein said predetermined time period is 80 to 150 seconds.
- 17. The retaining device as defined in claim 16, wherein said range is 100 to 120 seconds.
- 18. The retaining device as defined in claim 14, wherein said humid atmosphere includes steam.
- 19. The retaining device as defined in claim 18, wherein said steam is mixed with air at a ratio in the range of 0.1 CFM steam per 1.0 CFM air to 1.0 CFM steam per 1.0 CFM air.
- 20. The retaining device as defined in claim 14, wherein said means for creating a humid atmosphere includes an injection means for directing said steam towards the blanks.
- 21. The retaining device as defined in claim 20, wherein said injection means includes at least one injection manifold positioned adjacent said at least one predetermined segment.
- 22. The retaining device as defined in claim 21, wherein said injection manifold has a longitudinal direction extending in a direction of movement of the stack of blanks.
- 23. The retaining device as defined in claim 22, including a plurality of injection manifolds, each injection manifold positioned adjacent a respective predetermined segment of the blank.
- 24. The retaining device as defined in claim 14, wherein said container blanks of said stack of blanks are partially formed containers.
- 25. The retaining device as defined in claim 24, wherein said partially formed containers include tapered side walls and a substantially planar bottom wall.
