Claims
- 1. A prefabricated wall panel for use with like panels in constructing the walls of a building, comprising:
- a body of insulating material having opposed top and bottom ends;
- interior and exterior corrugated metal sheets disposed on opposite major faces of said insulating body, and
- at least one fastener strip disposed between said interior metal sheet and said insulating body to provide strength at a selected point of attachment of the panel to support members, said fastener strip being disposed between spaced apart corrugated grooves in said interior metal sheet for holding said fastener strip in a predetermined position during fabrication of the panel whereby the location of said fastener strip can be identified from the exterior of the panel, and said fastener strip and said interior metal sheet extend beyond said exterior metal sheet and said insulating body at one of said ends of said insulating body to permit installation of a fastener through only said fastener strip and said interior metal sheet into a support member for said panel from the outside of the building.
- 2. The wall panel of claim 1 wherein:
- the panel includes a fastener strip fixed in place on the panel by a folded edge of said interior metal sheet.
- 3. The wall panel of claim 1 wherein:
- said insulating body is foamed in place between said metal sheets, and said corrugated grooves aid in holding said fastener strip in place until it is secured by the foam.
- 4. A prefabricated wall system having a plurality of panels contiguously arrayed in side-by-side, abutting, joint-defining relationship around the periphery of a building, each panel comprising:
- a body of insulating material;
- interior and exterior metal sheets disposed on opposite major faces of the insulating body;
- a leading edge along a first side of the panel characterized by extensions of said interior and exterior metal sheets beyond the edge of said insulating body, a generally C-shaped insulating member for mechanically trying said interior and exterior metal sheets together to enclose the edge of said panel, said extensions of said interior and exterior metal sheets being folded beyond said insulating body along said leading edge, said C-shaped member having a web portion bordering the edge of said insulating body and first and second flange portions extending from said web portion outwardly to form a channel for receiving the trailing edge of an adjacent panel, said first flange portion extending into the folded extension of said interior metal sheet, said second flange portion extending into the folded extension of said exterior metal sheet;
- a trailing edge along a second side of the panel formed to have a thickness such that said trailing edge is insertable in said channel of the leading edge of an adjacent panel of similar construction to form a joint therewith;
- wherein the trailing edge includes an inwardly extending flange portion of said interior metal sheet imbedded in said insulating body, and a fastener strip disposed in a folded edge portion of said interior metal sheet for anchoring a threaded fastener;
- said fastener strip comprising a separate elongated metal member of a thickness greater than the thickness of said interior metal sheet; and
- at least one self-drilling threaded fastener passing through the folded extension of said interior metal sheet of a first panel and into the fastener strip of a second panel to form a secure joint.
- 5. The system of claim 4 wherein said interior metal sheet has a corrugated groove forming a shoulder for positioning said C-shaped member along the leading edge of the panel.
- 6. The system of claim 4 wherein the second flange portion of said C-shaped member is sloped slightly to resiliently grip the trailing edge of an adjacent panel.
