Claims
- 1. A prefilled syringe, comprising:
- a tubular body having front and rear end portions and having adjacent compartments therein, each of said compartments having a separate substance therein, said front end portion being sealed and engageable with a needle for injection of the substances after they are mixed, and said rear end portion being sealed by a plunger having a push rod connectable therewith for axially sliding said plunger in said tubular body;
- a sealing means comprising a first bypass stopper for separating and sealing said adjacent compartments from each other, axially slidably disposed in said tubular body between said adjacent compartments, said sealing means being slidable in said tubular body in response to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body; and
- a bypass between said sealing means and said front end portion having an axial length along said tubular body, said bypass permitting one of the substances in one of said adjacent compartments to bypass said sealing means and be introduced into the other of said adjacent compartments;
- wherein said sealing means further comprises a second bypass stopper axially slidably disposed in said tubular body between said adjacent compartments separating and sealing said adjacent compartments from each other independently of said first bypass stopper, said first and second bypass stoppers being located adjacent to each other and between said bypass and said plunger, said first and second bypass stoppers each having an axial thickness such that the combined axial thickness of said first and second bypass stoppers is less than said axial length of said bypass such that, upon sliding of said plunger in said tubular body, said first and second bypass stoppers are slidable to said bypass so that one of the substances in one of said adjacent compartments can be introduced into the other of said adjacent compartments.
- 2. The prefilled syringe of claim 1, wherein the distance between said first and second bypass stoppers, prior to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body, is less than the axial thickness of one of said first and second bypass stoppers.
- 3. The prefilled syringe of claim 2, wherein said first and second bypass stoppers are spaced from each other prior to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body.
- 4. The prefilled syringe of claim 3, wherein each of said first and second bypass stoppers has a confronting end, said confronting ends confronting each other and defining a space therebetween prior to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body, and said space being empty.
- 5. The prefilled syringe of claim 1, wherein said first and second bypass stoppers confront each other prior to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body.
- 6. The prefilled syringe of claim 1, wherein one of said first and second bypass stoppers comprises a cylindrical surfaces having annular and bridging ribs located thereon and sealingly engaging said tubular body, said annular ribs having a space therebetween and said bridging ribs extending between said annular ribs and subdividing said space between said annular ribs.
- 7. The prefilled syringe of claim 1, wherein said
- plunger is sealably engaged in the end rear portion of the tubular body for driving the substances out of the front end portion for injection, the plunger comprising annular and bridging ribs and a cylindrical surface, each of said ribs lying on the cylindrical surface and sealingly engaging said tubular body, and said bridging ribs extending between said annular ribs whereby an area between the annular ribs is subdivided to prevent substance flow around the plunger between the annular ribs at the bypass.
- 8. A prefilled syringe, comprising:
- a tubular body having front and rear end portions and front and rear compartments, each of said compartments having a substance therein, said front end portion being sealed and engageable with a needle for injection of the substances after they are mixed, and said rear end portion being sealed by a plunger having a push rod connectable therewith for axially sliding said plunger in said tubular body;
- a bypass stopper axially slidably disposed in said tubular body between said front and rear compartments for separating and sealing said compartments from each other, said bypass stopper being slidable in said tubular body in response to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body and said bypass stopper having an axial thickness; and
- a bypass disposed between said bypass stopper and said front end portion of said tubular body having an axial length greater than said axial thickness of said stopper, said stopper being slidable to said bypass in response to sliding of said plunger and said bypass permitting one of the substances in one of said compartments to bypass said stopper to be introduced into the other said compartment, when said stopper is slid thereto;
- wherein said stopper comprises a cylindrical surface having annular ribs and bridging ribs located thereon and sealingly engaging said tubular body, said annular ribs having a space therebetween and said bridging ribs extending between said annular ribs and subdividing said space between said annular ribs.
- 9. The prefilled syringe of claim 8, wherein said annular ribs extend about said stopper at a right angle to the axis of said tubular body.
- 10. The prefilled syringe of claim 8, wherein said annular and bridging ribs extend at right angles to each other.
- 11. The prefilled syringe of claim 8, wherein said annular ribs include at least three annular ribs extending parallel to each other to define at least two spaces therebetween.
- 12. The prefilled syringe of claim 11, wherein said bridging ribs include at least four bridging ribs spaced equidistantly from each other in each of said spaces.
- 13. The prefilled syringe of claim 8, and further comprising a second bypass stopper axially slidably disposed in said tubular body between said front and rear compartments for separating and sealing said front and rear compartments from each other independently of the first bypass stopper, said first and second bypass stoppers being located adjacent to each other, said first and second bypass stoppers each having an axial thickness such that the combined axial thickness of said first and second bypass stoppers is less than said axial length of said bypass such that, upon sliding of said plunger in said tubular body, said first and second bypass stoppers are slidable to said bypass so that one of the substances in the one of said compartments can flow around both of said bypass stoppers at said bypass and be introduced into the other of said compartments.
- 14. A prefilled syringe, comprising:
- a tubular body having front and rear end portions and adjacent compartments therein, each of said compartments having a separate substance therein, said front end portion being sealed by a plug therein, said rear end portion being sealed by a plunger having a push rod connectable therewith for axially sliding said plunger in said tubular body, and said rear end portion having a fingergrip;
- a needle collar engageable with said front end portion of said tubular body and adapted to engage a needle for injection of the substances after the substances are mixed, said needle collar comprising a receptacle for receiving said plug upon a sufficient amount of axial sliding of said plunger;
- a sealing means comprising a first bypass stopper for separating and sealing said adjacent compartments from each other, axially slidably disposed in said tubular body between said adjacent compartments, said sealing means being slidable in said tubular body in response to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body; and
- a bypass between said sealing means and said front end portion having an axial length along said tubular body, said bypass being adapted to permit one of the substances in one of said adjacent compartments to bypass said sealing means and be introduced into the other of said adjacent compartments;
- wherein said sealing means further comprises a second bypass stopper axially slidably disposed in said tubular body between said adjacent compartments for separating and sealing said adjacent compartments from each other independently of said first bypass stopper, said first and second bypass stoppers being located adjacent to each other, and said first and second bypass stoppers each having an axial thickness such that the combined axial thickness of said first and second bypass stoppers is less than said axial length of said bypass such that, upon sliding of said plunger in said tubular body, said first and second bypass stoppers are slidable to said bypass so that one of the substances in the one of said adjacent compartments can flow around both of said bypass stoppers at said bypass and be introduced into the other of said adjacent compartments; and
- wherein each of said bypass stoppers comprises a cylindrical surface having annular and bridging ribs located thereon and sealingly engaging said tubular body, said annual ribs having a space therebetween and said bridging ribs extending between said annual ribs and subdividing said space between said annular ribs.
- 15. The prefilled syringe of claim 14, wherein said needle collar further comprises a passage about said receptacle for conveying the mixed substances around the plug to a needle for injection.
- 16. A syringe prefilled with a first substance and a second substance to be mixed in the syringe, comprising:
- a syringe body comprising a needle end engageable with a needle for injection of the substances, a plunger end having a plunger for driving the substances out of the needle end for injection, and a bypass between the ends, the bypass having an axial length, and the syringe body including the first and second substances; and
- a pair of stoppers sealably engaged in the syringe body and disposed between the bypass and the plunger end prior to mixing of the substances such that the substances are stored separately from each other prior to mixing, each of the stoppers having a stopper confronting end and a substance confronting end, the stopper confronting ends directly confronting each other and the substance confronting ends facing away from each other, each of the substance confronting ends directly confronting one of the substances prior to mixing of the substances, the stoppers sealing the syringe body independently of each other, each of the stoppers having an axial thickness, and the combined thickness of the stoppers being less than the axial length of the bypass such that one of the substances can flow around both of the stoppers at the bypass when the substances are mixed.
- 17. A syringe prefilled with a carrier substance and a drug substance to be mixed in the syringe, comprising:
- a syringe body comprising a needle end engageable with a needle for injection of the substances, a plunger end having a plunger for driving the substances out of the needle end for injection, and a bypass between the ends, the bypass having an axial length; and
- a sealing arrangement sealably engaged in the syringe body and disposed between the bypass and the plunger end prior to mixing of the substances such that the substances are stored separately from each other, the sealing arrangement including a stopper and a minimizing means between the stopper and the bypass for minimizing the exchange of moisture between the stopper and a portion of the syringe body between the stopper and the needle end, the stopper confronting one of the substances and the minimizing means confronting the other substance prior to mixing of the substances, the stopper and minimizing means being adjacent, and the sealing arrangement having an axial length less than the axial length of the bypass such that one of the substances can flow around the sealing arrangement at the bypass when the substances are mixed.
- 18. A syringe prefilled with a carrier substance and a drug substance to be mixed in the syringe, comprising:
- a syringe body comprising a needle end engageable with a needle for injection of the substances, a plunger end having a plunger for driving the substances out of the needle end for injection, and a bypass between the ends; and
- a stopper sealably engaged in the syringe body and disposed between the bypass and the plunger end prior to mixing of the substances such that the substances are stored separately from each other prior to mixing, the stopper comprising a cylindrical surface having annular and bridging ribs lying thereon, each of the ribs sealingly engaging the syringe body, the annular ribs having a spacing therebetween and the bridging ribs extending between the annular ribs so as to subdivide the spacing between the annular ribs to limit annular flow of one of the substances around the stopper at the bypass.
- 19. A syringe prefilled with a pair of substances, comprising:
- a syringe body comprising a needle end engageable with a needle for injection of the substances, a plunger end having a plunger for driving the substances out of the needle end for injection, and a pair of adjacent compartments between the ends, one of the compartments containing one of the substances and the other compartment containing the other substance; and
- a pair of stoppers sealingly engaged in the syringe body between the adjacent compartments such that the substances are stored separately from each other, each of the stoppers having a stopper confronting end and a substance confronting end, the stopper confronting ends directly confronting each other with no liquid or solid therebetween and the substance confronting ends facing away from each other, each of the substance confronting ends confronting one of the substances prior to mixing of the substances, and the stoppers sealing the syringe body independently of each other.
- 20. A syringe prefilled with a pair of substances, comprising:
- a syringe body comprising a needle end engageable with a needle for injection of the substances, a plunger end having a plunger for driving the substances out of the needle end for injection, and a pair of compartments between the ends, one of the compartments containing one of the substances and the other compartment containing the other substance; and
- a pair of stoppers sealingly engaged in the syringe body between the compartments such that the substances are stored separately from each other, each of the stoppers having an empty space confronting end and a substance confronting end, the empty space confronting ends facing toward each other with no liquid or solid therebetween and the substance confronting ends facing away from each other, each of the empty space confronting ends confronting an empty space in the syringe body, each of the substance confronting ends confronting one of the substances, and the stoppers sealing the syringe body independently of each other.
- 21. A prefilled syringe comprising:
- a tubular body having front and rear end portions and having adjacent compartments therein, each of said compartments having a separate substance therein, said front end portion being sealed and engageable with a needle for injection of the substances after they are mixed, and said rear end portion being engageable with a plunger having a push rod connectable therewith for axially sliding said plunger in said tubular body;
- a sealing means comprising a first bypass stopper for separating and sealing said adjacent compartments from each other, axially slidably disposed in said tubular body between said adjacent compartments, said sealing means being slidable in said tubular body in response to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body; and
- a bypass between said sealing means and said front end portion having an axial length along said tubular body, said bypass permitting one of the substances in one of said adjacent compartments to bypass said sealing means and be introduced into the other of said adjacent compartments;
- wherein said sealing means further comprises a second bypass stopper axially slidably disposed in said tubular body between said adjacent compartments separating and sealing said adjacent compartments from each other independently of said first bypass stopper, said first and second bypass stoppers being located adjacent to each other and between the bypass and the plunger, said first and second bypass stoppers each having an axial thickness such that, upon sliding of said plunger in said tubular body, said first and second bypass stoppers are slidable to said bypass so that one of the substances in one of said adjacent compartments can be introduced into the other of said adjacent compartments;
- wherein said first and second bypass stoppers further have a space therebetween prior to sliding of said plunger in said tubular body, the distance between the stoppers defining said space being less than the axial thickness of one of said first and second bypass stoppers, the space being empty; and
- wherein each of the stoppers still further comprises annular and bridging ribs and a cylindrical surface, each of said ribs lying on the cylindrical surface and sealingly engaging said tubular body, and said bridging ribs extending between said annular ribs whereby an area between the annular ribs is subdivided to prevent substance flow around the stopper between the annular ribs at the bypass.
- 22. A prefilled syringe body, comprising:
- a tubular body having front and rear end portions and having first and second adjacent compartments therein, said front end portion being sealed and engageable with a needle, and said rear end portion being sealed by a plunger engageable with a push rod;
- a first substance disposed in a first of said adjacent compartments and a second substance disposed in a second of said adjacent compartments;
- a bypass in said tubular body in communication with one of said first and second adjacent compartments; and
- first and second bypass stoppers axially slidably disposed in said tubular body separating and sealing said first and second adjacent compartments from each other, said first and second bypass stoppers having no liquid or solid therebetween and a cumulative axial length less than the axial length of said bypass, and being located between said bypass and the other of said first and second adjacent compartments.
- 23. A prefilled syringe body, comprising:
- a tubular body having front and rear end portions and having first and second adjacent compartments therein, said front end portion being sealed and engageable with a needle, and said rear end portion being sealed by a plunger engageable with a push rod;
- a first substance disposed in a first of said adjacent compartments and a second substance disposed in a second of said adjacent compartments;
- a bypass in said tubular body in communication with one of said first and second adjacent compartments; and
- at least one bypass stopper axially slidably disposed in said tubular body separating and sealing said first and second adjacent compartments from each other, said at least one bypass stopper being located between said bypass and the other of said first and second compartments, and said at least one bypass stopper having at least two annular ribs thereon engaging said tubular body, a space between said at least two annular ribs and bridging ribs extending between said annular ribs and annularly subdividing said space.
- 24. A prefilled syringe body, comprising:
- a tubular body having front and rear end portions and having first and second adjacent compartments therein, said front end portion being sealed and engageable with a needle, and said rear end portion being sealed by a plunger engageable with a push rod;
- a first substance disposed in a first of said adjacent compartments and a second substance disposed in a second of said adjacent compartments;
- a bypass in said tubular body in communication with one of said first and second adjacent compartments; and
- a sealing means for separating and sealing said first and second adjacent compartments from each other, said sealing means being located in said tubular body between said bypass and the other of said first and second adjacent compartments, and said sealing means comprising a minimizing means for minimizing the emanation of moisture from said sealing means.
- 25. A syringe prefilled with a first substance and a second substance to be mixed in the syringe, comprising:
- a syringe body comprising a needle end engageable with a needle for injection of the substances, a plunger end, and a bypass between the ends, the bypass having an axial length;
- a stopper being sealably engaged in the syringe body and disposed between the bypass and the plunger end prior to mixing of the substances such that the substances are stored separately from each other prior to mixing, the stopper having an axial thickness less than the axial length of the bypass to permit one of the substances to flow around the stopper at the bypass to be mixed with the other substance, wherein the stopper comprises a cylindrical surface having annular and bridging ribs located thereon and sealingly engaging the syringe body, the annular ribs having a space therebetween and the bridging ribs extending between the annular ribs and subdividing the space between the annular ribs; and
- a plunger sealably engaged in the plunger end of the syringe body for driving the substances out of the needle end for injection, the plunger comprising annular and bridging ribs and a cylindrical surface, each of the ribs lying on the cylindrical surface and sealingly engaging the syringe body, and the bridging ribs extending between the annular ribs whereby an area between the annular ribs is subdivided to prevent substance flow around the plunger between the annular ribs at the bypass.
